ATLANTA (AP) — Some Republican lawmakers continued to press Wednesday for changes to protect Georgia's voting system from security weaknesses, but a deputy to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger accused them of acting in bad faith and promoting lies that Georgia's 2020 election was stolen from Donald Trump. The dispute with some Republicans in the state Senate stems from vulnerabilities in Dominion Voting Systems equipment identified by J. Alex Halderman, an expert witness in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Georgia’s election system. However, they say it's impractical to update all 40,000 electronic voting machines and scanners statewide before the 2024 election cycle begins. Senate Ethics Committee Chairman Max Burns, a Sylvania Republican, said at the end of the hearing he wanted to see changes. Fueling interest in voting changes are Republican Party activists who say that Georgia's 16 electoral votes were stolen from Trump in 2020.

“Most of the time, I’m halfway content.”Those words are Bob Dylan’s, and they were delivered one night last week by Brooke Shields during her sold-out debut show at the Café Carlyle, the intimate Manhattan supper club where Bobby Short, Elaine Stritch and Debbie Harry have performed. It was five months after Ms. Shields had returned to the spotlight with “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields,” an acclaimed documentary that chronicled the ups and downs of a career that got its start in the 1970s, when she was a child model and actress marketed as a sex symbol. A number of celebrities came out to see her at the venue, which is blocks away from the Upper East Side apartment where she grew up. At a table close to the stage were the actors Naomi Watts, Billy Crudup and Laura Dern. Nearby sat Mariska Hargitay, whom Ms. Shields has worked with on “Law & Order: SVU.” The crowd also included two men who had done cabaret at the Carlyle: Isaac Mizrahi, who designed the loosefitting orange dress Ms. Shields was wearing, and Alan Cumming.

Last weekend on Fire Island in New York, far from the bright lights of Broadway, Patti LuPone performed at the Ice Palace nightclub for some of her most adoring fans. These die-hards, sometimes called LuPonettes, included a man who had seen Ms. LuPone in the 1979 production of “Evita” and another who had a caricature of her tattooed on his back. “I first fell in love with Patti when I saw the ‘Evita’ commercial,” he said. In addition to its Friday night Underwear Party, its stage has hosted Chita Rivera, Liza Minnelli and Alan Cumming. “Patti has played the greatest venues in the world, but for her to play here it’s about connecting with her most fervent fan base,” the club’s co-owner, Daniel Nardicio, said.

Filadendron | E+ | Getty ImagesThe overall U.S. unemployment rate declined in June, but a negative trend among Black workers may be emerging, according to the latest nonfarm payrolls report. Overall, the unemployment rate last month was 3.6%, a 0.1 percentage point decrease from May, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Friday. However, Black workers saw their unemployment rate rise to 6% in June from 5.6% in May, making it the second consecutive monthly increase. "If the employment level for Black workers has gone down pretty significantly for the last three months, then that is a red flag." Cumming attributed the increase in unemployment among Black workers to the mechanics of the economy slowing down.

A Reuters journalist explores his ancestors’ ties to slavery

It took me a few minutes of research to figure out why I was losing track of the descendants of the people George Julian enslaved. If the racial cleansing of Forsyth County was mentioned, I didn’t notice. Still hopeful that I might be able to somehow identify and locate living descendants of the people my family enslaved, I flew to Georgia last November. Her father was also a butler for a wealthy white family, her mother a cook. In 1860, Osby’s ancestors were enslaved and working the fields of Forsyth County.

Prince Harry’s expected testimony on Tuesday in a phone-hacking case will be the first time in over 130 years that a prominent member of Britain’s royal family is cross-examined in court. The last time it happened was in 1891, and it didn’t go well for the royal family. It was unusual then, too, for such a prominent member of the royal family — the future king, no less — to appear in court. Richard Fitzwilliams, a royal commentator, said: “You can see from reading this why it was subsequently decided that this is not something the royal family want. Furthermore, while Harry is a high-profile member of the royal family, he is no longer a working royal.

A pizza company is letting customers buy now and pay after they're dead. Hell Pizza says the AfterLife Pay system will initially run as a trial for 666 people. A New Zealand pizza company has unveiled a new "buy now, pay later" system that lets customers wait to pay for their order until after they're dead. Hell Pizza CEO Benn Cumming told Newshub the "light-hearted" marketing stunt was inspired by current buy now, pay later programs affecting Kiwis.

Many other hospitals were also reported to have come under attack on Monday, the third day of fighting in Sudan. Russia has also been trying to make inroads in Sudan, and members of the Kremlin-affiliated Wagner private military company are posted there. Leaders from around the world called for a cease-fire, but it was not clear who, if anyone, was in control of Sudan, Africa’s third-largest country, by area. “Everyone is afraid,” said Ahmed Abuhurira, a 28-year-old mechanical engineer who went out to try to charge his cellphone. “The humanitarian situation in Sudan was already precarious and is now catastrophic,” he said.
Private equity’s recent challenges in fundraising, deal making and exits don’t dim the long-term outlook for the asset class, a new report from Bain & Co. says. While interest rates have risen and many investors are worried about the future, a long-expected recession hasn’t arrived, and many private-equity deal makers are ready to get back to work, said Hugh MacArthur, chairman of private equity for the Boston-based consulting firm. “Fundamentally, nothing is broken in the global economy,” he said.

Democrats secured effective control of the Senate in the Nov. 8 general election, while Republicans won the U.S. House of Representatives. The early vote is expected to have leaned Democratic, political experts from both parties say, meaning the Walker campaign goes into Tuesday with a sizeable deficit. Public pensions in the U.S. have mostly shied away from digital assets, a sector whose Wild West ethos and extreme volatility are widely seen as bad fits for institutional investors that aim to protect retiree savings. Yet many pensions have millions of dollars in exposure to the cryptocurrency asset class through investments in venture-capital funds that backed crypto companies.

A highly anticipated corporate earnings season has just kicked off, and Morgan Stanley has highlighted which stocks to buy — or avoid. Given this backdrop, Morgan Stanley analysts looked for stocks that could experience big swings based on near-term catalysts, some positive and others negative. Morgan Stanley sees upside for Arcutis Biotherapeutics if the biotech company's two phase-two studies for its drug Zoryve are successful. "We would expect significant investor focus on these data sets, and our statistical analysis suggests a high probability-of-success (POS) for both trials," wrote Morgan Stanley analyst Vikram Purohit. Meanwhile, Logitech is one of the stocks Morgan Stanley expects to decline due to negative earnings.
‘The one thing that writing this book has taken from me is my ability to enjoy reading other books,’ says Kelly Ripa. When Kelly Ripa embarked on her first book in 2020, she wasn’t worried at all. “I think that because I enjoy doing something, because I enjoy reading, I can write a book.”But once she got started, that confidence began to dwindle. Fortunately, she had a Rolodex full of published-author friends to call on for motivation and advice. When deadline anxiety crept up on her, actor Alan Cumming “told me that he was four years past his deadline,” Ripa says.
Marjorie Taylor Greene has promoted conspiracy theories about school shootings. She defends her stance by referring to a 1990 hostage situation at her own high school. In her 2020 call with Tallant, Greene "was trying to say that we should have all had guns," Tallant told CNHI.
