With the thunderbolt goal, Güler became the first teenager to score at a European Championship since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2004, guiding Turkey to its first ever opening-game victory at the tournament across the nation’s six appearances. “I don’t care about personal achievements,” Güler said after his performance against Georgia. Güler scores his long-range goal against Georgia. Alex Livesey/Getty ImagesIt was, though, a relatively quiet night for the 39-year-old, who was unable to add to his record haul of 14 European Championship goals. “Of course, I know his quality,” Portugal forward Diogo Jota told reporters on Friday when asked about Güler’s performance against Georgia.

CNN —Czech Republic denied Georgia its first ever victory at a major international tournament, as the two teams drew 1-1 in its Group F encounter on Saturday. Georges Mikautadze scored the opening goal of the game at Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, slotting home a penalty on the stroke of half time. The spot kick was awarded for a handball on Czech Republic’s Robin Hranáč, after the video assistant referee (VAR) recommended on-field referee Daniel Siebert consult the pitch-side screen. Czech Republic equalized on the hour mark, though, after Patrik Schick prodded home at the back post to level the scores. This is a developing story and will be updated.

Jack Taylor | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesLONDON — European stocks are heading for a cautiously higher open Friday as investors monitor a slew of central bank decisions and data releases. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index is on course for a weekly gain of more than 1.5%, its best performance since early May. Attention this week turned to central bank action, as the Swiss National Bank announced it would cut interest rates by 0.25 percentage points to 1.25%. The SNB became the first major central bank to cut rates during this cycle back in March. The Bank of England meanwhile kept interest rates unchanged at a 16-year high of 5.25%.

Ukraine suffered a chastening defeat in its opening group game on Monday, producing a dour display in a 3-0 defeat against Romania. But Ukraine looked rejuvenated after the break and came out for the second half with a new sense of belief. “It’s very good emotions for our people of Ukraine who are really missing these emotions,” Rebrov said in his post-match interview on Friday. In this kind of tournament, you can win, you can lose, but it’s very important how you do it. “We deserve this win and I think today we really played with spirit.”

Even so, Japan's top currency diplomat Masato Kanda stressed on Friday that Tokyo stands ready to take further "resolute" action against "speculative, excessive volatility". The dollar index was little changed at 105.66, on course for a slight weekly gain that would extend its winning streak to three weeks. Sterling was flat at $1.2657, sticking close to the $1.2655 low from Thursday, a level last seen on May 17. The BoE kept rates on hold, but some policy makers said the decision not to cut was "finely balanced". The European Central Bank kicked off its rate cutting cycle earlier this month.

Saudi Arabia has not renewed a deal that ensures the use of US dollars in the oil trade. The end of this "petrodollar" agreement will dent dollar dominance, the Atlantic Council wrote. This month, Saudi Arabia did not renew a 1974 accord that mandates the exclusive use of greenbacks when selling its crude oil. What's more, US dependence on Saudi oil has slid considerably, given a historic explosion in US domestic production. "China has become Saudi Arabia's largest oil customer, accounting for more than 20% of the kingdom's oil exports.

It’s not just Taylor Swift fans keeping a close eye on her Eras Tour dates. One of Europe’s most prominent economists is acutely aware that the singer is spending the summer jetting between Europe’s stadiums. Philip Lane, the chief economist at the European Central Bank, had the pop star on his mind when he spoke at an event on Monday. “You managed to say all that without saying Taylor Swift.”Ms. Swift is touring Europe this summer, bringing in her wake hundreds of thousands of Swifties spending on airfare, hotels, restaurants and friendship bracelets.

Meetings between Spain and Italy rarely disappoint and this one was no exception — even if it was an own goal that decided the contest. Victory sees Spain progress to the knockout stage as group winners, while for Italy it’s all to play for against Croatia on Monday. The one-way traffic continued after half-time, and Spain got to 11 efforts at goal without finding the net. Some will focus on Donnarumma pushing Morata’s header into a helpless Calafiori’s path for Spain’s goal. As the team in front of him were run ragged by Williams and Yamal, the 25-year-old Donnarumma kept things dignified.

A view of the headquarters of the Swiss National Bank (SNB), before a press conference in Zurich, Switzerland, March 21, 2024. The Swiss National Bank on Thursday trimmed its key interest rate by 25 basis points to 1.25%, continuing cuts at a time when sentiment over monetary policy easing remains mixed among major economies. The figures assumes a SNB interest rate of 1.25% over the prediction period. Switzerland already has the second-lowest interest rate of the Group of Ten democracies by a wide margin, following Japan. It became the first major economy to cut interest rates back in late March and was earlier this month followed by the European Central Bank, and questions are now mounting over whether it will proceed with a third rate cut this year.

General view of the Bank Of England building in London. LONDON — The Bank of England on Thursday opted to keep interest rates steady at its June meeting, confirming market expectations even after U.K. inflation hit its 2% target. It keeps the central bank's key rate at a 16-year high of 5.25%, where it has been held since August 2023. Seven members of the Monetary Policy Committee voted to hold, while two favored to cut, the same as during the bank's May meeting. However, economists say the U.K.'s continued high rates of services and core inflation suggest the potential for ongoing upward pressure.

The big storyEmerging markets have been on tenterhooks for the better part of this year as the Federal Reserve has been dangling the prospect of an interest rate cut. Historically, as U.S. interest rates fall, the allure of the mighty dollar fades to the benefit of other currencies. Indeed, unlike most developed economies, India's interest rate regime in 2024 isn't any different from that of 2018. There lies the disconnect between the economy, the stock market, and a single stock. Paris CNN —French soccer superstar Kylian Mbappé made a dramatic foray into the country’s election campaign this week, but don’t expect the striker to have an influence on the outcome. The far-right National Rally party of anti-immigration leader Marine Le Pen is leading in the polls, and most pundits suspect her populist movement has never come this close to power. Leaders of the French far-right National Rally, Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella, attend a rally ahead of the European Parliament elections where the party had huge success earlier this month. In 2006, Marine Le Pen’s father, far-right patriarch Jean-Marie Le Pen, suggested there were too many “players of color” on the national side. While millions will cheer them on at the Euros, they serve as a visible reminder of the country’s changing demographics — an issue which animates voters for the National Rally like no other.

CNN —Soccer superstar Kylian Mbappé was pictured wearing a French-inspired tricolore mask during a training session on Thursday, after the France captain broke his nose during the team’s opening Euro 2024 win against Austria three days ago. There had been fears the injury might rule Mbappé out of his nation’s second Group D match of Euro 2024 against the Netherlands on Friday, but France manager Didier Deschamps told reporters Thursday that the star should be available. The French Football Federation (FFF) said Mbappé was then taken to a local hospital, where X-rays confirmed the break. Luka Jović’s header in the 95th minute of the match sparked frenzied scenes inside Munich’s Allianz Arena, a goal which also denied Slovenia its first ever win at a European Championships. That suggests the Bank of England won’t follow the European Central Bank in cutting interest rates when it meets Thursday. A rate cut in August, when UK policymakers meet next, is now also less likely. Other economists, including analysts at Nomura, thought an August rate cut was still possible if pay rises and the price of services cooled further. “For an August rate cut, we will need other economic news to play ball,” the analysts wrote in a note. UK inflation peaked at 11.1% in October 2022, driven to a 41-year high by surging food and energy costs.

CNN —Cristiano Ronaldo made history by becoming the first player to feature in six European Championships as Portugal came from behind to beat Czech Republic 2-1 in Leipzig at Euro 2024 on Tuesday. The 39-year-old made his tournament debut back in 2004, when host Portugal was beaten by Greece in the final. Despite Portugal dominating proceedings, it was Czech Republic which scored first, courtesy of Lukáš Provod’s fantastic long-range effort in the 62nd minute. Czech Republic goalkeeper Jindřich Staněk failed to deal with a simple cross and parried it against his own defender, with the ball bouncing off Robin Hranáč into the goal. At 41 and 113 days, defender Pepe became the oldest player to feature at a European Championships.
