(Reuters) - Russia and Niger, under military rule since a coup last year, have agreed to develop military cooperation, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday. According to Russian news agencies, Russian Deputy Defense Ministers Yunus-Bek Yevkurov and Alexander Fomin met Niger's junta-appointed Defense Minister Salifu Modi on Tuesday. Niger's military council, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, took power after ousting President Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023. Niger's junta-appointed Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine has also arrived in Moscow. During the visit, Zeine intends to discuss widening a partnership with Russia in the areas of defense, agriculture and energy.

A U.S. military aircraft crashed near a small island off the coast of southern Japan on Wednesday with six people onboard. Japan’s Coast Guard said that at least one of those onboard had been confirmed dead. The aircraft, a CV-22 Osprey operated by the U.S. Air Force, crashed close to 3 p.m. near Yakushima, according to a spokesman for the Japanese Coast Guard, which is conducting a rescue operation. It was initially thought that eight people were aboard the craft. The crash came just three months after three U.S. Marines died in another Osprey accident during a training exercise in Australia.

A Russian general has died after a "long illness," an official said in a Telegram post. Colonel General Gennady Zhidko was a senior officer heavily involved in attacking Ukraine. But after a series of humiliating defeats last year, Zhidko was removed from his post. Colonel General Gennady Zhidko, a former deputy defense minister, was leading Russian forces fighting in Ukraine from May 2022 to last autumn. Zhidko was eventually replaced by General Sergei Surovikin, who was then replaced by Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov in January this year.

Ukraine shared dramatic footage of soldiers apparently surviving a blast that hit a US-supplied Humvee. The video shows the inside of the vehicle suddenly engulfed in flames and smoke. In a tweet sharing the footage, the Ukrainian ministry thanked the US for the vehicle, saying: "Your Humvees save the lives of our soldiers." The Humvee's turret operator is seen exiting the humvee amid clouds of smoke, apparently unharmed, in footage shared on August 16, 2023. Ukrainian officials have previously praised the life-preserving qualities of speedy, robust military vehicles that have been donated by the US.
