Israel has confirmed the first operational use of its Arrow-3 system to intercept an enemy missile. AdvertisementAdvertisementIsrael has confirmed the first operational use of its Arrow-3 system to stop an inbound missile as the country's adversaries test the layers of its sophisticated air-defense network. An "Arrow 3" ballistic missile interceptor is seen during its test launch near Ashdod December 10, 2015. "The Arrow-3 system's capabilities enable longer range, higher altitude (exo-atmospheric), and more precise ballistic missile engagements," it adds. "For the first time, all the aerial defense systems are working simultaneously," the IDF said on Thursday.

Republican Senator Roger Marshall said: "Time is of the essence and it's imperative that the Senate not delay delivering this crucial aid to Israel another day," he said. The House bill would provide $14.3 billion for Israel as it responds to a deadly Oct. 7 attack by Islamist Hamas militants, but also cut the same amount of money from the IRS. "Our allies in Ukraine can no more afford a delay than our allies in Israel," said Senator Patty Murray, who chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee. The White House had said Biden would veto the House bill. Senate leaders are writing their own supplemental funding bill and hope to introduce it as soon as this week.

Twelve Democrats voted with 214 Republicans for the bill, and two Republicans joined 194 Democrats in objecting. Republicans have a 221-212 majority in the House, but Biden's fellow Democrats control the Senate 51-49. To become law, the bill would have to pass both the House and Senate and be signed by Biden. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office on Wednesday said the IRS cuts and Israel aid in the House bill would add nearly $30 billion to the U.S. budget deficit, currently estimated at $1.7 trillion. After the vote, Johnson urged the Senate and White House to quickly approve the bill.

WASHINGTON — A House committee exploring economic competition between the U.S. and China on Thursday released a damning report connecting retail giants Shein and Temu to a disproportionate number of import violations. Lawmakers argue the tariff violations give Temu and Shein unfair advantages over U.S. retailers. Both companies have faced allegations of human rights abuses: Shein for alleged forced labor in its supplier factories in the Uyghur region and Temu for allegedly failing to develop compliance with the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, the committee reported. Temu and Shein did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the report. Temu has previously said it is "not the importer of record with respect to goods shipped to the United States," and Shein has denied allegations of forced labor.

Ted Kaczynski carried out a 17-year bombing campaign that killed three people and injured 23 others. Kaczynski was suffering from late-stage cancer and was found unresponsive in his cell on Saturday. He died by suicide, four people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. They were not authorized to discuss Kaczynski's death publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity. Bernie Madoff, the infamous mastermind of the largest-ever Ponzi scheme, died at the facility of natural causes the same year.

His brother David turned him in after reading the terrorist's manifesto. The tip that ultimately helped the FBI find and arrest Kaczynski came from his very own brother, David. "I felt a kind of chill," David recalled at the 2007 lecture. Following the arrest, authorities found a number bombs being built in Ted's cabin, one of which was addressed, intended to be sent to his next victim." After turning his brother in, David Kaczynski became an anti-death penalty activist and was the executive director of New Yorkers Against the Death Penalty from 2001 to 2012.

The infamous Unabomber Ted Kaczynski has died at age 81. "I'm confident that I'm sane," Kaczynski told Time magazine in 1999. David Kaczynski wanted his role kept confidential, but his identity quickly leaked out and Ted Kaczynski vowed never to forgive his younger sibling. Ted Kaczynski was born May 22, 1942, in Chicago, the son of second-generation Polish Catholics — a sausage-maker and a homemaker. His brother fired him and Ted Kaczynski soon returned to the wilderness to continue plotting his vengeful killing spree.

Stores like Bed Bath & Beyond are an "unremarkable middle," Dennis said on the Remarkable Retail podcast. Fewer middle-income consumers mean a shrinking shopper base for retailers that historically catered to the middle class, Retail Dive reported in 2019. "The apocalyptic part is really about the collapse of the unremarkable middle," Dennis said on the podcast. That's putting new pressure on the "unremarkable middle," Dennis said. "Economic pressure is going to reveal more fragility on the part of many retailers," Dennis added.

Vice Media headlined a group of seven major companies that filed for bankruptcy in a recent 48-hour period. Fast-forward to the present, when Vice — saddled with liabilities of up to $1 billion — has filed for bankruptcy. Still, an uptick in bankruptcy filings clearly demonstrates increasing economic stress. Retailers from Bed Bath & Beyond to David's Bridal have filed for bankruptcy in recent weeks. Envision Healthcare — a medical-staffing company backed by KKR — was one of the six firms to declare alongside Vice.
But the sale came at a time when the bridal industry was beginning to change. While David's Bridal offered some pricier gowns, it was known primarily for affordable wedding dresses, and the lower end of the bridal market had become saturated. Plus, high-end designers had started to launch their own couture bridal lines and brides were starting to spend thousands of dollars on their dream dress. Signet Jewelers said an "engagement gap" in the US is contributing to declining ring sales. Company president Jamie Singleton projected the company needs to grow sales 25% by 2026 to return to engagement levels before the pandemic, CNN reported. According to Signet Jewelers — the largest jewelry company in the US and owner of Kay Jewelers, Jared, and Zales — retailers are suffering from an "engagement gap" that's been about three years in the making. "Engagement jewelry sales were lackluster in fiscal 2023, and we expect them to remain so for the balance of fiscal 2024." Signet Jewelers did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
"Simply stated we're in a freight recession." That line, uttered last Monday by Shelley Simpson, president of J.B. Hunt (JBHT), the fourth-largest trucking company in the United States, was the most memorable of the real first week of earnings season. If so, it would know that we're dealing with much more than a freight recession. It's not enough to offset the immense deflationary pressure emanating from the regional banks and the freight recession described by J.B. Hunt.
