Nearly an hour later, the iPhone maker announced a much-rumored partnership with OpenAI to bring its ChatGPT technology to devices later this year. “I think Apple will take a pragmatic approach to the OpenAI partnership,” Wood said. Apple said it will not share any personal user information with OpenAI, so inquiries made through ChatGPT won’t be linked to an Apple user’s account. So it came as no surprise when some industry watchers, including Elon Musk, were quick to react to Apple’s partnership with OpenAI. “When users do query ChatGPT, Apple will track the prompts and gather metrics to improve its own models,” he said.

The maker of iPhones and iPads has formed a "golden cross," a technical indicator signaling when a stock's moving average over the last 50 days rises above the same moving average tracking the last 200 days. It's the first time since March that Apple's 50-day moving average trades above its 200-day counterpart. Despite the outperformance, Apple shares have advanced less than 11% this year, underperforming both the broad S & P 500 and technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite . While the golden cross can indicate upside momentum, Wall Street expects a correction ahead. Guests posing for a group photo at the "Let's Go the Extra Mile" hospitality campaign launch ceremony at the Central Government Office in Hong Kong on June 3, 2024. In response, the Hong Kong government launched a campaign – titled "Let's Go the Extra Mile" – encouraging frontline staff and members of the public to demonstrate good hospitality and "reinforce Hong Kong's brand as the best tourism destination." Hong Kong's currency is pegged to the U.S. dollar, which has helped the city's status as an international financial center. "Both have become equal problems for Hong Kong," he said. While the city's borders were closed during the pandemic, nearby Shenzhen continued to develop into a top-tier Chinese city, Lee said.

The trial of Senator Robert Menendez was paused on Thursday after the judge announced that one of the senator’s co-defendants, Fred Daibes, a New Jersey real estate developer, had tested positive for Covid-19. The judge, Sidney H. Stein, said it was “the expectation and the hope of the court” that the trial could resume Monday, given revised federal Covid guidelines and depending on how quickly Mr. Daibes begins to recover. Mr. Daibes is on trial with the senator and another defendant in a sprawling bribery conspiracy case in which prosecutors say Mr. Menendez, 70, and his wife, Nadine Menendez, 57, accepted gold, cash and a luxury car in exchange for the senator’s agreeing to dispense political favors at home and abroad. Ms. Menendez’s trial was postponed until at least August because she is being treated for breast cancer. All four defendants have pleaded not guilty.

Despite all the good news, there’s one giant, inescapable reason why people don’t feel like the economy is as good as it actually is. Shelter costs — which include rent and an estimated cost of homeownership — were up 5.4% from a year ago. There are some early signs that the housing market is becoming a bit less stuck. At the same time, the one-two punch of inflation and high borrowing costs have discouraged first-time buyers, reducing competition for houses. Of course, as Powell noted in his speech Wednesday, it may take “years” for housing inflation to normalize.

Given this truism, it's no wonder that the populations of America's so-called superstar cities have stagnated while the Sun Belt's metropolitan areas have boomed. The COVID-era transition to more remote work accelerated this process of "domestic offshoring," a recent study by the workforce-analytics company ADP found. Domestic offshoring regionally segregates middle- and working-class employees from their employers, making it far more difficult for the former group to advance professionally. Domestic offshoring threatens to lock in these effects, potentially costing the country trillions of dollars in forgone wealth creation. But if domestic offshoring persists, fewer of the city's other residents will be middle-class professionals; those people will tend to congregate in domestic-offshoring sites.

Stock futures oscillated near the flatline Tuesday night as investors awaited the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision and May's consumer inflation data. S&P 500 futures inched lower by 0.01%, while Nasdaq 100 futures were little changed. During Tuesday's trading, investors' rotation into Apple helped lift the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite to fresh closing highs. Investors are looking to Wednesday's conclusion of the Fed's two-day policy meeting, which will feature an rate policy decision and a subsequent press conference with Fed Chair Jerome Powell. Investors have grown increasingly concerned that the recent strong jobs report and sticky inflation support a higher-for-longer interest rate environment.

This disastrous mindset has hollowed out Silicon Valley's ability to innovate and caused regular people to grow increasingly frustrated with everyday tech. The large platforms have generally ignored this feedback for one big reason: The tech industry has been taken over by career managers. Now Google Search is more profitable and worse, elevating spammy content and outright scams, a problem exacerbated by artificial intelligence. AdvertisementBut today's tech products feel built to sell a dream of the future rather than solve a customer's existing pains. As long as the tech industry is controlled by people who don't build things, it will continue to build products that help raise growth metrics rather than help consumers with tangible problems.
