[1/4] Ford Motor Company Chief Executive Bill Ford announces Ford will partner with Chinese-based, Amperex Technology, to build an all-electric vehicle battery plant in Marshall, Michigan, during a press conference in Romulus, Michigan U.S., February 13, 2023. REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 25 (Reuters) - Ford Motor (F.N) said Monday it has paused work on a $3.5 billion battery plant in Michigan, citing concerns about its ability to competitively operate the plant. The announcement comes as Ford has repeatedly upped its offer to the United Auto Workers union in contract talks. Republicans in Congress have been probing Ford's battery plant plan in Marshall, Michigan, using technology from CATL (300750.SZ), the world's largest battery maker. Ford has been awaiting guidance to determine if batteries operated by the Marshall plant would run afoul of the requirements.

That means most current executives, who came up in the era of easy money, are unfamiliar with the complexities of running a bank under today’s conditions. Some CEOs are deciding that they need to make drastic, expensive and often unpopular institutional changes to help them keep up. Banks currently have strong managers, but not a lot of strong leaders, said David Schiff, senior partner at West Monroe. Prior to the current interest rate hikes, banks had been operating with low-interest, stable rates for nearly two decades, he said. According to an update posted on the union site: “Unifor is extending negotiations with Ford Motor Company for a 24-hour period. By contrast, Unifor announced if it goes on strike, it will strike all the Ford facilities where it represents members. The union had granted them contract extensions while it focused its negotiations on reaching the best possible deal with Ford. It has not had a strike in its Canadian operations since 1990 and has not had a US strike since 1978. United Auto Workers (UAW) members on a picket line outside the Stellantis NV Toledo Assembly Complex in Toldeo, Ohio, US, on Monday, Sept. 18, 2023. Thousands of United Auto Workers members are striking against three major Detroit automakers — Ford, GM and Stellantis — at plants across the U.S. Autoworkers at Ford Motor Company were among the first to adopt a five-day, 40-hour workweek in 1926 at a time when people regularly topped 100 hours per week. By 1938, the Fair Labor Standards Act cut the workweek to 44 hours, then down to 40 hours two years later. "I think it will move the public toward thinking the four-day workweek is the appropriate workweek," Creighton says.

Here is a (highly) abbreviated rundown of how US society settled (so far anyway) on an eight-hour workday. The strike failed … but four years later US Steel reduced its workday from twelve to eight hours.”Pioneering employers — and a six-hour workday — make wavesIn 1926, the Ford Motor Company, under the leadership of Henry Ford, famously instituted an eight-hour-a-day, five-day workweek. Kellogg decided in 1930 to institute six-hour shifts in place of eight-hour shifts, with some reduction in workers’ pay. Kellogg’s move attracted national attention, and soon there was a push to federally legislate a six-hour workday. Hunnicutt interviewed several Kellogg workers about why they returned to a longer workday.

Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) increased slightly to $3.79 billion, well ahead of analysts' predictions for EBIT of $3.16 billion. With Thursday's results, management shows it is playing to win and that the fourth quarter was an outlier. Strong profitability and cash flow generation overall in the second quarter provided the much-needed offset. Quarterly commentary Ford Blue, which represents Ford's gas-powered and hybrid vehicles, delivered a strong quarter and was again profitable in every region in which it operates. By segment, Ford expects Ford Blue to deliver full year EBIT of "about $8 billion," up from about $7 billion, and Ford Pro's EBIT to be "approaching $8 billion," up from $6 billion.

Ford CEO Jim Farley announces at a press conference that Ford Motor Company will be partnering with the worlds largest battery company, a China-based company called Contemporary Amperex Technology, to create an electric-vehicle battery plant in Marshall, Michigan, on February 13, 2023 in Romulus, Michigan. DETROIT – U.S. lawmakers are seeking to review a licensing deal between Ford Motor and China-based CATL that would allow the automaker to produce battery cells developed by the global supplier at a planned $3.5 billion plant in Michigan. The new batteries are expected to offer different benefits at a lower cost, assisting Ford in increasing EV production and profit margins. Several hundred of the proposed 2,500 jobs managed by Ford will be staffed by CATL employees from China until the licensing agreement expires in 2038, according to the letter. "Indeed, although the executives of the proposed project will be US-based Ford employees, it appears that the project will rely on CATL employees from the PRC to maintain operations in the long term," the lawmakers wrote.

Over half of all new cars sold in the U.S. by 2030 are expected to be electric vehicles. That could put a major strain on our nation's electric grid, an aging system built for a world that runs on fossil fuels. Major grid infrastructure needsCharging electric vehicles is quite electricity intensive. Larger electric vehicles such as the Ford F-150 Lightning would generally use more electricity than a central AC unit in a large home. The utility is tied to a four-year funding cycle for grid infrastructure upgrades, and its last funding request was in 2021.

Using this insight, the researchers are able to successfully predict an individual's long-term success with just a small amount of information about that person's initial attempts. Indeed, in another recent study, Wang himself found that an early career setback often set up scientists for later success. In all three datasets, an individual's second-to-last attempt did tend have a higher probability of success than their very first effort. Rather, there's a singular learning threshold that separates eventual successes from the rest. "Thomas Edison said, 'people give up because they don't know how close they are to success,'" Wang explains.

As the real estate market in Melbourne, Australia, sizzled and home prices surged in 2017, Chris Calleja and Joy Suemag were scrambling to find a larger house for their young family. “Property was hot, so you had to be brave and go in and bid at auction,” said Mr. Calleja, 47, who works in finance at the Ford Motor Company. “You’re going to all these places and losing, losing, losing.”So when he and Ms. Suemag, also 47 and a marketing and sales professional at Ford, found a 1950s house in the Melbourne suburb of Alphington, which they liked for its proximity to work, school, stores and restaurants, they didn’t hesitate — although it was far from perfect.
Killing off projects had become something of a tradition at Kittyhawk, the secretive flying-car startup launched by the Google cofounder Larry Page. Larry Page has used his Google money to found a series of flying car companies with one common goal: "to free the world of traffic." "When Bloomberg did their original exposé, that's when urban air mobility became a thing," a former Kittyhawk employee recalled. Everyone thought: If Larry Page is in this space, there must be something here." Interpreting "Larry-isms" or "learning to speak Larry" were essential skills for any Kittyhawk employee who wanted to retain their sanity.
The new tax credit and the guidance are complex, and more information will be coming out in the coming weeks and months. The clearest impact on consumers will be the reduced number of vehicles eligible for credits starting April 18. Under the new rule, consumers can get up to $7,500 in tax credits on eligible cars. What is in the new EV tax credit rule and why is it complicated? New guidance from the Biden administration suggests fewer EVs will be eligible for tax credits starting April 18.

REUTERS/Rebecca CookMarch 30 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) has raised the base price of its popular F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck again, the automaker's website showed on Thursday, the latest in a series of price hikes aimed at offsetting high costs. The base variant of Ford's electric F-150 truck now starts at $59,974, excluding shipping and taxes, up nearly 50% from its starting price when launched last year. The Detroit automaker resumed production of the F-150 Lightning earlier this month after recalling 18 electric trucks due to a battery-cell manufacturing defect. A week earlier, Ford said its electric-vehicle business unit was expected to lose $3 billion this year, but remained on track to achieve a pretax margin of 8% by late 2026.

DETROIT – Ford Motor is recalling 18 electric F-150 Lightning pickups that the company has identified as potentially having a battery cell defect that caused a truck to catch fire last month. A Ford spokeswoman declined to disclose how many trucks Ford has in holding that may have the issue. Ford said it is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to the battery issue or recall. The F-150 Lightning is being closely watched by investors, as it's the first mainstream electric pickup truck on the market and a major launch for Ford. Ford initially opened customer reservations for the F-150 Lightning when it was revealed in May 2021.
Postal Service (USPS) said Tuesday it plans to buy 9,250 Ford (F.N) E-Transit battery electric vehicles starting later this year and will also purchase an equal number of gasoline-powered models from Chrysler-parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). Congress in August gave USPS $3 billion as part of a $430 billion climate bill to buy electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. USPS said it will also buy 9,250 2023 and 2024 model year Ram ProMaster vans from Chrysler-parent Stellantis "to fill the urgent need for vehicles." They are part of the 21,000 vehicles included in USPS December vehicle plan. Democratic Senator Gary Peters praised USPS for using funding to "quickly adopt more cost effective and energy efficient electric vehicles."
