Critical Role promotes the game by streaming it on their Twitch channel to their 1.3 million fans . "You are not going to feel like an overpowered warrior in this game," O'Brien told me. To be sure, Critical Role and the projects the company is running, from animation to new tabletop games, are prime targets for investment in nerd world. People are surprised to learn that Mari Murdock, 36, is a professional game master, a role in which she organizes and narrates tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons. Dungeons & Dragons is an open-ended tabletop game in which the narrative is shaped by the players' choices, whether that's through combat, puzzles or negotiation. But as Murdock played tabletop games through the 2010s, she grew more confident in the skills it takes to run a good game. The timing was fortuitous, as tabletop gaming became more popular during the pandemic. For Murdock, gaming allows you to immerse yourself in "a pretend situation where you are imagining that you are someone else.

As an immigrant who came to this country from Peru at age 4, I spent half of my days in kindergarten occupied with learning the rules of the English language. At home, my mom would often create games to help my sister and me preserve our Spanish and improve our grammar. But as my parents became more fluent (and my sister and I more dominant) in English, the boundaries became blurred. Being bilingual empowered us to break barriers beyond the rules and definitions attached to words. Some ideas are so embedded in Latin American and Spanish cultures that they exist implicitly.

If the Federal Reserve wants to lower inflation, they need to cut interest rates, according to JPMorgan. JPMorgan strategist Jack Manley said lower interest rates would help lower shelter costs. "You're not going to see meaningful downward pressure on shelter costs until the Fed lowers interest rates," Manley said. The cast of Critical Role launched the open beta for their new gaming system, "Daggerheart," on Tuesday. Last year, people packed into a sold-out Wembley Arena to watch the eight-person cast of Critical Role play "Dungeons & Dragons." But on Tuesday night, they took a break from the game that made them famous and launched "Daggerheart," their answer to "Dungeons & Dragons." The previous edition's Open Game License, or OGL, allowed creators to publish and profit from work compatible with the game. It's possible to rebuild your "Dungeons & Dragons" characters in "Daggerheart," and the complex capabilities built into the game allow for extended narrative-driven campaigns.

March 12 marks Equal Pay Day this year
  + stars: | 2024-03-12 | by ( Jeanne Sahadi | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
New York CNN —March 12 marks Equal Pay Day in the United States, a symbolic date representing the number of days women have to work into the current year just to make the same amount of money men made in the prior one. In dollars and cents, for every dollar a man earns, a woman is paid 84 cents, according to the National Committee on Pay Equity and the Equal Pay Today campaign. If part-time workers and those not employed year-round are included, the gender pay gap is worse, at 78 cents on the dollar, said Deborah Vagins, national campaign director of Equal Rights Advocates and director of Equal Pay Today. The gender pay gap is typically widest when comparing the earnings of White men to Black, Hispanic or Native American women. Equal pay for equal work has been the law of the land for more than a half-century, yet women still cannot get fair treatment when it comes to employment and earnings.

Researchers at the tech job board surveyed 6,166 of the site's registered users and visitors near the end of 2023 to understand how tech workers feel about their salaries. But despite making almost double the amount the typical American does, tech workers surveyed reported feeling increasingly dissatisfied with their salaries. Tech workers early in their careers reported feeling more dissatisfied with how much they make than those with over 15 years of experience. "Now that companies are right-sizing staff and their salaries, they're also limiting bigger increases on salaries that became standard in previous years." Still, challenging economic conditions don't necessarily mean it's impossible for tech workers now to land a highly coveted, well-paying job.

Sports M&A nearly tripled in three years to $27.9 billion in 2023, driven by deals for team franchises, the Alignment Growth report showed. This fire adds to an ever-lengthening list of rapidly spreading, destructive wildfires in the US and elsewhere. To understand why the Texas fires have been so fierce you have to look to last spring, said Luke Kanclerz, a fire analyst at Texas A&M Forest Service. It only took a short period of warm, dry weather for them to dry out further, providing a carpet for the fire to spread. Research has found climate change is fueling the rapid intensification of hurricanes, pushing storms to explode at a deadly pace.
