NEW YORK (AP) — One of the world’s largest and most influential publishers, Simon & Schuster, celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The list tells many stories, through the books selected, not selected, and the evolution of what has been highlighted. “A group of Simon & Schuster staffers took on the daunting challenge of selecting 100 titles from our history that are believed to best represent the breadth and depth of the company’s publishing program, across imprints,” the publisher announced Wednesday. “That book actually had an influence on the course of events.”Like many leading publishers, Simon & Schuster began as an independently owned company and vastly expanded after the 1960s. Along the way, Simon & Schuster acquired numerous other publishers, whose books are now part of the S&S catalog and its centennial list.

CNN —A group of 19 predominantly Democratic lawmakers is calling on Secretary of State Antony Blinken to provide answers about why he bypassed Congress last month to approve arms sales to Israel. The top US diplomat made two emergency determinations in December to immediately approve the transfer hundreds of millions of dollars in military equipment to Israel. In their letter, the lawmakers noted the rarity of administrations using emergency declarations to immediately approve arms sales without congressional approval. “Use of a national emergency waiver does not exempt the U.S. government from assessing whether arms sales are consistent with” those standards, they wrote. I would say that the process that the secretary followed and the process that we follow here at the State Department is the process that the law actually prescribed,” Miller said at a State Department briefing.

WASHINGTON — Social media researcher Joan Donovan says she knows the exact moment her career began to go off the rails. "I got called into the principal's office and was questioned about why I'm talking about Facebook," Donovan said. In a statement to CNBC, Harvard Kennedy School Director of Public Affairs James Smith disputed Donovan's account of her departure. "The narrative is full of inaccuracies and baseless insinuations, particularly the suggestion that Harvard Kennedy School allowed Facebook to dictate its approach to research." Smith told CNBC that Harvard University and the Kennedy School continue to carry out misinformation and social media research to this day.

Some two decades after leaving the White House, Rosalynn Carter reflected on the criticism she generated for expanding the role of a first lady. “The first lady role has changed,” she observed. Mrs. Carter pushed the boundaries that had constrained most of her predecessors. Nancy Reagan recalled in her memoir a “chill in her manner” when Mrs. Carter showed her around the White House following the 1980 election when Ronald Reagan defeated Mr. Carter. Dr. Biden “isn’t an activist first lady” in the way that Mrs. Carter was, said Mr. LaRosa, the former aide to the current first lady.

Former President Jimmy Carter will emerge from hospice care to join some of his successors and every living presidential spouse on Tuesday to honor Rosalynn Carter, his wife and partner of more than three-quarters of a century and the nation’s first lady from 1977 to 1981, the Carter Center said. President Biden, former President Bill Clinton and all five living first ladies will attend as well. Frail but alert and smiling, the two made their last public appearance together in September when they were driven around the Plains Peanut Festival. Born at her family’s house in Plains, the tiny town where she would live most of her life, Eleanor Rosalynn Smith as a young girl might have been surprised at the star-studded turnout expected to salute her at the end. Her father drove a school bus, owned an auto repair shop and ran a farm, while her mother sold milk from their one cow, worked in the school lunchroom and later joined the post office.

Following the pandemic, the state of mental health in America saw such a great decline that the U.S. Yet, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, who passed away on Sunday at her home in Plains, Georgia at the age of 96, advocated for mental health long before 2020. Early on, Carter recognized the disconnect between individuals with mental health conditions and people without them. She made sure to hold her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, who is now 99 years old, to the same standard. "Twenty-five years ago, we did not dream that people might someday be able actually to recover from mental illnesses," Rosalynn Carter said at a mental health symposium back in 2003.

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter were the longest-married presidential couple, having wed in 1946 when he was 21 and she was 18. During that time, Rosalynn Carter sought to support her husband by speaking in 112 cities in 34 states during a 44-day tour. In the White House, she became honorary chair of the President's Commission on Mental Health, key to passage of a 1980 act that helped fund local mental health centers.

She was 96. The Carter Center in Atlanta announced her death. On Friday, the center said she had entered hospice care at home. ATLANTA (AP) — Former first lady Rosalynn Carter, the closest adviser to Jimmy Carter during his one term as U.S. president and their four decades thereafter as global humanitarians, has died at the age of 96. Fiercely loyal and compassionate as well as politically astute, Rosalynn Carter prided herself on being an activist first lady, and no one doubted her behind-the-scenes influence. After Ronald Reagan won the 1980 election, Rosalynn Carter seemed more visibly devastated than her husband. “We developed a partnership when we were working in the farm supply business,” Rosalynn Carter recalled with pride in a 2021 interview with The Associated Press. He listens to her.”Ceremonies celebrating the life of Rosalynn Carter will take place after the Thanksgiving holiday in Atlanta and Sumter County, Georgia, the Carter Center announced Sunday evening.

“I was in all the states,” Rosalynn Carter told the AP. At The Carter Center, she launched a fellowship for journalists to pursue better coverage of mental health issues. Years later, Rosalynn and Jimmy would quietly support integration — and call for it more vocally at Plains Baptist Church. Ruth Carter later engineered a date between her brother and Rosalynn during one of his trips home from the U.S. But the void would not begin to close until the former president conceived The Carter Center.

In the summer of 1972, the townhouse at 313 West 102nd Street, where Eleanor Roosevelt’s father once lived, had lingered on the market for a year despite its historical lineage, when the developer Roland W. Betts agreed to pay the $150,000 asking price. At the time, the four-story structure, built in 1892, was divided into six apartments, and Mr. Betts and his wife, Lois, both former teachers, lived in one of them. They eventually converted the building back to a single-family residence after a yearlong gut renovation, and raised their two daughters there. Through the years, the house, situated in a historic district between Riverside Drive and West End Avenue, not only became a cherished home but a showcase for entertaining dignitaries. They included Mr. Betts’s Yale classmate and best friend, President George W. Bush, with whom he once shared ownership of the Texas Rangers baseball team through an investor group.

A Surprising Shift in Economics

A then-obscure think tank named the Roosevelt Institute released a report in 2015 that called for a new approach to economic policy. It was unabashedly progressive, befitting the history of the institute, which was created by trusts honoring Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. National news outlets covered the report while also noting how much of a break it represented with decades of economic policy by both the Democratic and Republican Parties. American workers have become more interested in unionizing, and labor unions in both the auto industry and Hollywood have recently won big victories. “It’s very surprising this all happened,” Felicia Wong, the longtime president of the Roosevelt Institute, told me.

watch nowLONDON — With big productions always needing big money, one theater expert explains how investment in the sector works and how London's West End is used as a testing ground for its New York counterpart. Not-for-profit vs. commercialIn London, there are two main theater models: Not-for-profit venues like the National Theatre, Shakespeare's Globe, and The Old Vic, and commercial theater like in the famous West End. Stakes higher in New YorkThe bar for financial success is much lower in London than on Broadway in New York. Budgets for shows in the West End can reach millions while on Broadway in New York, the stakes are even higher. Often producers will run productions in London first and if they are received well, transfer them to New York.

But by then she was well positioned to occupy the rarefied worlds of alternative film, fashion and music, insulated from snarky criticism and the crassness of commercial demands. I don’t see the presence of these rarefied worlds — either in her biography or as depicted on the screen — as a shortcoming. Arguably, Ms. Coppola is exceptional as an artist because nobody among her contemporaries succeeds in preserving that pristine air the way she does, especially when used to embody an explicitly feminine worldview. There may be a rebelliousness in this stillness, and a romance — of taking up things and pondering them in your heart. But on the most basic level, what Ms. Hirschberg described as a strength is a tendency to abstain, to not do something — a tendency shared by many of Ms. Coppola’s protagonists.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

In her 25 years of making films, Sofia Coppola has always found the poetry behind the headlines, the banality in the glamour, the soul in the superficial. “(Priscilla) wasn’t looking to make a movie out of the story,” Coppola told The Associated Press in a recent interview. They shot out of order: On some days, Spaeny was teenage Priscilla in the morning and adult, pregnant Priscilla after lunch. Though there are endless photographs and video footage of Elvis and Priscilla, those photographs have disappeared, Coppola said. Before the film's premiere in Venice, Coppola said she wasn’t making “Priscilla” for Elvis fans.

“Sleeping Beauty” (1959) - Shots from this Disney classic keep popping up in my X feed, as every now and again Film Twitter likes to declare it the most beautiful hand-drawn animation from the House of Mouse. The algorithm clearly has no regard for how triggering this is for me. But it was the silky, sinister voice work by Eleanor Audley that lived in my head rent free and gave me nightmares for years. When boyhood crush Angelina Jolie took on the role in the 2014 live action movie, that was a confusing time for me. — Tom Page Courtesy Everett Collection

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, the last two living Beatles, have “come together” to finish a song that the late John Lennon wrote and recorded in 1970 called “Now and Then.”For McCartney and Starr, hearing the “crystal clear” voice of Lennon on the completed track was a profound experience. Lennon wrote and recorded the song at his home in New York City in 1970. It was later worked on by McCartney, Starr and George Harrison – who died in 2001 – in the mid-90s, and finished by McCartney and Starr this year, over four decades later. The track – coined by McCartney as “the last Beatles song” – features the original vocals recorded by Lennon that were preserved using artificial intelligence. Backing vocals from Beatles songs “Here, There And Everywhere,” “Eleanor Rigby” and “Because” were mixed into the final cut.
