CNN —Forecasters will soon be able to see real-time mapping of lightning activity on Earth and keep a closer eye on solar storms unleashed by the sun thanks to a new weather satellite. The weather satellite lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 5:26 p.m. What sets GOES-U apart from other satellites is that it’s carrying a new capability to keep an eye on space weather. The coronagraph will provide continuous observations of the solar corona, or the hot outer layer of the sun’s atmosphere, which is where space weather events originate, said Elsayed Talaat, director of NOAA’s Office of Space Weather Observations. The instrument’s capabilities will allow NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center to issue warnings and watches one to four days in advance and “mark a new chapter in space weather observatoions,” Talaat said.

CNN —Toys “R” Us is proving artificial intelligence could have a future in film. The retail toy brand premiered a short promo film at the 2024 Cannes Lions Festival in France this week that was created almost entirely by using OpenAI’s new text-to-video tool. Toys “R” Us said it believes it is the first brand to debut a film using the technology. A spokesperson for the creative agency told CNN that Toys “R” Us has not yet made a decision if the promo will become a TV ad. OpenAI has not yet announced an official release date for Sora but rumors indicate it could launch later this summer.

The Conference Board’s latest consumer confidence index dipped to a reading of 100.4 in June from 101.3 in May. Readings of Americans’ confidence are typically closely watched, as consumer spending accounts for nearly 70% of US economic activity. Although the two indexes typically track similarly over time, the consumer confidence index is more influenced by employment and labor market conditions, while the Michigan sentiment index has a greater emphasis on household finances and the impact of inflation. The Michigan index’s preliminary reading for June, released earlier this month, showed sentiment levels were at a seven-month low.

Singapore Airlines is now in second position on the ranking, Skytrax announced Monday, followed by Emirates in third place which is one spot higher than last year. A series of other awards were presented by Skytrax alongside the top airlines ranking, including regional breakdowns and awards for different types of flights. Overall winner Qatar Airways was also voted the world's best business class and the top airline in the Middle East, while second-placed Singapore Airlines topped the lists for the world's best cabin crew and best first class, as well as the best airline in Asia. Some 241,000 Indonesian pilgrims were scheduled to make the journey to Mecca this year, according to Indonesian officials – the country’s largest ever quota. Mecca, the holy city that is central for Hajj pilgrims, saw temperatures soar to a record 125 degrees Fahrenheit (51 Celsius) on Monday. “Everybody is affected by deadly heat and sadly I am not surprised by (the Hajj) death toll,” he added. “Spending time outdoors in the extreme Mecca heat is risking death … so I am afraid there will be more deadly Hajj pilgrimages in the future.”

CNN —Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai has called for a change to medical protocols after the team’s striker, Barnabás Varga, sustained a serious injury during its match against Scotland on Sunday at Euro 2024. The 29-year-old’s teammates could be seen signaling for medical attention to be brought onto the pitch to help Varga. Cameras showed Szoboszlai seemingly in tears after the incident and appeared to be concerned at the speed at which the stretcher was being carried onto the pitch to help Varga. “It looked bad, it was bad, he felt bad,” Szoboszlai told reporters as he reflected on Varga’s injury.
