DETROIT – General Motors union workers ratified a record deal with the United Auto Workers after a contentious final few days of voting, according to results posted Thursday morning by the union. Ratification of the deal came under doubt Wednesday morning, after seven of GM's 11 U.S. assembly plants rejected the pact. But a swing in voting results in favor of the deal, specifically at a SUV plant in Texas, gave the agreement a much needed lifeline. According to the UAW's vote tracker, the deal was supported by roughly 54% of the more than 34,700 autoworkers at GM who voted. Results are still outstanding at two smaller GM facilities representing about 1,400 hourly workers, but wouldn't be enough to offset the roughly 2,500-vote margin.

The caller was UBS (UBS) chairman Colm Kelleher. “I was definitely not expecting the phone call,” Ermotti told CNN on the sidelines of a conference in Geneva last month. UBS paid 60% less than the beaten-down value of Credit Suisse shares just before its last-ditch rescue over a weekend. Even if Credit Suisse had none of that painful baggage, the sheer size of the two banks makes the merger an enormous undertaking. “The fact that UBS was asked to be part of the solution (to Credit Suisse), that was the ultimate success,” Ermotti told CNN.

Amazon's multiyear commitment to use Microsoft 365 includes more than 1.5 million license seats across different tiers of Microsoft's cloud-based productivity suite, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal. The pact includes around 550,000 seats of Microsoft's M365 E5 product for corporate workers and 1 million seats of M365 F5 for frontline staff such as fulfillment center employees, the person said. A person familiar with Amazon's operations said the company stayed off of the cloud version of Microsoft's 365 products because they didn't previously want to save anything on a competitor's cloud. F5 is an upgraded version of Microsoft's M365 product for frontline workers. M365 F5 starts at $8 per user per month, which would be $480 million for all 1 million licenses over 5 years.

The United Auto Workers union said it reached a new tentative deal with Ford that could bring an end to a six-week strike at one automaker while negotiations continue at General Motors and Chrysler-parent Stellantis. Photo: Michael Swensen/Getty ImagesFord Motor lost about $37,000 on each electric vehicle it sold last quarter. It doesn’t help that the company’s gas-engine business also costs more than it should—a difference from crosstown rival General Motors that investors are ignoring at their peril. The third-quarter results Ford reported after hours on Thursday weren’t great, with an adjusted operating profit of $2.2 billion. By way of comparison, GM’s operating profit in the third quarter was $3.6 billion.

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis are meeting with United Auto Workers bargainers Thursday to see if they can reach a contract agreement that mirrors a deal signed with crosstown rival Ford. Nearly 17,000 striking workers at Ford left the picket lines when the agreement was announced Wednesday night and will return to work shortly. About 57,000 Ford workers still have to vote on the tentative pact. It wasn't clear what Ford agreed to in terms of battery factories. Ford had announced plans to build two battery factories in Kentucky, one in Tennessee and another in Michigan, but the Michigan plant is now on hold.

DETROIT – The United Auto Workers union and Ford Motor have agreed in principle to the terms of a tentative agreement that would end a nearly six-week strike at the automaker, sources with knowledge of the discussions confirmed Wednesday to CNBC. Any deal would still need to be ratified by a simple majority of Ford's 57,000 union-represented workers. The automaker and the union participated in intense bargaining Tuesday and Wednesday in an attempt to finalize a record deal, according to the sources. However, a tentative agreement with Ford would likely be used as a template to negotiate with Stellantis and GM. The union expanded strikes against both of those automakers at major plants this week.

DETROIT (AP) — Ford Motor Co. Executive Chairman Bill Ford called on autoworkers to come together to end a monthlong strike that he says could cost the company the ability to invest in the future. Many jobs will be lost,” said the great grandson of company founder Henry Ford. Ford has 57,000 UAW workers compared with 46,000 at GM and 43,000 at Stellantis. Ford said the strike at the Kentucky plant is harming tens of thousands of Americans who work for parts suppliers and Ford dealers. Fain said on Wednesday that Ford told UAW bargainers for nearly two weeks that it would make another counteroffer on economic issues.

While Biden and most congressional leaders still support aid to Ukraine, and Biden's Democrats control the Senate, Zelenskiy faces a tougher crowd than when he visited Washington nine months ago. Zelenskiy told Senators that military aid was crucial to Ukraine's war effort, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in the Senate chamber after the briefing, which took place behind closed doors. "If we don't get the aid, we will lose the war," Schumer quoted Zelenskiy as saying. Biden will announce a new $325 million military aid package for Ukraine, which is expected to include the second tranche of cluster munitions fired by a 155 millimeter Howitzer cannon. Lana Payne speaks to delegates after being elected as president of UNIFOR, Canada's largest private sector union, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Aug. 10, 2022. The Canadian tentative agreement was reached on day five of the United Auto Workers union initiating targeted strikes against Ford and its crosstown rivals General Motors and Chrysler-parent Stellantis . DETROIT – Ford Motor avoided having to face labor strikes on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border Tuesday night, as the automaker and Canadian union Unifor announced a tentative deal covering 5,600 autoworkers in the country's Ontario providence. Unifor, which represents 18,000 Canadian workers at the Detroit automakers, took a more traditional approach to its negotiations than its U.S. counterpart did. The Canadian union picked Ford as its "target" company instead of following the UAW's new strategy of bargaining with all three automakers.

A Unifor strike would disrupt Ford's Oakville Assembly Plant that produces the Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus crossovers. F-Series, Mustang could be disruptedIf a prolonged Canadian strike occurs, the work stoppage could eventually impact U.S. production of the vehicles. Gasoline V8 models make up about 50% of Mustang and 20% of F-150 models sold in the U.S. Large F-Series trucks exclusively have V8 engines. But a majority of those vehicles sold have diesel V8 engines rather than gasoline, according to the company. The United Auto Workers labor union launched targeted strikes against the three Detroit automakers early Friday morning. It's the first time in history that the UAW has struck all three of the Detroit automakers at once. GM's Cadillac and Chevrolet brands had just 46 days' and 51 days' worth of vehicles, respectively; the Ford brand had 77 days' worth. Historically, the Detroit automakers have tended to have somewhat larger supplies on hand because their full-size pickups are offered in many different configurations. In contrast to the strike against Stellantis, the UAW's strike against Ford could be relatively brief.
