Deliberations began today after the judge overseeing Donald Trump’s trial in New York, Juan Merchan, delivered an array of legal instructions to guide the jury. During that time, they sent a couple of notes to the judge, including a request to hear his instructions again. Merchan said that the requests would be addressed tomorrow, when the jury returns for a second day of deliberations. While the jury could reach a verdict as soon as tomorrow, it also could take several more weeks, or they could fail to reach a verdict at all. Trump has been charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records on the eve of the 2016 election, and the jurors’ verdict on each count must be unanimous.

CNN —Federal Judge Aileen Cannon on Tuesday rejected special counsel Jack Smith’s request for a gag order against Donald Trump in the classified documents case, saying that prosecutors’ efforts to confer with the defendant was “wholly lacking in substance and professional courtesy.”In a brief order, Cannon slammed prosecutors for not following the court’s rules by failing to meaningfully confer with Trump’s defense lawyers about a potential gag order before making the request. Prosecutors can ask for a gag order again, Cannon said, once they give “sufficient time” to Trump’s defense team to read the motion and discuss it with prosecutors. Wilmington, Delaware CNN —The judge in Hunter Biden’s gun case issued a series of pretrial rulings Friday, handing wins to both sides and setting the contours of the upcoming trial. Federal Judge Maryellen Noreika sided with prosecutors on a key question about what they need to prove about Biden’s drug use when he bought a gun in 2018. Prosecutors said in court that they only want to introduce a small slice of the laptop material at trial. Lawyers said the trial could last up to two weeks, including jury selection, with the potential to go longer. She also limited what references prosecutors could make at trial to his lavish spending habits at the time of the gun purchase, narrowing such evidence to spending connected to drug use.
