Several large investment firms are writing off a recession in the US in 2024 as growth holds up and inflation steadily declines, but T. Rowe Price thinks that optimism may be misplaced. While T. Rowe Price doesn't have an official call on the economy, the brightest minds at the $1.4 trillion Baltimore-based firm urged investors to be cautious at a mid-November conference. However, T. Rowe Price is skeptical that the Fed will end its fight against inflation anytime soon. T. Rowe Price found that through October, those names rose 53.2% compared to a 1.2% year-to-date return for the other 493 companies in the S&P 500. Dom Rizzo, a portfolio manager of global technology equity strategy at T. Rowe Price, agreed that the Magnificent 7's momentum won't stop just because the group is pricey.

LIVING THE BEATLES LEGEND: The Untold Story of Mal Evans, by Kenneth WomackHe was a “gentle giant.” A “teddy bear” who once posed with a koala. A “lovable, cuddly guy.” Of all the people in the Beatles’ entourage, Mal Evans was indisputably the most Muppet-like. You may have seen the 6-foot-3 Evans looming over shoulders in “Get Back,” Peter Jackson’s blockbuster 2021 documentary. He was rarely called the fifth Beatle, as was his comrade in factotum-dom, Neil Aspinall, but certainly could have qualified as the sixth or seventh. Unlike Aspinall and so many other Beatles associates, however, Evans did not receive an obituary in The New York Times when he died at 40 on Jan. 4, 1976.

Fain’s sermonette underscores a trend that has largely gone unnoticed: The Social Gospel movement is making a comeback. Jemal Countess/Getty ImagesIt might sound like hyperbole to say that this resurgent form of the Social Gospel is changing our politics. He reached deep into the Social Gospel throughout the UAW strike, routinely deploying what one commentator called “strikingly Christian rhetoric.”Christopher H. Evans, author of “The Social Gospel in American Religion: A History,” said he heard the Social Gospel in Fain’s UAW speeches. “It (The Social Gospel) won’t have the institutional muscle it had before, but you could still have these voices and followers.”The climate in contemporary America seems ripe for the Social Gospel message. And the soaring optimism of old Social Gospel reformers may now seem as outdated as wobbly black-and-white silent films.

A Dishy Tell-All About Emily Weiss’s Glossier

GLOSSY: Ambition, Beauty, and the Inside Story of Emily Weiss’s Glossier, by Marisa MeltzerA Glossier brick and mortar opened in my neighborhood last fall, and because that neighborhood is Williamsburg, I could comfortably declare it to be the brand’s time of death. Here lies Glossier, the millennial pink tombstone’s black etching would read, makeup for pretty people. That the Williamsburg Glossier is neighbored by retail stores for Parachute (bedding), Mejuri (jewelry) and Warby Parker (glasses) does not feel coincidental; all the formerly online-only direct-to-consumer brands are arranged on North Sixth Street in a neat little row. But when the first permanent Glossier showroom opened in SoHo in 2016, it was the cool girl’s place to go after work. Its founder, Emily Weiss, remains the star student in a class of girl bosses who have either imploded or flamed out.

Aug 1 (Reuters) - Britain's Domino's Pizza Group (DOM.L) announced a 70 million pound ($89.78 million) share buyback programme on Tuesday and raised its annual profit forecast range helped by higher orders and sales in the first half of the year. Resilient customer spending has helped the UK hospitality slowly recover from pandemic lows amid pressures from high costs. In the first half of the year, total orders increased 2.8% to 35.4 million, helping the company to post an 8.2% rise in underlying core profit. The company, a franchisee of U.S.-based Domino's Pizza Inc (DPZ.N), said it now expects an underlying core profit of about 132 million pounds - 138 million pounds for the year. Analysts on average had expected 127.6 million pounds, according to a company-compiled consensus.

Russia's wartime economy is thriving, the New York Times reported Monday. Corporate loans have increased 19% in the year to June as investments grew, according to The Times, citing Russian central bank's figures. Russia's central bank has also been candid about its gloomy assessments of the economy — which at times were at odds with more bullish statements from the Kremlin. But, the institution has come under pressure from Moscow to give a more "upbeat assessment" about the country's economy, Bloomberg reported in February. In April last year, Russian central bank governor Elvira Nabiullina warned the country's reserves won't last infinitely.

Yoel Roth slammed Elon Musk's decision to reinstate a user that posted a child torture image. Yoel Roth, Twitter's former head of trust and safety, took a dig at Elon Musk's decision to reinstate an account that had posted an obscured image of a toddler being tortured. "For now, we will delete those posts and reinstate the account," Musk wrote on X, after McGee's suspension brought backlash from his right-wing supporters and a number of "Free Dom" posts. Roth, the site's former head of trust and safety, wrote on BlueSky that he found Musk's decision to be confusing. But after resigning from the role two weeks into Musk's ownership, Roth changed his tune.

Satya Nadella, chief executive officer of Microsoft Corp., during the company's Ignite Spotlight event in Seoul, South Korea, on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2022. Microsoft is emphasizing to investors that graphics processing units are a critical raw material for its fast-growing cloud business. OpenAI relies on Microsoft's Azure cloud to perform the computations for ChatGPT and various AI models, as part of a complex partnership. Those efforts and the interest in ChatGPT have led Microsoft to seek more GPUs than it had expected. Microsoft has begun looking outside its own data centers to secure enough capacity, signing an agreement with Nvidia-backed CoreWeave, which rents out GPUs to third-party developers as a cloud service.

Opinion | A Requiem for Diet Soda
  + stars: | 2023-07-27 | by ( Frank Bruni | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I mean the crunch-woosh of a can of diet soda being opened. It was Tab for a while and then, I think, Diet Rite — I get confused about the chronology. Tab, Diet Rite, Fresca, Diet Coke and their ever-expanding posse transcended mere beverage-dom. If Mom were alive today, would she still be drinking diet soda? Diet soda is at odds with self-esteem as many Americans now extol it, with wellness as they’ve come to practice it and, according to some studies and some critics, with health.

Nya (Karen Pittman) embraces her single-dom, and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) lands herself in the emergency room after a bad run-in with pot brownies. For a whole lot of people, the latter best describes how they are feeling about Twitter, the live social conversation app. Having overseen — devised, really — the demise of Twitter, Musk has also created a reasonable chance that he could now be in charge of a complete brand blowout, should this daring reboot eventuate in extinction for X. The app formerly known as “Twitter” had almost 370 million users globally in December of last year, after Musk paid (overpaid) $44 billion to buy it. Less than a year later, it is already down to 353 million users, and Statista projects the number will decline to 335 million in 2024. Threads reached 100 million users in five days, which was surely the biggest case in history of rustling wandering strays from the herd.

Can that real wage growth persist if the jobs market now loosens with a lag from the swingeing five percentage points of rate hikes in just 15 months? What's more, other surveys have yet to show inflation expectations falling so sharply or lifting confidence. The possibility of a disinflation spur to demand at this juncture may complicate that picture considerably. Importantly, the slower fall in inflation in both Britain and the euro zone means real wage growth remains negative - unlike the latest twist stateside. CNN —Two more suspects have been named in the alleged murders of British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, including the alleged mastermind of the crime, Brazilian police say. Phillips and Pereira were shot dead a year ago while they were returning from a reporting trip in the Amazon. Fisherman Janio Freitas de Souza has also been named as a suspect and has links to the illegal fishing criminal organization, the statement added. Both men have been imprisoned since July 2022, along with three other suspects and are awaiting trial, police told CNN. The deaths of Phillips and Pereira has drawn global attention to the perils often faced by journalists and environmental activists in Brazil.

LONDON, June 1 (Reuters) - One year after British reporter Dom Phillips was murdered in Brazil while working on a book about saving the Amazon rain forest, a group of journalists aims to complete the project, his family and former colleagues said on Thursday. They will use notes and transcriptions of interviews conducted by Dom Phillips and conduct their own research trips to the Amazon region to complete the missing chapters. Other journalists who also have experience covering issues related to the Amazon will fact-check and proofread the draft chapters, Watts said. "Dom was killed for this book," he said. "The least we can do is finish the task to which he had devoted the latter part of his life.

BRASILIA, May 19 (Reuters) - Brazil's federal police recommended misconduct charges be filed on Friday against two ex-officials of Indigenous agency Funai in the case of a journalist and a native expert murdered last June in the Amazon rainforest. The police said the two former officials failed to act on information ahead of the murders of British reporter Dom Phillips and Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira. Reuters was not immediately able to locate the two former Funai officials, or their lawyers, to request comment. The valley is a remote jungle area on the Peruvian border with Brazil that is home to the world's largest number of isolated Indigenous communities, as well as cocaine-smuggling gangs and illegal hunting and fishing rackets. Over the course of more than 20 years of the “Fast and Furious” — the 10th in the franchise, “Fast X,” arrives this weekend — battles have been fought, villains have been overcome, friends have become foes and lovers have been reunited. (There was even a case of alignment-altering amnesia.) Behind the scenes, though, the conflicts have been no less fractious, with stars variously attacking the producers, their castmates and the franchise itself. With so much drama onscreen and off, it can be difficult to keep track of who has feuded and who is still feuding. So in honor of “Fast X,” here’s a guide to the beefs of the “Fast and the Furious.”Brian vs. Dom
