CNN —Donald Trump is 0-for-an awful lot in Georgia since 2016. The Georgia Senate runoff represents Trump’s final opportunity to recast a painful midterm season in which his election-denying candidates flopped in swing states, casting a shadow over his nascent 2024 presidential bid. Georgia is the epicenter of American politicsThe Senate runoff in Georgia caps an extraordinary two years in which the state has emerged, somewhat unexpectedly, as the most competitive battleground in the nation. On the eve of the Senate runoffs in January 2021, Trump returned to Georgia to campaign for then-Sens.
An early vote that topped 1.85 million showed other positive signs for Warnock, with Democrats enjoying a 13-point edge — larger than the party’s 8-point lead in November’s early vote, according to TargetSmart’s model. Trump won't appear with Herschel Walker in Georgia in advance of the Senate runoff, per the NYT. Per Republican campaign officials who spoke with The Times, the Trump and Walker camps decided that an in-person visit from the former president might be too politically-risky. While Trump won't visit the Peach State in the remaining days of the runoff to support Walker, whom he encouraged to enter the Senate race last year, the former president will still chime in on the contest. Over the past two years, there are fewer states other than Georgia where Trump has had such an oversized impact in state politics. Many Republicans continue to blame Trump for his involvement in the dual Senate runoff elections last year, when then-Sens.

Brian Kemp has emerged as Herschel Walker's most powerful surrogate in the Georgia Senate runoff. Kemp, who won reelection as governor, didn't campaign with Walker during the general election race. This normally wouldn't be a notable act in GOP politics, but the Georgia Senate runoff election is not a normal contest. For that reason, Walker has found himself openly embracing Kemp, who came out of the general election as the biggest winner in Georgia politics. On November 7, Kemp flew around Georgia with most of the statewide GOP candidates — including Raffensperger — but Walker wasn't part of the mix.

Brian Kemp is set to testify Tuesday morning before the special grand jury investigating possible 2020 election inference by former President Donald Trump and his allies, a source familiar with the arrangements told NBC News. The scheduled testimony of Kemp, who won re-election last week, comes after a Georgia judge in August denied his bid to avoid testifying before the grand jury. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney ruled that Kemp does not have to testify until after the November election. Weeks after the 2020 presidential election, Trump told Fox News that he was “ashamed” he had endorsed Kemp in 2018. The former president recruited former Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., who sowed doubt on the 2020 election results, to challenge Kemp in Georgia’s gubernatorial primary.
"Just start adding zeroes and stop when you feel like it," said Chuck Clay, a former state Republican chair and former state senator. If the parties split those seats, the runoff in Georgia will determine control of the upper chamber. For a midterm, that ranks second to the $372 million spent on this year's Senate race in Pennsylvania. The most expensive race ever was the $515 million contest between Georgia Republican Senator David Perdue and Democrat Jon Ossoff, which Ossoff won in a runoff in January 2021. Some Republican voters said they hoped popular Republican Governor Brian Kemp, who had somewhat distanced himself from Walker during the general election, would provide support.

In recent weeks, however, Kemp had pulled away in the polls, leading Abrams in most surveys by upward of 6 percentage points. “Democracy failed in Georgia,” Abrams said after the contest, which was marred by allegations of voter roll purging and suppression largely affecting Black voters.

Trump has long blasted the governor for not helping him overturn Biden's 2020 win in Georgia. Kemp became a national figure after his first gubernatorial contest against Abrams in 2018 and once again after he refused to entertain then-President Donald Trump's entreaties to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. In Morjera's view, the governor has already earned another four years in office, but when it came to the 2024 presidential campaign, he was all in for a third Trump presidential campaign.
