Bitcoin's blockchain is slowly becoming more than just a buy-and-hold platform. Ethereum underwent a similar trend, leading to its massive rally in 2021, Bitget CEO Gracy Chen told Business Insider. Advertisement"The Ordinals protocol enabled the growth of memecoins on the bitcoin blockchain, leading to a surge in liquidity within the BTC ecosystem in record time. That's based on the Total Value Locked, or the amount of assets staked on the bitcoin protocol. However, even a twofold weaker surge could still result in a fivefold increase in the leading cryptocurrency's value," Chen wrote in a note.

"This is really one of the most amazing things that I've seen in my career with respect to securities regulation," van Eck told CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week. VanEck was the first to apply to the SEC for permission to list its proposed Ethereum ETF. So the first reaction was to get the ETF, Ethereum ETF approval green lighted," he said. To van Eck, the buzz around Ethereum this May means clearer regulation on the horizon and an increased investor interest in crypto. Ether spiked on the SEC's approval of applications to list Ethereum ETFs on May 23, but is virtually flat since then.

Dollar firm ahead of global inflation data
  + stars: | 2024-05-27 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
The dollar made a steady start to the week, as investors were focused on U.S., European and Japanese inflation data to guide the global interest rate outlook. The euro , which gained 0.9% on the dollar last week, was in the middle of a range it has held for more than a year at $1.0846. German inflation on Wednesday and euro zone readings on Friday will be watched for confirmation of a European rate cut that traders have priced for next week. The dollar had fallen back after data showed a slowdown in consumer price rises in April and disappointing retail sales, before strengthening last week thanks to better-than-expected PMI survey data. China's yuan finished last week weaker than 7.24 per dollar, its lowest level since early May.

Coinbase is poised to benefit from U.S. spot ether exchange-traded funds, if they are approved, according to JMP Securities. The turnaround sent ether soaring more than 20% to start the week. Cryptocurrencies rose Tuesday amid a late surge in optimism around the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's decisions on spot ether exchange-traded funds applications, the first of which is due this week. Ether led the rally, rising 9% to $3,680.98, according to Coin Metrics. Investors are reconsidering the probability that the SEC greenlights spot ether ETF applications amid reports that the SEC has requested document updates from potential ETF issuers and exchanges. Final decisions on applications by VanEck and Ark Invest are due this Thursday and Friday, respectively. Ethereum has jumped over the past 24 hours as odds of an imminent ETF approval have soared. The problem with Ether right now for investors
  + stars: | 2024-05-11 | by ( Tanaya Macheel | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
While the supply of bitcoin is slowing after the halving , the supply of ether is growing at its fastest rate since 2022, according to CryptoQuant – crushing some investor's dreams of ether as an asset that would grow increasingly scarce. The median transaction fee is about 4x lower now that it was before Dencun for the same level of network activity. Some investors had hoped ether could compete with bitcoin, whose rate of supply growth slows every four years after the halving. For many, that idea was a side effect of the primary thesis on Ethereum, which sees it as a growing, scalable transaction network on which to build applications. Network activity would have to increase 3 to 4x to reverse the growing supply trend, if this relationship holds, he said.

Bitcoin is set for more price gains later this year, even after a recent retreat in prices, according to Standard Chartered's top crypto analyst. Geoffrey Kendrick, head of foreign exchange research, West, and digital assets research at Standard Chartered, said in a research note this week that he sees bitcoin rising to $150,000 per coin, and ether hitting $8,000 by the end of 2024 — doubling down on a bullish prediction from the bank earlier this year. Bitcoin temporarily sank below $60,000 last week as traders reacted to news of an escalating military conflict between Iran and Israel. Also, large long liquidations over the past couple of weeks mean that market positioning is a lot cleaner," Kendrick said. "As a result, with Middle East tensions easing I think it is time to re-engage in medium-term longs."

Singapore's economic losses due to heat stress could nearly double to $1.64 billion in 2035 from pre-pandemic 2018 due to a decline in labor productivity, a recent study by the National University of Singapore showed. Back in 2018, heat strain caused an 11.3% fall in average productivity across Singapore's four big economic sectors — services, construction, manufacturing and agriculture. Fall in productivity is expected to rise to 14% in 2035, leading to an economic loss of S$2.22 billion ($1.64 billion), after adjusting for inflation, the NUS Project HeatSafe report said. The loss will be significantly higher for workers exposed to adverse environmental conditions — those working working under the sun, or being exposed to other sources of heat such as machineries. Last July, United Nations' Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned that the world has moved away from global warming to "an era of global boiling."

Tramèr and a team of AI researchers then posed the question in a paper published in February on arXiv, a research paper platform hosted by Cornell University: Could someone deliberately "poison" the data an AI model is trained on? The team then monitored how often researchers downloaded from the datasets that contained domains Tramèr and his colleagues owned. as the site is a "very prime component of the training sets" for language models, Tramèr said. Like tech stocks, bitcoin sometimes benefits from low interest rates and improved market liquidity, which can lead to better sentiment and greater investment in growth assets. Stock Chart Icon Stock chart icon Bitcoin turns higher after two days of losses"There has been an inverse relationship between rates and bitcoin price," said Oppenheimer executive director Owen Lau. "When the Fed increased interest rates in 2022, it took out liquidity from the market, which impacted bitcoin and tech stocks. When the Fed cuts rates, it provides liquidity to the market, which should benefit risky assets such as bitcoin. The Ethereum network successfully completed its "Dencun" upgrade on Wednesday, which is meant to help it become faster and cheaper to use. The price of ether has been trading lower since then, which was expected based on the cryptocurrency's behavior following previous tech upgrades. "High activity on the Ethereum network has caused high transaction fees and, consequently, more fees burnt," Julio Moreno, CryptoQuant's head of research, said in a note Wednesday. High transaction activity causes network fees to spike, more fees being burnt and total supply to decrease." They're hoping that the combination of increased activity and the decrease in the supply of ether over time will push the token's price higher.

Relative to bitcoin , the initial price action following the upgrade is even weaker historically, with ether underperforming 80% of the time in the first 20 days, Saunders added. Saunders warned, however, that the trading environment for crypto is different today than it was during previous Ethereum network upgrades. The scalability problem Dencun follows the "Shapella" upgrade from almost a year ago, which allowed investors to withdraw their staked ether from the network for the first time. This upgrade is focused on the longer-term goal of enhancing Ethereum's ability to handle more activity and transactions as the network grows. CNN —After using artificial intelligence to uncover the first word to be read from an unopened Herculaneum scroll, a team of researchers has revealed several nearly complete passages from the ancient text, giving insight into philosophy from almost 2,000 years ago. The Herculaneum scrolls are hundreds of papyri that survived the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. By using computer technology and advanced artificial intelligence, researchers can now analyze the Herculaneum scrolls without unrolling and risking damage to the extremely fragile documents. The first word to be decoded, the Greek word for purple, was detected in October 2023 and can be found within the newly interpreted passages. The charred documents, now referred to as the Herculaneum scrolls, were recovered from a building believed to be the house of Julius Caesar’s father-in-law, according to the University of Kentucky.
