Brian Ach | Getty ImagesCanon , the Japanese firm best known for its printers and cameras, launched a critical tool on Friday it says can help manufacture the most advanced semiconductors around. The latest "nanoimprint lithography" system is Canon's challenge to Dutch firm ASML , which dominates the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machine space. ASML's tools are required to make the most advanced chips such as those in the latest Apple iPhones which are manufactured by Taiwan's TSMC . For context, the A17 Pro chip inside Apple's iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, is a 3nm semiconductor. Both TSMC and South Korea's Samsung, the two biggest advanced chip manufacturing companies, are aiming to make 2nm chips in 2025.

There is no Chinese company that can do what TSMC does. Along with Huawei, SMIC is on a U.S. trade blacklist called the Entity List. The 7nm process is seen as highly-advanced in the world of semiconductors, even though it is not the latest technology. While SMIC is able to create 7nm chips, it's unclear how efficient, profitable and sustainable that is on a bigger scale. While the yield of SMIC's 7nm process for Huawei chips is not known, it is "probably low," Kotasthane said.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 12 (Reuters) - Intel (INTC.O) said on Tuesday it has agreed to sell a stake of about 10% in the IMS Nanofabrication business to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (2330.TW). Intel will retain majority ownership of IMS, and the transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter. "The investment by TSMC we believe also demonstrates the excitement across the whole semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem for the significant opportunity ahead of IMS," Intel vice president of corporate development Matt Poirier said. Intel is building a contract manufacturing business called Intel Foundry Services that competes with TSMC. Intel sold a 20% stake in IMS earlier this year to Bain Capital at the same valuation.

UAW Local 5960 member Kinethia Black fills the brakes of a 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV during vehicle production on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at the General Motors Orion Assembly Plant in Orion Township, Michigan. DETROIT – General Motors on Thursday offered its largest four-year wage increase in decades as part of a new contract proposal to the United Auto Workers, as the automaker attempts to avoid another costly strike by its unionized workforce. The wage increase for most of GM's roughly 46,000 UAW-represented workers would be 10%, while newer employees would be eligible for up to a 56% increase in wages over the four years of the deal, the company announced Thursday after meeting with union leaders and negotiators. The proposed contract also includes two additional 3% lump sum payments resulting in a total increase of 16%; $5,500 ratification bonus; $6,000 one-time inflation-recognition payment; and $5,000 in inflation-protection bonuses over the life of the agreement (in-progression employees are eligible). The UAW did not immediately respond for comment.

The difficulty of this achievement also shows the resilience of the country’s chip technological ability," TechInsights analyst Dan Hutcheson said. EUV refers to extreme ultraviolet lithography and is used to make 7 nm or more advanced chips. LIMITED ACHIEVEMENTThe most advanced chip SMIC had previously been known for making was 14nm, as it was barred by Washington in late 2020 from obtaining an EUV machine from Dutch firm ASML (ASML.AS). But TechInsights last year said it believed SMIC had managed to produce 7 nm chips by tweaking simpler DUV machines it could still purchase freely from ASML. Jefferies analysts reckon Huawei is preparing to ship ten million units of the Mate 60 Pro, though it may struggle to support that quantity with China-made 7 nm chips.

REUTERS/Piroschka van de Wouw/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsAMSTERDAM, Sept 5 (Reuters) - ASML (ASML.AS) will ship the first pilot tool in its next product line this year as planned, the semiconductor equipment maker's CEO Peter Wennink said, despite some supplier hold-ups. Under pressure from the United States, the Dutch government does not grant ASML licences to export EUV tools to Chinese chipmakers. Like in a camera, the High NA, or high numerical aperture tool, will gather light from a wider angle for up to 70% better resolution, although the ASML tool uses a system of mirrors rather than a lens. Separately, Wennink confirmed that ASML will have more sales in dollar terms from its previous generation "DUV" machines than EUV machines in 2023. ASML is forecasting 30% sales growth this year due in part to strong demand from Chinese customers for the older machines.

Samsung's 11-year-old investment in ASML has been hugely lucrative. Over the past decade, ASML shares have delivered a whopping 25% annualised return to its shareholders. It's part of Samsung's ambitious $230 billion commitment to bolster South Korea's semiconductor and high-tech sectors over the next 20 years. Moreover, Samsung's cash is probably held in overseas affiliates and subsidiaries across different jurisdictions; its annual report lists hundreds of entities abroad. That should help ease Samsung’s vexing cash bind, but the company may still need to come up with some creative funding choices.

CNN —Thanks to a combination of new models, more production and new tax laws, electric vehicles are no longer just for the wealthy. Currently the “days supply” of electric vehicles – a measure of the number units on dealer lots relative to how quickly they sell – is now twice that of new vehicles overall. The biggest bargain among electric vehicles currently, whether you lease or buy, happens to be one that’s going away soon. "We have taken this step in the interest of our national security" said Dutch Trade Minister Liesje Schreinemacher, adding such equipment may have military applications. Schreinemacher said a "very limited" number of companies and product models would be affected, and China was not named. But the Chinese Embassy in the Netherlands described the move as an "abuse of export control measures" that violate trade rules. ASM International, which makes atomic layer deposition tools, said it did not expect a material change to its forecasts as a result of the Dutch rules, which also discuss that technology. US threat gives ASML new headache on China exports

BRUSSELS, June 30 (Reuters Breakingviews) - ASML (ASML.AS) now has to look to Washington, not its home government in The Hague, to determine which of its top-class chip-making machines it can still sell to Chinese companies. The Dutch government on Friday moved to restrict sales by the $294 billion semiconductor giant of EUV and certain types of its DUV lithography machines. That gives Biden reach over not only Dutch firms but also suppliers like Germany’s Trumpf and Zeiss, which make lasers and lenses respectively. ASML said Friday's Dutch announcement won’t have a material impact on its bottom line. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
