Opening a half-baked, highly partisan investigation into President Biden was a cheap stunt. But I’d argue that as House Republicans move forward with a floor vote to impeach Alejandro Mayorkas, the homeland security secretary, they are poised to drag the chamber down an even more tortured — and potentially damaging — path. Yes, the Biden impeachment folly is built on a steaming pile of unsubstantiated charges and fever dreams sprung from the House’s conspiracy caucus. House Republicans have yet to produce evidence that Mr. Biden did anything of the sort. But if ever they do, it will be wild times for sure!

Back in 2012, long before Nikki Haley hit the presidential campaign trail — and years before Hillary Clinton faced off against Donald Trump — Ms. Haley, then the governor of South Carolina, told this newspaper, “The reason I actually ran for office is because of Hillary Clinton.”“Everybody was telling me why I shouldn’t run,” she elaborated. “I was too young, I had small children, I should start at the school board level. At every stop, Haley supporters expressed their longing for a younger, fresher face in the White House. He touted his own leadership and, perhaps with an eye toward running again in 2028, endorsed the Republican kingmaker, Donald Trump. But watching DeSantis’s now-famous awkward smile and listening to his unnatural cadence, it was hard not to think: Yeah. Mr. DeSantis is a successful governor of a major state and a smart guy with a picture-perfect family. At an even more basic level, Mr. Trump doesn’t have to promise positive change so much as the chance to stiff-arm the current leadership. Some protest voters will turn out to support anyone running against the object of their distaste. This is what plenty of people did with Mr. Trump in 2016 to express their lack of love for Hillary Clinton. People are wired to romanticize the way things used to be and, by extension, the leaders at the time. On Oct. 2, Mr. Gaetz filed the motion to vacate the speaker’s chair against Mr. McCarthy, just two days after Mr. McCarthy worked with Democrats to pass a stopgap bill to keep the government running through mid-November. A relatively moderate Republican representing a relatively moderate district in South Carolina, she was the striking outlier among the anti-McCarthy eight. She says Kev broke his word. “I made deals with Kevin McCarthy, with the speaker, that he has not kept to help women in this country. And we have done nothing for them,” she told reporters after the vote.

Mr. Jordan clearly fancies himself more of a Trumpian strongman. And not to be indelicate, but do Republicans really want people thinking all that hard about Mr. Jordan’s wrestling baggage? Mr. Jordan attempted a different route to the top. But his leverage and influence, like so many hard-liners’, largely derive from being a creature of Mr. Trump. Mr. Jordan may consider himself a powerful figure.
