U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks on infrastructure during an event at the Amtrak maintenance facility in Bear, Delaware, U.S., November 6, 2023. REUTERS/Leah Millis/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 7 (Reuters) - President Joe Biden on Thursday will meet with United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain and tout the decision of Chrysler-parent Stellantis to reopen a shuttered assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, a White House official said. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker will attend Thursday's event, where Biden will make remarks, the official said. The new Stellantis investments include $1.5 billion in the Toledo Jeep operations, including building an EV Jeep Wrangler in 2028. The UAW said Stellantis wanted to cut 5,000 jobs going into the talks.

Nov 6 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers (UAW) union on Monday said members at the General Dynamics (GD.N) plants at Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania have voted to ratify a new tentative agreement. Like its peers, General Dynamics has struggled with supply and labor shortages at a time when weapons demand is on the rise due to the war in Ukraine, conflict in the Middle East and tensions in U.S.-China relations over Taiwan. UAW members at the company make military vehicles including tanks and light armored vehicles, according to the union. In the latter half of October, the UAW, in separate strike actions, had reached tentative agreements with the Detroit Three automakers, General Motors (GM.N), Ford (F.N) and Stellantis (STLAM.MI). Unifor members ratify new contract with Stellantis in Canada

REUTERS/Gonzalo Fuentes/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 6 (Reuters) - Canadian labor union Unifor said on Monday its members voted in favor of a new contract with Chrysler-parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). Unifor reached a tentative deal with Stellantis on Oct. 30 after a brief strike at the Franco-Italian automaker's facilities in Canada. The agreement was ratified after positive votes from members at Stellantis facilities in Windsor, Brampton, Etobicoke, Mississauga and Red Deer. Unifor used the "pattern bargaining" approach in its talks with the automakers, reaching a deal first with Ford (F.N) and General Motors (GM.N). Meanwhile, more-than-a-month old strike by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union against the Detroit Three automakers in the United States also ended in October.

He said the UAW's new contracts were so good they had even led to nonunion auto workers getting raises. Honda (7267.T) told Reuters it was evaluating the recent UAW deals with the Detroit Three automakers and would remain competitive. "If (Toyota workers) come calling, which they have, we're going to educate them and be there for them," Smith told Reuters. Toyota's move earlier this week to raise wages is in line with the strategy the Japanese automaker and other nonunion automakers have used to keep UAW organizers at bay. Nonunion automakers have kept hourly wages close to the UAW rates at the Detroit Three.

Other nonunion logistics and service parts employees are getting wage hikes. The media and organizing project Labor Notes earlier reported the wage hikes and other details, citing a company document. The pay of production Toyota workers in Kentucky at top scale will rise by $2.94 to $34.80 an hour. Under the new tentative agreements with General Motors (GM.N), Ford Motor (F.N) and Stellantis (STLAM.MI), UAW workers will receive a wage hike of 11% upon ratification and 25% in wage hikes through April 2028. The UAW declined to comment on the Toyota wage hikes.

Morning Bid: Refunding relief stokes bond-led bounce

Traders work on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 23, 2023. But relief in Treasuries, the villain of the piece for several weeks, is probably the most significant marker for the remainder of the year. And there were further soothing noises for world bonds, even if not for global growth, from surprisingly weak Chinese business surveys for October. Overall, the picture pointed to another positive day for Wall Street stocks, with futures marginally positive ahead of the open as the Fed meeting gets underway. The UAW's talks, replete with weekly addresses by union President Shawn Fain, were among the most unabashed. Nissan (7201.T) and other competitors may feel compelled to boost wages to retain their workforce. A public deal announcement with Stellantis is expected later Saturday afternoon or early evening, the sources said. Stellantis shuttered its assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, early this year, leaving 1,300 workers without jobs. The tentative contract deal will have provisions on the use of temporary workers, the sources said, adding Stellantis has agreed to significant investment. Fain and other senior union leaders are briefing local UAW chiefs by video conference, the sources said. The deal is also expected to include investments in other U.S. plants, including the Trenton engine plant, the sources said.

Ford's Detroit rival General Motors (GM.N) on Tuesday withdrew its 2023 profit outlook due to the strike. Ford said third-quarter revenue rose 11% to $44 billion, with profit of $1.2 billion compared with a year-earlier loss of $827 million. Cruise's AVs posed an "an unreasonable risk to public safety," and "are not safe for the public's operation" California's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) said in a statement. The suspension, which came after a series of accidents involving Cruise vehicles, is a major setback to GM's self-driving technology unit and to the nascent autonomous vehicle (AV) industry. That month, a Cruise robotaxi was involved in a crash with an emergency vehicle in San Francisco. Barra said the Cruise robotaxis have better safety records than human drivers. Fain acknowledged some union members want to vote on the offers the union bargainers have in hand. He urged UAW members not to give in to what he called "fear, uncertainty, doubt and division" sowed by the companies. The UAW had no immediate comment ahead of a planned Facebook address by its president, Shawn Fain, at 4 PM ET. An American flag flies in front of the United Auto Workers union logo on the front of the UAW Solidarity House in Detroit, Michigan, September 8, 2011. The union said the strike by 190 workers was over after a tentative agreement had been ratified. About 34,000 UAW members remain on strike at the Detroit Three automakers - Ford Motor (F.N), General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). The UAW last expanded its strike on Oct. 11 when it walked out at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant, the company's largest plant worldwide. Ford said late on Wednesday that it was temporarily laying off another 150 workers because of the strike, bringing the total to 2,730 workers furloughed since the start of the strike.

Earlier this week, consultancy firm Anderson Economic Group estimated the economic losses related to supplier wages and earnings of about $2.67 billion through fourth week of the strike.
