My son was named after a cartoon dog: Copper, from the "Fox and the Hound." We have met many dogs named Copper in the nearly seven years of his life. The 1981 film follows a dog named Copper and a fox named Todd who become the best of friends, so it was only natural we had a fox-themed nursery when Copper was born. Bethaney Phillips and her husband named their first son Copper and their second son Colt. It's pretty straightforward, yet, here we are, finishing his kindergarten year, with people still surprised — and even delighted — at the boy named after the cartoon dog.

Extreme temperatures throughout Asia over the past month were made worse most likely as a result of human-driven climate change, a team of international scientists have said. The reading is the highest of the summer so far, and approached the town’s and country’s record highs of 53.5 C (128.3 F) and 54 C (129.2 F) respectively. CNN —Tensions are once again ratcheting up in the Taiwan Strait, with China launching military drills encircling Taiwan just days after the democracy swore in a new leader long loathed by Beijing. The Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) said it launched joint military drills involving the army, navy, air force and rocket force in areas around Taiwan early Thursday morning. The drills are being conducted in the Taiwan Strait – a narrow body of water separating the self-ruling island with mainland China – as well as north, south and east of Taiwan. The Chinese guided missile frigate Nantong, one of the vessels in the series of military drills around Taiwan. The defeated Nationalist Party fled to Taiwan, moving the seat of their Republic of China (ROC) government from the mainland to Taipei.

CNN —Of the dozens of people hurt Tuesday during turbulence on a Singapore Airlines flight from London, more than 20 have suffered spinal injuries, according to a Bangkok hospital that treated some of the passengers. Flight SQ321 from London to Singapore was cruising at 37,000 feet on Tuesday when the plane dropped sharply before climbing several hundred feet, according to flight tracking data. Those injured on the flight included citizens from Australia, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Spain, the United States and Ireland, the hospital previously said. Of the total 71 passengers who were reported injured on the flight, 55 people remain in hospital, including 40 at the Samitivej Srinakarin facility. Of the passengers and crew on board the original flight, 143 were flown to Singapore on a relief flight sent by Singapore Airlines on Wednesday morning.
