CNN —The Edmonton Oilers aren’t done with their quest to end Canada’s decades-long Stanley Cup drought when they face off against the Florida Panthers in Game 6 on Friday. The Oilers defeated the Panthers 5-3 Tuesday at Amerant Bank Arena, forcing the Stanley Cup Final back to Canada. The Oilers were 0-3 down in the best-of-seven series series, but arguably have the momentum after successive wins as the scene shifts back to Edmonton. If the Oilers secure a win at home on Friday, they would take the series to a winner-takes-all Game 7 in Sunrise, Florida. If they manage to come back and win the series, the Oilers will finally end a three-decade Stanley Cup drought for Canadian teams – the Montreal Canadiens were the last to lift the Cup back in 1993.

With stocks set to close out a strong first half of 2024, investors have just one more key inflation hurdle to clear in the week ahead: May's personal expenditure report. Next week's personal consumption expenditure data, the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge, could show whether that overall picture is intact. May's consumer price index, for example, showed no increase from the prior month. Last month's producer price index , a measure of wholesale prices, unexpectedly dropped from the previous reading. Ledgers of the failed fintech middleman Synapse show that nearly all the deposits held for customers of the banking app Yotta went missing weeks ago, according to one of the lenders involved. A network of eight banks held $109 million in deposits for Yotta customers as of April 11, Evolve Bank & Trust said in a bankruptcy court letter filed late Thursday. About one month later, the ledger showed just $1.4 million in Yotta funds held at one of the banks, Evolve said. Yotta CEO and co-founder Adam Moelis said in response to this article that Synapse has said in court filings that Evolve held nearly all Yotta customers deposits. "According to the Synapse trial balance report provided on May 17, there are $112 million of customer funds held at Evolve," Moelis said.

The latest batch of US sanctions against Russia will promote further use of the yuan, a think tank said. It argued that as ruble volatility increases, the Chinese currency will offer stability. While sanctions also threaten Chinese entities, they won't be enough to disrupt yuan trading, it said. AdvertisementFresh sanctions on Russia are too late to be a game-changer, but they will help cement the role of China's yuan in place of Western currencies, a think tank said. Banking regulators on Friday disclosed that they found weaknesses in the resolution plans of four of the eight largest American lenders. The Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation said that the so-called living wills — plans for unwinding huge institutions in the event of distress or failure — of Citigroup , JPMorgan Chase , Goldman Sachs and Bank of America filed in 2023 were inadequate. Regulators found fault with the way each of the banks planned to unwind their massive derivatives portfolios. The living wills are a key regulatory exercise mandated in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis. "We are fully committed to addressing the issues identified by our regulators," New York-based Citigroup said in a statement.

An influential member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition told settlers in the Israeli-occupied West Bank that the government is engaged in a stealthy effort to irreversibly change the way the territory is governed, to cement Israel’s control over it without being accused of formally annexing it. In a taped recording of the speech, the official, Bezalel Smotrich, can be heard suggesting at a private event earlier this month that the goal was to prevent the West Bank from becoming part of a Palestinian state. “I’m telling you, it’s mega-dramatic,” Mr. Smotrich told the settlers. “Such changes change a system’s DNA.”While Mr. Smotrich’s opposition to ceding control over the West Bank is no secret, the Israeli government’s official position is that the West Bank’s status remains open to negotiations between Israeli and Palestinian leaders. Israel’s Supreme Court has ruled that Israel’s rule over the territory amounts to a temporary military occupation overseen by army generals, not a permanent civilian annexation administered by Israeli civil servants.

Read previewThe Federal Reserve's reluctance to lower interest rates in the near term is a risky gamble that could drive the US towards a recession, Claudia Sahm told CNBC. "But it's a real risk, and I do not understand why the Fed is pushing that risk. At current readings, that likely means just one rate cut in 2024, the Fed said. For this reason, Sahm told CNBC that the Fed should start a gradual cutting cycle now, and take the economy off a path that could require more severe action if not addressed. Markets, meanwhile, remain convinced that the Fed will follow with more than just one cut.

Bitcoin's recent weakness could be signaling an upcoming correction in stocks, according to Stifel's chief equity analyst Barry Bannister. On Thursday, the S & P 500 briefly touched 5,500 for the first time after notching its most recent record close earlier in the week. "Weakening bitcoin … signals an imminent S & P 500 summer correction and consolidation phase," he said. "With the S & P 500 now at the very high end (2 sigma) of bitcoin post-peak cycle overlays since 2011, we have yet another strong signal that an imminent S & P 500 correction is possible." "Past bubbles since the 19th century indicate the S & P 500 could well rise to ~6,000 at year-end 2024 and then round trip to near where 2024 began five quarters later, by ~1Q26 (S & P 500 ~4,800)."

Working oil pumpjacks dot the landscape on oilfields on the outskirts of Taft, Kern County, California on Sept. 21, 2023. Crude oil futures slid in early trade on Friday on the prospect of higher-for-longer interest rates in Asia and the United States, while falling U.S. oil inventories kept prices from moving lower. Japan's core consumer prices last month gained 2.5% from a year earlier, data showed on Friday, growing from the previous month and keeping the country's central bank on track to raise interest rates higher in the coming months. U.S. data released on Thursday showed that the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell in the week ended June 14, with broader strength in the jobs market persisting. Higher interest rates typically weigh on economies and, in turn, on oil demand.

General view of the Bank Of England building in London. LONDON — The Bank of England on Thursday opted to keep interest rates steady at its June meeting, confirming market expectations even after U.K. inflation hit its 2% target. It keeps the central bank's key rate at a 16-year high of 5.25%, where it has been held since August 2023. Seven members of the Monetary Policy Committee voted to hold, while two favored to cut, the same as during the bank's May meeting. However, economists say the U.K.'s continued high rates of services and core inflation suggest the potential for ongoing upward pressure.

Short bets against funds that track major US indexes have declined to record lows, JPMorgan said. As the S&P 500 and Nasdaq have hit a streak of record highs this year, short interest in funds that track the indexes has dropped, the bank said. AdvertisementFirst, short bets are expensive to maintain when a stock or fund is climbing, a risk that's especially relevant in today's bull run. Second, regulators have added restraints to short selling, by mandating transparency and adding costs to short sellers that target equities, JPMorgan said. According to JPMorgan, short positions are also disappearing from individual stocks, with a clear decline in the top seven leading equities.

The best software stocks to buy in today's environmentAccording to UBS, the current software industry offers investment opportunities for cybersecurity and cloud infrastructure stocks. Cybersecurity is a promising growth area, with potential for rapidly increasing demand, UBS said. Demand for cloud infrastructure — the combination of hardware and software needed for cloud computing — is also increasing. The big storyEmerging markets have been on tenterhooks for the better part of this year as the Federal Reserve has been dangling the prospect of an interest rate cut. Historically, as U.S. interest rates fall, the allure of the mighty dollar fades to the benefit of other currencies. Indeed, unlike most developed economies, India's interest rate regime in 2024 isn't any different from that of 2018. There lies the disconnect between the economy, the stock market, and a single stock.
