From the outside, the prison complex in Florence, Colo., is a forbidding citadel of steel, concrete and coiled barbed wire, housing some of the most notorious inmates in federal custody. To hundreds of its employees, it is a stressful, isolated, short-staffed workplace. Like many other federal prisons, Florence is undergoing a staffing crisis, with head counts on some guard shifts so low that teachers, case managers, counselors, facilities workers and even secretaries at the complex have been enlisted to serve as corrections officers, despite having only basic security training. “It creates a safety issue: If you aren’t savvy with the housing unit, or the position you’re working, you are not going to spot a problem before it starts. Nowhere has that been more of a problem than at the chronically troubled Bureau of Prisons, with about 160,000 inmates at 122 prisons and camps — employing a work force of about 34,000 people who often earn less than state and county corrections workers.

CNN —A transgender woman has sued Maryland’s corrections department in federal court, alleging she was improperly housed with male inmates while jailed for three months in 2021 and 2022 – and was sexually assaulted and denied hormone treatment during that time. “I’m filing this lawsuit today because I don’t want what happened to me to happen to any other trans woman in the state of Maryland,” Gilliam said in a news conference Wednesday. She received hormone treatments for her gender dysphoria for 18 years before she was jailed, the suit says. After the assault, the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services took no action, the lawsuit alleges. It also required her to sign a waiver saying she wouldn’t hold the public safety department liable if anything happened to her in the men’s prison, it says.

He was also tied violence in Alameda County. Tuesday’s fourth case, an April 2021 slaying that brings the total to seven killings, was previously unreported. Brownlee was arrested in October when he “was out hunting” for another possible victim in Stockton, police said at the time. Influencer Nikita Dragun was released from jail in Miami on Wednesday, according to her representative and Miami-Dade County criminal justice records. Dragun, 26, was arrested Monday at a hotel and charged with felony assault of a police officer. Dragun, who is transgender, is well-known online for content about her transition, beauty and style. While in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami, Dragun’s representative said she was placed in a men’s unit. Dragun was released on recognizance, Miami-Dade County’s records said, meaning she did not have to post bail.

The Louisville, Ky., corrections department was recommended earlier this year to reduce its use of isolation cells to help prevent inmate suicides. Suicides in prisons and jails across the U.S. have risen sharply over the past two years, data collected by The Wall Street Journal show, a trend that officials and inmate advocates say is driven in part by the increased isolation of inmates during the pandemic, more abuse of drugs including fentanyl and staff shortages. In the Texas prison system last year, 61 inmates took their own lives, the most in two decades. In Louisiana, 13 state prison inmates died by suicide from January 2021 through the beginning of October, more than triple the number during the prior three years combined. Kentucky prisons have seen six suicides so far in 2022, compared with one last year.

Las Vegas police have apprehended a man who escaped prison earlier this week while serving a life sentence for a deadly 2007 explosion outside a Las Vegas Strip resort. Duarte-Herrera escaped from the Southern Desert Correctional Center in Indian Springs and was discovered missing during the 7 a.m. count Tuesday, according to the Nevada Corrections Department. They had warned anyone who spotted him not to approach the escaped inmate and to call 911 immediately. He said he had ordered the Corrections Department to launch a thorough investigation into what happened. Rueda-Denvers, 47, remains behind bars at a separate state prison, according to Corrections Department records.
