After 25 years of autocratic rule, a significant portion of Venezuelans in the country and in exile had enormous expectations of change. But of “those millions who have emigrated from Venezuela, criminals are the minority,” he said. In addition, experts on Venezuela told Noticias Telemundo that there is no evidence of a state policy aimed at sending criminals to other countries. The Trump campaign has also stated that Kamala Harris is “intentionally importing millions of illegals in hopes of turning them into Democratic voters,” which is also false. “The campaign does not comment on hypothetical situations,” Florez said, adding that “the Republican National Committee’s statement is identical to that of the Trump campaign."

Scientists are very confident that climate change is increasing rainfall rates – how hard the rain is falling – and the amount of rain a storm can produce. Floodwaters have washed out roads and several state road closures are in effect. A team was heading out to survey the damage, which included “quite a bit” of structural and road damage, National Weather Service meteorologist Seth Kutikoff told the Associated Press. Northeast Vermont and other portions of the state are also still recovering from more extensive flooding just over a year ago. Last year’s flooding caused numerous road and bridge washouts, land and mudslides resulting in significant property damage and loss.

The Basic Income Guaranteed: Los Angeles Economic Assistance Pilot, or BIG:LEAP, gave over 3,200 households $1,000 in monthly no-strings-attached cash payments for 12 months starting in January 2022. BIG:LEAP compared the outcomes of households receiving cash payments to nearly 5,000 households with similar incomes and family situations in the control group. In the last six months, participants were more likely to establish proximate safety and work toward protecting themselves in the future. Overall, it stands in contrast to what some critics of basic income argue, including that cash payments majorly reduce employment or don't prepare participants for the future. Housing cost burdens decreased among all study participants.

Palestinians returned to the eastern side of Khan Younis in Gaza on Tuesday after Israeli forces pulled out of the area. The Israeli military has designated just one area of the Gaza Strip as a “humanitarian zone” for displaced people — and that area keeps shrinking. In the latest downsizing, the military on Saturday ordered the evacuation of two more parts of central Gaza that had been part of the humanitarian zone. Since last week, Israel has evacuated more than a fifth of the area that it had previously declared a humanitarian zone. There is no more place for any tents at the beach or in Mawasi,” he added, referring to the humanitarian zone.

When the white Gen X child turned 27 in 2005, they could expect to make more than $34,000. But Mr. Cain did have a strong community — which he said taught him entrepreneurship and showed him he could dream big. Mr. Cain, 35, got a two-year degree in business management and first worked as a bank teller and financial adviser. At the same time, white millennials born to poor parents had a harder time than their white Gen X counterparts. Unlike Mr. Cain, Mr. Brown did not have a strong sense of community, as he bounced between his mother, his father and his grandparents.

Suleiman’s denial is part of a policy recently communicated to medical missions going into Gaza through Israel. Before the war, Palestinian medics and medics of Palestinian heritage who held other passports could apply to Israel for entry into Gaza and have no issues getting approval. Ambulances lined up in front of the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing during a visit of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on March 23. “We reiterate that we STRONGLY advice (sic) against any attempt of entering Gaza with a Palestinian background/roots,” the email stated. The ad disclosed that “applicants with a Palestinian ID or Palestinian roots are not allowed into Gaza.” The post has since been deleted.

Research shows that young adults are the unhappiest age groupBlanchflower's most recent working paper, co-authored with Alex Bryson and Xiaowei Xu, shows a change in the pattern, with happiness starting off low in young adulthood and increasing with age. Alongside other researchers, Blanchflower analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. But Wimsatt Childs agrees with Blanchflower that social media likely plays a role in this new pattern of unhappiness. "What social media has done in a lot of ways is it has amplified concerns that were already well underway," she says. Social media — apps like Snapchat, Instagram and TikTok — floods people with information and can lead to comparison among peers on a larger scale, she adds.

CNN —Kamala Harris has spent much more of her life as a prosecutor than as a senator or vice president – and that is exactly how she is now going to run against Donald Trump. The vice president had expected that to be part of her role making the case for Biden. “As a former prosecutor, Vice President Harris has a lot of experience holding convicted felons accountable,” said Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a former primary opponent in the 2020 Democratic race who quickly endorsed Harris after the news of Biden’s decision broke. “The prosecutor approach is really about just deconstructing an issue,” Harris told CNN in an exclusive interview after a campaign stop in Las Vegas in April. He was a for-profit college – literally,” a narrator says, as footage of first Harris and then Trump goes by.

After months of alternating between despair and terror, a lot of Democrats are feeling positively unburdened. In the day since President Biden stepped aside and the party coalesced behind Vice President Kamala Harris, a euphoric giddiness has fallen over the party. Intuitively, it seems like the newly effervescent vibes should help in the very serious project of defeating Donald Trump, but I’ve been curious if the political science literature backs that up. “I don’t know of any political science or economic forecasting models that explicitly include a measure of voter enthusiasm,” the political scientist Alan Abramowitz told me. But the scholar Samuel Popkin, whose books include “The Candidate: What It Takes to Win — and Hold — the White House,” said that intangibles like joy and passion can matter a lot.

Remember the 1990s, when everybody thought liberal democracy was the only game in town and the end of history was upon us? The near-assassination of former President Donald Trump has buttressed, instead, a feeling that crisis is upon us. Trust in public schools, banks, large firms, the news media and even religious organizations have similarly plummeted since the 1970s. We need a new democratic social contract that people can believe in, which is most likely to come from the Democratic Party. It must include a commitment to close the cultural chasm that has opened between the Democratic Party and many working-class Americans.

“His last act will not be getting knocked down,” said one longtime Biden 2020 campaign aide of the family and the inner circle. They loved saying in 2020 that Joe Biden won because the party, and not the pundits. Some have already “quiet quit,” going through the motions until Joe Biden gets to the end that many of them now believe is inevitable. Several people close to President Biden said on Thursday that they believe he has begun to accept the idea that he may not be able to win in November and may have to drop out of the race, bowing to the growing demands of many anxious members of his party. One of the people close to him warned that the president had not yet made up his mind to leave the race after three weeks of insisting that almost nothing would drive him out. But another said that “reality is setting in,” and that it would not be a surprise if Mr. Biden made an announcement soon endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement. Mr. Biden remained in isolation at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Del., after being diagnosed with Covid on Wednesday. But there was also caution about reading signs from a president with an exceedingly small circle of confidants.

Ever since President Biden’s calamitous debate last month, many Democrats who’ve lost faith in his candidacy have been frozen, fearing mutually assured destruction. The president has had a few good moments in recent weeks, including a great speech in Michigan. It’s time for Democrats who want a new nominee to hold hands and jump. There is no salvaging this campaign; Biden has lost his party’s confidence. The campaign is in a death spiral that threatens to pull down-ticket Democrats into the vortex.

Milwaukee CNN —Donald Trump will pull off his greatest feat yet as Joe Biden confronts his darkest hour. The 45th president’s comeback will only be fully realized if he becomes the second one-term president to win a return to the White House in November. But that’s one reason why his campaign is pulling its punches on Biden in the hope he stays in the race. President Joe Biden gestures to reporters as he steps off Air Force One upon arrival at Dover Air Force Base on July 17, 2024. After Trump escaped the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, his campaign has leveraged the aftermath to reshape his image.

Deputy White House chief of staff Annie Tomasini, a longtime aide to the Bidens, joins Donilon and Ricchetti in forming a protective bubble around the president. “The phones just kind of stopped ringing,” is how one senior Democrat put it. “Staff in general are just over the leadership here,” one White House official said. Inside the White House, senior administration officials are bracing for Republicans to call for Biden to resign the presidency if he doesn’t seek reelection. With Biden’s political future on the brink, the White House is fielding a steady stream of letters, telephone calls and message from Americans, too, from Democratic voters like Terri and John Hale.

The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump may have just kicked things into overdrive. As world leaders and politicians call for peace and unity, a poll found 50% of Americans believe political violence is a "very big problem" following the shooting at a Trump campaign event on Saturday that left two people dead. AdvertisementAn alarming 67% of Americans polled said the current political climate makes such violence "more likely" than normal. CNN —Weapons experts have identified the remnants of two US-made munitions used in an Israeli missile strike Sunday on a school in central Gaza that according to local authorities killed at least 22 people. Hundreds were taking refuge at the former school in Nuseirat when it was struck by two missiles. CNN video from the scene Sunday showed an ambulance at the school, as people frantically searched through the rubble and destroyed makeshift shelters in the schoolyard. Then another missile hit. Ball told CNN there were also fragments of a US-made Hellfire missile at the site, including the top of the guidance system.

Food May Be the Last Thing on Your Mind

We scroll our feeds, read endlessly, watch media people talk and talk and talk, listen to them opine. We anger and worry, mourn and resolve, and then return to the scrolling, the reading, the listening. Food doesn’t obviously have a role in our understanding of events playing out on the world stage. We process news together, around tables, in the presence of those we feed, with whom we eat. And when the food on those tables is made with care and served with affection, it has a palliative effect on the psyches of all who consume it.

What I am hearing from congressional Democrats about President Biden is this: He has done little to nothing to allay their fears. The caucus meetings House and Senate Democrats held this week were an airing of grievances and despair, but they didn’t chart a path forward. What they need is a process through which they can gather the information they need to make a final decision. There are two main camps among congressional Democrats. Representative Jerry Nadler, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, is among those who told his colleagues that Biden should step aside.

Supply and DemandThe case for housing deregulation starts with Econ 101: Allowing builders to significantly increase housing supply leads to much lower prices. It isn’t rising demand, as the U.S. population rose even faster back when housing prices were roughly stable. Standard of LivingWhat would happen if homebuilders could once again freely build until housing prices were driven back down to cost? The admittedly small number of studies on the link between YIMBY and babies support common sense: Less regulation lowers housing prices, and lower housing prices generally raise birth rates and hasten child-bearing. In a rational world, the panacea policy of housing deregulation would be a done deal.

But the president’s abject debate performance and defiance in the aftermath have badly weakened his standing in a party already unenthusiastic about his campaign. Any slip ups or confusion would rip off the fragile patch Biden has fixed on the dam of Democratic Party support. Biden needs one of his classic comebacks more than everStill, it’s too early to count Biden out. “We concluded that Joe Biden is old; we found out, and the polling came back that he’s old,” Fetterman told CNN. After a fruitless call with the pharmacy, Mr. Goldstein, a comedian and writer who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y., went for a walk to clear his head and had to sit down. “I went into a complete panic state,” Mr. Goldstein, 32, said. Mr. Goldstein only managed to resolve the matter with CVS after months of calling the pharmacy three times a week.
