LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville has reached an agreement with College of Charleston coach Pat Kelsey to become the Cardinals’ next men’s basketball coach, a person with direct knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. Kenny Payne, a first-time head coach, was fired by Louisville on March 13 after going 12-52 the last two seasons at his alma mater. It marked the worst two-year stretch in the storied program's history and capped its third consecutive losing season after missing the NCAA Tournament in 2021. But unlike Payne, Kelsey brings experience and a record of coaching success at Charleston and Winthrop. Kelsey previously worked as a Wake Forest assistant and Xavier associate head coach.

A curly-haired young man shakes as he bends over the mound of smashed concrete that used to be his friend’s home. “Please God.”A father crawls over a mountain of gray concrete shards, his right ear pressed to the dust. “Said,” he cries, “didn’t I tell you to take care of your sister?”Another man on another rubble heap is looking for his wife and his children, Rahaf, 6, and Aboud, 4. “Rahaf,” he cries, leaning forward to scan the twisted pile of gray before him. “What has she done to deserve this?”Gaza has become a 140-square-mile graveyard, each destroyed building another jagged tomb for those still buried within.

Many Republicans plan to skip the House GOP retreat as they grumble about both the location and the idea of spending time with one another, with tensions still running high inside the party in the wake of their unprecedented speakership drama. Fewer than 100 Republicans have RSVP’d to attend the retreat, which is less than half of the entire conference, according to a GOP source familiar with the attendance sheet. GOP Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, for example, is scheduled to appear on “Real Time with Bill Maher” later this week. In a remarkable split screen, firebrand GOP Rep. Upholding that proud tradition, President Joe Biden is headed to the border on Thursday — and so is former President Donald Trump. I’m a lifelong resident of Arizona, and border-state voters have heard a lot of talk, but haven’t seen much action. The president’s only other visit to the border was a year ago, briefly stopping in El Paso before racing back home. This would at least mitigate Biden’s polling drop while also giving border states and blue cities a respite from the migrant influx. When we saw Everlane's new collection, the messages in our style team's Slack group started flying. As always with Everlane, the thing that took us aback was how brilliantly they executed a collection that turns trendy pieces into ultra-practical staples. But this drop absolutely nailed it by releasing our favorite pieces in organic colors like sage green, sandy brown, and oyster white. Ashley Phillips, former style editor, reviewed Everlane's ReKnit mules and wrote: "This is my first pair of Everlane shoes with the brand's ReKnit material, and I love it! If you feel like you’re drowning in neologisms lately, you’re not delulu. The uptick in coinages has been noted by culture writers and TikTok users alike. There’s even a meme for slang overload, though it has been around since 2020. Girl dinner, an informal phrase credited to the TikTok user Olivia Maher that describes a light, charcuterie board-like meal, was inducted as an entry on Dictionary.com this month. It joins other newly inducted informal nouns and slang terms — including bussin’, the ick and pretty privilege — whose rise has been driven at least in part by social media.

Judges who are committed to originalism, which seeks to interpret the Constitution based on what it meant when it was adopted, often say they are guided by “text, history and tradition.” The phrase rolls nicely off the tongue. But one of those things is not like the others, a conservative federal appeals court judge said this month in a lively talk at Harvard Law School that critiqued recent trends at the Supreme Court. And maybe it is indeed all those things. But let’s be clear: It’s not originalism.”The Supreme Court’s blockbuster 2022 decisions eliminating the right to abortion and expanding gun rights both drew on traditions that emerged after the constitutional provisions in question were ratified. The rulings did not turn on their discussion of tradition, but nor were they minor asides.

Dry Weather Hampers Mass Christmas Island Crab Migration
  + stars: | 2024-02-19 | by ( Feb. | At A.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +1 min
By Cordelia HsuSYDNEY (Reuters) - Unusually dry weather has delayed the annual migration of millions of Christmas Island red crabs from the island's interior to the sea where they mate. There are over 100 million red crabs on Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean, much of which is designated as a national park. Authorities say "exceptionally dry" conditions have put a dampener on this season's migration, where the mass of red crabs usually blocks off traffic in a normal year. This year is the first time the crabs have migrated as late as February since Parks Australia started tracking migration in the 1980s, he added. The migration sees the crabs journey from the interior of the island to the ocean, where they mate.

Beyoncé approves of cowboycore

Completing her look were a pair of aviator-style shades, an embellished head scarf and a stone-colored cowboy hat. In fact, Beyoncé hasn’t been without a cowboy hat in nearly two weeks. On TikTok #cowboycore has 11.4 million views and counting, where users video themselves styling a wide-brimmed rancher cap or, as in one video, pairing vintage leather chaps with a belted trench coat. Cowboy boots, for one, were plucked from their country context and thrust onto the urban streets of metropolitan cities years ago. The embroidered leather boots have been a mainstay of the style set ever since, transcending over the years from a subversive statement piece to something more timeless.

When Israel established a checkpoint near the Mousas' land a decade ago, the family converted their ancestral farm into a parking lot for Palestinian workers entering Israel. But the lot has been empty since Oct. 7, when Hamas militants attacked Israel from the Gaza Strip, and Israel, fearing more attacks, barred Palestinian workers from the West Bank from entering Israel. Before October, over 10,000 Palestinian workers crossed the checkpoint there daily, heading to Israeli construction sites and farms. An estimated 200,000 Palestinians worked in Israel and Israeli settlements before the war, according to the Israeli workers' hotline Kav LaOved. The Alassane Ouattara stadium rises like a piece of sculpture from the dusty brown earth north of Ivory Coast’s largest city, its undulating roof and white columns towering over the empty landscape like a spaceship that has dropped onto a uninhabited planet. On Sunday, the three-and-a-half-year-old stadium will host its signature moment, when the national soccer teams of Ivory Coast and Nigeria compete in the final of Africa’s biggest sporting event, in front of tens of thousands of fans chanting and cheering in a stadium financed and built by China. While that is nothing new for the tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations, the arena is just the latest example of the contradictions that emerge from Chinese projects built on Chinese terms, and on African soil. Stadiums have been a cornerstone of China’s diplomatic reach into Africa since the 1970s, but their number has increased since the early 2000s, part of a larger Chinese strategy to build infrastructure — from highways to railroads, ports to presidential palaces and even the headquarters of the African Union — in exchange for diplomatic clout or access to natural resources.
