April sees about 10% of all preannouncements for a given year on average, according to Goldman Sachs. Given that earnings announcements can cause stock volatility, whether they are scheduled or not, this could create an opportunity for options traders to capitalize. CNX, a natural gas company, has announced preliminary results in April four times since 2011, according to Goldman, while Delta has done so three times. The stock has since erased that drop, but the sharp one-day move likely created some winners among options traders. Health care is a sector that sees a higher-than-average number of preannouncements, according to Goldman, which could bode well for traders interested in HCA.

Dal Is the Ultimate Comfort Food
  + stars: | 2024-03-28 | by ( Priya Krishna | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
One of my favorite Hindi terms is “ghar ka khaana.” It literally means “home food,” but it also encompasses the singular joy and unfussiness of meals made in your own kitchen — the dishes that remind you of childhood, the ones you won’t often find in restaurants. My quintessential ghar ka khaana? To make dal feels like an alchemical feat, watching the pebbly lentils turn creamy, starchy and golden with turmeric. I love the sizzle of the hot, spiced ghee when it is poured into the lentils, the way that dal envelops a bowl of rice like a hug. The first time I published my mother’s recipes for dal in my cookbook, “Indian-ish,” it felt as if I was letting people in on a secret — a solution to their weeknight dinner woes, courtesy of my ancestors.

U.S. District Judge William Young told a JetBlue lawyer that he expected airline fares would rise if no-frills, ultra-low-cost Spirit no longer was around to "undercut everyone else" and drive down prices. The four largest U.S. carriers - United Airlines (UAL.O), American Airlines (AAL.O), Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) and Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) - control 80% of the domestic market. JetBlue and Spirit combined control about 8%, according to their lawyers. Duffy said allowing JetBlue's, the sixth-largest U.S. airline, and Spirit, the seventh-largest, to merge would result in higher prices and fewer flights once lower-cost Spirit was no longer competing. The Chile-based company, which leapfrogged U.S. majors American Airlines (AAL.O) and United Airlines (UAL.O), transported more than 260,000 passengers between the countries in the period. Average load factor in those flights, LATAM told Reuters, reached 89%. The results, according to ANAC, secured LATAM a 26% market share for flights between the two most populous countries in the Americas in the August-October period, above American Airlines' 22% and United Airlines' 20%. Year to date, American Airlines still leads the ranking with a 23.7% market share, slightly above LATAM's 22.4%, considering the number of passengers transported. In 2023 the U.S. carrier has so far ranked fifth in U.S.-Brazil traffic, also lagging behind Azul (AZUL.N).

Between 2018 and 2022, total revenue across major U.S. airlines from baggage fees increased from $4.9 billion to $6.8 billion, the senator said. Blumenthal also cited a report by a travel consultancy that found that eight leading U.S. airlines last year collected an estimated $4.2 billion in fees for seat selection. "U.S. airlines increasingly charge ancillary fees that obscure the actual cost of air travel," Blumenthal said in the letters. Airline CEOs in 2018 lobbied against bipartisan legislation to mandate "reasonable and proportional" baggage and change fees and convinced Congress to drop the plan. The U.S. Transportation Department last year proposed requiring airlines to disclose fees for baggage, ticket changes and family seating the first time an airfare is displayed.

Southwest Airlines planes are show at San Diego International airport in San Diego, California, U.S., May 18, 2023. The chief operating officer of Southwest Airlines (LUV.N) found himself in the eye of a storm after a blizzard last December forced the company to cancel almost 17,000 flights, disrupting travel plans for about 2 million customers. With this week's U.S. Thanksgiving holiday kicking off the holiday travel season, Watterson can ill afford another fiasco. Airlines have taken measures to beef up winter operations including investments in weather forecast technology and de-icing equipment, and increased staffing and training. To make its winter operations more resilient, Watterson said Southwest invested in de-icing trucks and de-icing pads across its network.

These are some of the forecasts for 2024 from Goldman Sachs chief US equity strategist David Kostin and his team. But that doesn't mean it's time to expect a full-on bull market or rapid economic growth anytime soon. So, to leave room for alternative outcomes, Kostin envisioned an even more optimistic scenario that would see rate cuts and stronger economic growth. The second strategy is to not shy away from growth stocks, but rather, be discerning. Yet, their forecasted sales growth is below their 2023 numbers.

"We will continue working to better facilitate high-standard trade that advances workers' rights through strong enforcement of labor standards." Biden was also to take part on Thursday in an event for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), a 14-nation group his administration established. Hopes for an IPEF trade deal were dashed this week. Asked how long an IPEF trade agreement could take to conclude, an administration official said most negotiations take years but the White House intended to work on an "accelerated timeline." REUTERS/Elijah Nouvelage Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Major U.S. airlines and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said Monday they expect record air travel over the Thanksgiving holiday air travel period. Airlines for America says Nov. 26 will be a record-setting air travel day with 3.2 million passengers. The record travel comes despite airline flight cuts to New York airports because of air traffic controller staffing. A government watchdog said in June critical ATC facilities face significant staffing challenges, posing risks to air traffic operations. In the summer of 2022, there were 41,498 flights from New York airports in which ATC staffing was a contributing factor in delays.

A rebound in Asia is especially important for airlines where long-haul travel makes up a bigger mix of revenue. Travel spending in Asia Pacific is set to grow 41% this year to $567 billion, and rise to $800 billion by 2027, according to data from the Global Business Travel Association. The planned capacity, which has not been previously reported, is a strong rebound from 2022, when the carrier's Asia-Pacific traffic was 33% of 2019 levels. Travel to Asia is also a source of high-margin revenue at a time when soaring labor and fuel costs are pressuring profit and domestic fares are declining. Across the border, Air Canada said the increase in Asia Pacific capacity would more than double its overall system growth.

SRINAGAR, India Nov 11 (Reuters) - Three Bangladeshi tourists died in India's Kashmir region when some of the houseboats stationed in the picturesque Dal lake caught fire on Saturday, a police official said. "Three tourists Bangladeshi nationals were killed in one of the five houseboats destroyed due to fire," the police official said, adding that seven others were injured. Government figures show the Jammu and Kashmir region received over 16.2 million tourists in 2022, a record high since British colonial rule ended in 1947. The area is known for its snow-topped Himalayan mountains, fast-flowing rivers, meadows and wooden houseboats around beautiful lakes. Hindu-majority India has been fighting a decades-long separatist Islamist insurgency in Kashmir, which is also claimed by neighbouring Pakistan.

SEOUL, Nov 8 (Reuters) - Hyundai Motor Group's air taxi unit Supernal plans to build a manufacturing facility in the United States to make flying electric taxis for commuters, the South Korean auto group said on Wednesday. Electric air taxi-makers worldwide have pitched themselves as clean alternatives to decongest cities, attracting investment from airline heavyweights such as Delta Air Lines Inc (DAL.N) though they are still a long way away from commercial operations. Shin said the eVTOL taxi would be capable of flying at 120 mph (193 kph) and have capacity for a pilot and four passengers, targeting December 2024 for a test flight. Hyundai Motor, Kia Corp (000270.KS) and Hyundai Mobis (012330.KS), have together invested 1.2 trillion won ($915.70 million) in Washington-based Supernal since its establishment in 2021, according to regulatory filings. Last month, Hyundai Motor Group signed an agreement with Korean Air Lines (003490.KS) to work together to accelerate the design of electric eVTOL vehicles and air mobility ecosystem in South Korea.

JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes defended the deal being challenged by the U.S. Department of Justice in federal court in Boston, saying a merger was the only way to grow JetBlue into a long-term national challenger to the dominant airlines. "You'd never ever get to the size they are based on organic growth," he testified under questioning by JetBlue lawyer Ryan Shores. The Justice Department counters that passengers would suffer roughly $1 billion in net harm annually if JetBlue absorbs Spirit, causing fares to rise. The trial is a rarity for the Justice Department, which historically has approved airline mergers without trials conditioned on asset divestitures.

But it’s Michelangelo Buonarroti’s less bombastic work that’s on display to the public for the first time in the artist’s “secret room” in Florence. The tiny space sits beneath the Medici Chapels in Florence, where Michelangelo sculpted intricate tombs for members of the Medici family behind the church of San Lorenzo in the Sagrestia Nuova, or New Sacristry. The death sentence was rescinded after two months, and Michelangelo returned to work in Florence, before moving to Rome four years later. Francesco Fantani/Courtesy Musei del BargelloThe space has never been open regularly to the public before, but will open for visits on November 15 to highly limited numbers in order to preserve the drawings.

In the United States, many Indian Americans make Diwali catering orders through Facebook or WhatsApp. Urja Shukla Bhatt, of Warminster, Pa., has been taking catering orders for snacks and dinner since at least August. Her mother-in-law, Daksha Bhatt, helps make the snacks, but Urja Shukla Bhatt cooks the Indian dishes for dinner. Artist Michelangelo's sculpture known as Vatican Pieta is displayed at Opera del Duomo Museum next to its other versions in Florence, Italy, February 23, 2022. Michelangelo's "secret room" is located inside the Museum of the Medici Chapels and contains charcoal sketches of human figures which have been attributed to the artist, who is said to have taken refuge there in 1530. Dal Poggetto believed the artist had taken refuge in the room after falling foul of Pope Clement VII. Small guided groups of four people will be able to visit the room from Nov. 15 for a maximum of 15 minutes. The room is accessed via a cramped and narrow stairway and the number of weekly visitors will be capped at 100 people.

A United Auto Workers (UAW) union member wears a pin while picketing outside Ford's Kentucky truck plant after going on strike in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. October 12, 2023. With the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike entering its 36th day and the total economic cost pegged at more than $7 billion, companies are counting the cost of lost revenue amid an uncertain economy and persistent inflation. "The damage from the strikes will last long after UAW members return to work," University of Michigan professor Erik Gordon said. Earlier this week, consultancy firm Anderson Economic Group estimated the economic losses related to supplier wages and earnings of about $2.67 billion through fourth week of the strike. An agreement remains elusive so far and shares of automakers and suppliers have fallen since the strike began on Sept. 15.

Those concerns are battering airline stocks even as earnings reports point to a continuing consumer appetite for travel. While both United and Delta said travel demand is holding up, double-digit declines in airfares year-over-year suggest airline pricing power has peaked. United, which has not forecast profit for 2024, on Tuesday similarly said travel demand remains "strong and steady." New labor contracts as well as the higher fuel prices mean cost pressures aren't going away. American Airlines (AAL.O) and Alaska Air (ALK.N), who will report earnings Thursday, have cut their third-quarter profit estimates due to higher fuel costs.

CNN —Delta Air Lines is easing off some recent changes to its SkyMiles loyalty program that sparked criticism from frequent flyers. Fundamentally, Wednesday’s announcement keeps in place a significant overhaul announced just last month that transitioned the loyalty program from miles-based to spending-based. But the airline will make it easier for frequent flyers to reach certain rewards thresholds than the original changes. Last month, Delta CEO Ed Bastian pledged modifications to the program, but downplayed customer frustrations. Bastian said Delta gained so many elite status holders that demand for premium services, including lounge access at airports, overwhelmed the company.
