Opinion | Silicon Valley’s MAGA Moment
  + stars: | 2024-09-25 | by ( Chris Hughes | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I co-founded Facebook in college 20 years ago, but I left California and start-up culture behind long ago for public policy and economics. As we sat over scrambled eggs, chicken sausage and whole-wheat toast, I was struck by how many of the wealthiest and most powerful figures in Silicon Valley — including some I knew — were now loudly backing Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump claims that Mark Zuckerberg called him to say that he wouldn’t support a Democrat in November, although Mr. Zuckerberg’s spokesperson denied the claim. It would be easy to write off tech’s rightward drift as nothing more than the rich acting in their economic self-interest, but Silicon Valley has always been driven by profit, and it hasn’t tilted Republican since the 1980s. Even now, it remains largely Democratic, even though even some of Kamala Harris’s strongest Valley supporters worry about how she might approach tech policy.

"These statements are patently false because customers cannot shop for Aerie products on Amazon." Many of the alleged Aerie knock-offs referenced in the lawsuit are sold by third-party sellers on Amazon's online marketplace. New York CNN —A year ago, Caroline Ellison was preparing to testify against her former boss and ex-boyfriend in one of the biggest fraud trials in US history. Ellison, who ran Alameda, pleaded guilty to seven federal counts of fraud and conspiracy shortly after FTX’s collapse. A jury last year convicted former crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried on multiple counts of federal fraud and conspiracy. Over three days on the stand, Ellison, who is 29, repeatedly reinforced that throughout her years at Alameda, the buck stopped with Bankman-Fried. While sentencing is entirely up to Judge Kaplan’s discretion, legal experts say it’s highly unlikely Ellison will end up in prison.

Routh, allegedly “stalked” Trump in Florida for more than a month, prosecutors told a federal magistrate judge on Monday, with cell phone data allegedly placing Routh at the golf course as well as Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence across several days between August 18 and the day Routh was arrested. Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond called the devices “a huge problem,” adding they were still investigating whether the shooters used a switch or another type of weapon. “Machine gun conversion devices have no place in our community,” US Attorney Prim Escalona said. Woodfin, the Birmingham mayor, noted that conversion devices are illegal federally but not under state law, and he called on the state legislature to ban the devices. Last week he participated in a demonstration at a Montgomery shooting range in which trained firearm experts tried (and failed) to aim while using the conversion devices. This year, the city of Chicago filed a lawsuit against Glock, alleging the handgun company has failed to prevent the use of conversion devices on its weapons.

Since October 8, the day after Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel, there has been regular cross-border fire between Hezbollah and the Israeli military. Hezbollah first fired at Israel to protest the war in Gaza, demanding a ceasefire there as a condition to end its attacks. Should Israel enter full-scale war with Hezbollah, experts say it will face a much stronger threat than Hamas – and commensurate costs. “It’s devastating on the Israeli economy, on Israeli society,” Guzansky said, adding that the impacts will live on for years to come. Domestically, while Israelis showed a greater appetite for fighting at the outset of the Gaza war, polls show that domestic support has waned over the last months.

That standard guidance will be circulated Monday, seven days before a shutdown could occur. Should lawmakers fail to pass a funding bill, millions of federal workers and military personnel would be affected by a shutdown. Another 1.4 million federal employees may have to work without pay, though some of these positions are funded through resources other than annual appropriations, she said. All federal employees are guaranteed back pay, though contractors are not. Even the threat of a shutdown can disrupt the lives of federal employees, who could have to forgo their paychecks.

Israel and the Hezbollah militant group exchanged heavy fire across Lebanon's border on Sunday, fueling fears of a wider conflict in the region as the monthslong war in Gaza continues to rage. “Dozens of rockets hit Israel which destroyed homes, cars and communities.” Israel Defense Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani said on X. In a separate statement, the IDF said roughly 150 rockets, cruise missiles, and drones were launched at Israel. “This is a blatant attack on the Al Jazeera channel and Al Jazeera Network and those who are working with them, as well as on the freedom of speech and the task of delivering the truth,” al-Omari told Reuters. Victims' families and a survivor of a Maryland bridge collapse that killed six people filed claims Friday for wrongful death and punitive damages against the owner and the operator of the massive cargo ship that crashed into the bridge earlier this year. The 100,000-plus-ton ship Dali slammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the early hours of March 26 as a work crew was fixing potholes. Six construction workers died when the bridge went crumbling down into the Patapsco River. The nearly two dozen crew members on the ship survived, along with two pilots who were helping the vessel navigate the harbor. Days after the bridge collapse, the ship’s Singapore-based owner and manager petitioned a Maryland court to limit their monetary liability to $43.67 million, the value of the ship and its cargo, based on a pre-Civil War provision of maritime law.

The untroubled July arrival of the country’s first same-sex dating reality show, “The Boyfriend,” on streamer Netflix, may be another sign that normalization of queerness in Japan is on the way. “It’s no different from the familiar reality shows we’ve seen before. The only thing that felt odd or questionable was that, while there have been plenty of heterosexual reality shows, there have been so few featuring same-sex couples, and none in Japan,” casting director Taiki told Variety. The commentators included central host Megumi, an entertainer; drag queen Durian Lollobrigida; Tokui Yoshimi, a veteran of previous reality shows including “Terrace House”; Horan Chiaki; and style diva Thelma Aoyama. “As this was Japan’s first romance reality show featuring male same-sex relationships, it was crucial to have someone from that community in the studio,” Lollobrigida told Variety.
