Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday laid out how her economic proposals could specifically help young Black men, a key Democratic voting bloc that polls show Republican former President Donald Trump gaining ground with in this election cycle. "I think it's very important to not operate from the assumption that Black men are in anybody's pocket," Harris said in a sit-down interview with a panel from the National Association of Black Journalists. A new poll by the civil rights group NAACP released Friday found that more than a quarter of Black men under 50 years old support Trump over Harris. At NABJ, she described embarking on an "economic opportunity tour focused on Black men" earlier this year, before she was a candidate for president. Proposals like these could help Harris address two distinct vulnerabilities for the Democratic party in this election cycle: public perceptions of the economy, and young Black men who lean toward voting for Trump.

Elon Musk said his now-deleted X post about how “no one is even trying to assassinate” Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden was intended to be a joke. The tech billionaire’s comment came after what the FBI is investigating as an “apparent assassination” attempt on former President Donald Trump on Sunday. Musk, who owns X, had posted a response to a user who had asked, “Why they want to kill Donald Trump?” Musk, who took over X — then Twitter — in October 2022, has been known to elevate debunked conspiracy theories on the platform. Musk on Monday also responded to a post from Donald Trump Jr. on X about the former president. “The incitement to hatred and violence against President Trump by the media and leading Democrats needs to stop” Musk wrote.

KYIV, Ukraine — The shots fired by the Secret Service near former President Donald Trump at a Florida golf course Sunday are ringing out 5,000 miles away — in the Russia-Ukraine war. After what officials called the second assassination attempt on Trump in three months, a man named Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, was taken into custody and charged. Routh had already been extensively profiled in the Western media as an ardent supporter of Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s ongoing invasion. Ukraine sought Monday to distance itself from Routh, with the country’s international legion — the military unit that includes foreign volunteers — saying it had nothing to do with him. “We would like to clarify that Ryan Wesley Routh has never been part of, associated with, or linked to the International Legion in any capacity.

A new report commissioned by a labor-backed group is examining a problem many Democrats might rather ignore: the exodus of working-class voters from the party they used to call home. Some voices on the left have downplayed the significance or even denied the loss of working class voters, but the data is increasingly clear and signs of realignment are everywhere. “We take the right wing and Republican Party seriously when they say they want to be the party of the working class,” Mitchell said. Too often, the report argues, working-class voters are thought of as white men without college degrees, likely involved in a trade like plumbing. If nothing else, Mitchell hopes the research will push Democrats to take seriously the erosion with working class voters and to move beyond one-size-fits all stereotypes when thinking about how to talk to working-class voters.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters could issue its long-awaited presidential endorsement as soon as Wednesday, union spokesperson Kara Deniz confirmed to CNBC Monday following a meeting members held with Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington. We represent registered Republicans and independents," Teamsters president Sean O'Brien said in a press conference after the meeting. On Monday, Harris made her pitch for the union's endorsement in the meeting with rank-and-file Teamsters, along with O'Brien and other members of the union's executive leadership. The meeting came as both Harris and her opponent, Republican former President Donald Trump, court working-class voters. But the Teamsters president also condemned Trump's comments later in the summer, where the Republican applauded the idea of firing workers who threaten to strike.

Iowa shifted from being a swing state to one where Republicans are firmly in the driver's seat. In Iowa, the gender gap is as pronounced as it is in many swing states. The agency was commissioned within the Treasury Department, and the Secret Service was entirely focused on counterfeit money, a major problem of the day. Threatening presidents was not made a crime until 1917, the same year Congress approved Secret Service protection for the immediate family of a president. The Secret Service remained a part of the Treasury Department until 2003, when a massive government reorganization after the 9/11 terror attacks moved the Secret Service to the Department of Homeland Security. But the Secret Service is still tasked with fighting financial crimes. The entire Secret Service employs nearly 8,000 people for its protective and investigative missions, and it secures thousands of events each year.

So, they tend to use federal funding to reward housing policies they like. One example of the kind of bold federal law that some point to as a model has nothing to do with housing. In a recent op-ed in the New York Times, Harvard economist Edward Glaeser argued that the next administration should implement a housing construction law that follows the model of the Drinking Age Act. Metcalf, who also pointed to the drinking age law as a model for a housing mandate, conceded that the politics of it would be tricky. "The key question would be whether Congress has overstepped the blurry line between inducement and coercion," Hemel told Business Insider.

"I think if they implement those policies, we'll see a crash in the markets, no question about it." Meanwhile, Harris previously endorsed the tax increases proposed by Biden that include a 25% tax on unrealized gains for households worth at least $100 million, known as the billionaire minimum tax. However, people close to the Harris campaign, including investor Mark Cuban, have said she has no interest in taxing unrealized gains and there are doubts if any such plan could make it through Congress. The 68-year-old investor believes the economy could quickly tip into a recession as well if the specific plan to tax unrealized gains were to be implemented. The investor also said the lower taxes would spark economic gains that help raise revenues and close the deficit gap.

Casanova's view is shared by other experts who have said that both the Republican and the Democratic presidential nominees — Donald Trump and Kamala Harris — will remain tough on China. U.S. trade ties with China will remain tense no matter who wins the election in November, according to Carlos Casanova, senior economist at Swiss private bank UBP. Stronger tariffs by Harris cannot be ruled out either, given Biden not only retained Trump's tariffs, he piled on more. During the debate, Harris did not give specifics on her China policy, but said that "a policy about China should be in making sure the United States of America wins the competition for the 21st century." So it doesn't matter who wins the election," Casanova told CNBC's "Squawk Box Asia."

Appearing dazed and flustered by an unfamiliar and fast-changing political landscape upended by Harris becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, Trump has unleashed a torrent of mean-spirited missives, race-baiting insults and conspiratorial broadsides that even close allies and donors have acknowledged as unproductive in recent days. Loomer told CNN of the post: “It’s interesting how the media wants to, once again, falsely accuse me of being a racist. During an Aug. 28 speech in Wisconsin, Vance claimed Harris "let in 25 million illegal aliens." He specified in the same speech that those alleged 25 million people are currently "here in this country illegally." The Department of Homeland Security's Office of Homeland Security Statistics in April estimated that 11 million unauthorized immigrants were living in the U.S. as of Jan. 1, 2022.
