Protesters demonstrate against the National Election Council certification of President Nicolas Maduro's reelection in Caracas, Venezuela, on Tuesday, July 30, 2024. The AP processed almost 24,000 images of tally sheets, representing the results from 79% of voting machines. National Electoral Council President Elvis Amoroso attributed the delay in updating results to "massive attacks" on the "technological infrastructure." The AP could not independently verify the authenticity of the 24,532 tally sheets provided by the opposition. The tally sheets, known in Spanish as "actas," are lengthy printouts that resemble shopping receipts.

Harvard University said on Friday that its interim president, Alan M. Garber, would lead the university through the 2026-27 academic year, offering a dose of stability to a campus rocked by turmoil. Dr. Garber took over at Harvard in January when Claudine Gay resigned after weeks of criticism over her testimony at a congressional hearing about antisemitism on campus and accusations of plagiarism in her academic writings. Penny Pritzker, senior fellow of the Harvard Corporation, the university’s highest governing body, said in a message to the campus on Friday that “interim” would be dropped from Dr. Garber’s title “to recognize his distinguished service to the university and to underscore our belief that this is a time not merely for steady stewardship but for active, engaged leadership.”The university said it would begin a search for a successor to Dr. Garber in 2026. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

The risk was two to three times higher in people born in 1990 for pancreatic, kidney and small intestine cancers, compared to people born in 1955. Liver cancer diagnoses in women followed the same pattern. About 20% of cancer diagnoses in the U.S. are linked to excess body weight, according to the American Cancer Society. Obesity rates in the nation changed little in the 1960s and 1970s but increased sharply after that. Among children, obesity rates grew from 5% to 17% in the same period.

It was a particularly extreme section of Roberts’ opinion – decided by the kind of 5-4 vote the chief justice usually tried to avoid. McKissack, 63, is the founder and CEO of Washington D.C.-based construction firm McKissack & McKissack, which she launched with $1,000 from her savings in 1990. Southwest Airlines will start assigning seats to passengers, ending its longstanding policy of allowing passengers to pick their seats once they have boarded, the airline said on Thursday. The new procedure will be implemented to increase revenue and in response to feedback from customers, 80 percent of whom report preferring an assigned seat, Southwest said. “This is the right choice — at the right time — for our customers, our people and our shareholders,” said Bob Jordan, the president and chief executive of Southwest. The new policy was reported earlier by The Wall Street Journal. The changes bring Southwest, which for years has distinguished itself by offering low prices and a simple business approach, more in line with conventional airlines like American Airlines and United Airlines.

CNN —Sealed bottles of tattoo and permanent makeup ink, including some marked as sterile, contained millions of potentially dangerous bacteria, according to new research by the US Food and Drug Administration. Earlier studies have found high levels of bacterial contamination within sealed and sterile bottles of ink. Unfortunately, the study’s findings were not surprising, said John Swierk, an assistant professor of chemistry at Binghamton University, State University of New York, who has studied tattoo ink contamination. For example, using the same gloves to touch a client and the ink bottle is a hazard that can lead to tattoo ink contamination. “Tattoo inks are in the process of being regulated due to the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (of 2022) but much of that law dealing with tattoo inks has yet to be implemented,” Swierk said.

So whether you have confidence or succeed, even at a small task, it leads to success and then even more confidence. “The greatest source of success is success,” Robertson said. If confidence is on one end of the spectrum, anxiety is at the other, Robertson said. “Confidence is linked to the action systems of the brain,” Robertson said. People with a “growth” mindset believe that with effort you can learn abilities and cultivate talents; conversely, those with a “fixed” mindset believe talents and abilities are innate — you either have them or you don’t.

Researchers believe that the nearly mile-long (1.6-kilometer) crossing of the crocodile-infested Kazinga Channel is the longest documented swim by lions. They were likely in search of females after losing dangerous fights to another group of male lions — and to avoid humans while doing so, according to the researchers. The circumstances surrounding eyed needles raised a number of questions. How do you alter your appearance for social purposes? “We don’t need to have eyed needles to manufacture clothing,” he said. This evidence would support the theory that eyed needles played a role in decoration, without ruling out their use for tailoring. “Our study shows that eyed needles are a marker for this change in the function of clothing, from thermal to social necessity,” he added.

She was later trained by math teacher Wang Runqiu at Lianshu Secondary Vocational School, where she studies fashion design. Social stigma for vocational studentsAmong the cacophony of commentary, some suspect the harsh public scrutiny of Jiang is rooted in social prejudice against vocational students. But structural discrimination in China’s schools, universities and workplaces means society still favors academic degrees over trades.
