BRUSSELS (AP) — Lawmakers on the European Parliament’s environment committee on Wednesday backed a proposal to relax rules on genetically modified plants produced using so-called new genomic techniques, prompting strong criticism from environmental groups. But lawmakers agreed Wednesday to create two different categories and two sets of rules for genetically modified plants produced using NGTs. Those considered equivalent to traditional crops would be exempt from GMO legislation, but other NGT plants would have to follow current requirements. The committee agreed that all NGT plants should remain prohibited in organic production. It aims to ensure that what is developed does not breach EU citizens’ rights to health and environmental protection.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — New Speaker Mike Johnson finds himself leading House Republicans with a majority in name only. Approaching his first 100 days on the job, Johnson faces daunting choices ahead. “The House Republicans have the second-smallest majority in history," he said. Johnson and Trump talk often, but some of Trump’s strongest allies in the House are those conservatives pushing the speaker rightward and denying him a governing majority. “Speaker Johnson is in a 24-hour survival mode," said Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, a key Democratic negotiator on the border package.

It's hard for people to understand that I have siblings the same age as my kids. AdvertisementI still remember how my mom and I tried to corral the kids while eating burgers at the local restaurant years ago. People often try to correct me, thinking they might be my siblings' kids, my nieces and nephews. When they go to school and have a hard day, there are people there who know and love them. When I have a hard day, my mom is in the midst of the same stage of parenting — with a bit more wisdom on her side!

For the second year in a row, the United Nations climate summit known as COP will take place in a petrostate. COP29 will be in Baku, Azerbaijan, and overseen by Mukhtar Babayev, who worked for more than two decades at Socar, Azerbaijan’s state-owned oil company. There’s a precedent: Last year’s climate summit was controversially hosted by the United Arab Emirates and led by Sultan Al Jaber, who also runs the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. It remains to be seen whether Babayev, a former low-ranking executive who is now Azerbaijan’s environment minister, will have the same impact. But there is also a poignant historical resonance to COP29: By some measures, Azerbaijan is where the modern oil industry began.

Business Insider spoke with two former Home Depot employees, Janet Federico and Matthew De Fiebre, about things they wish customers would stop doing in the big-box store. De Fiebre, who worked as a garden and order-fulfillment associate in 2019 and 2020, said showing employees grace goes a long way. There are lots of different departments in each Home Depot store. "I can't eyeball measurements from a photo, and holding up your hands and saying, 'about this wide' is not helpful," Federico told BI.

Imagine a better climate pact than COP

It’s possible to imagine an alternative, better way to fight climate change. The snag is that China or the United States – which were responsible for 25% and 11% of greenhouse gases, respectively, in 2021 – would have to take the lead. All countries agreed to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial times and to aim for 1.5 degrees. That’s the thinking behind the Just Energy Transition Partnerships that the United States and its allies have cut with Indonesia, Vietnam and South Africa. For example, Donald Trump, who as president pulled the United States out of the Paris Agreement, may return to the White House after next year’s elections.

But Greene said she had a tougher time connecting with Speaker Mike Johnson, who doesn’t have a strong relationship with the congresswoman. “I haven’t heard much from him,” Greene told CNN earlier this week. Greene said Johnson heard her out and gave her assurances that her impeachment articles would move through committee and on to the floor. Taking a page from his predecessor’s playbook, Johnson has tried to dole out commitments and face-time to some of his potential critics. GOP Rep. Bob Good of Virginia said the Freedom Caucus made clear to the speaker on Thursday what their expectations are.

The kiosks are usually a help for both shoppers and retailers, but there's much room for improvement. AdvertisementSince the introduction of self-checkout more than 30 years ago, the technology has become ubiquitous in stores across the US and around the world. Meanwhile, those anti-shoplifting measures are frustrating some customers who say they are fed up with systems flagging them as potential criminals. Q: What’s the strangest thing a seller has ever left behind after closing? In 2014, I was working with some buyers who wanted to live on a working farmoff the grid. The sellers had 16 horses, 25 chickens, threegoats, a huge potbellied pig and a Russian boar named Kevin. Aswe got closer to closing, the sellers were panicking because Kevin had escapedhis pen and was running loose on the property. We didn’t learn it wasn’t real until I called the sellers to tell them they left something behind.

It's a disruption that Johnson — just two weeks into his job running the House — has said he wants to avoid. “We're running up against the clock on Nov. 17, and we're obviously aware of that,” Johnson said this week, referring to the date that government funding expires. Democrats have made it clear they will not support any funding packages that include policy wins for conservatives. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, who the Democratic leader in the House, said they would not “pay a single, right-wing ransom demand” as part of a funding resolution. Democratic lawmakers are also eager to play up the House Republican divisions and to pin any blame for a shutdown squarely on the new speaker and his GOP colleagues.

They found themselves back in the same predicament they confronted in September, when Congress narrowly avoided a shutdown just hours before the deadline. With that temporary funding measure set to expire in days, Mr. Johnson appears set on avoiding a repeat of the circumstances that doomed his predecessor. That means he will need to corral nearly all Republicans to pass a government funding measure, a considerable feat given his party’s resistance to federal spending. “We certainly want to avoid a government shutdown,” Mr. Johnson said. At a closed-door meeting underneath the Capitol on Tuesday morning, Mr. Johnson presented a menu of spending strategies to his conference.

WASHINGTON (AP) — New House Speaker Mike Johnson inherits many of the same problems that bedeviled Republican leaders with far more experience. But can he unite House Republicans where others failed? Trump, who is running for a second White House term, enthusiastically backed Johnson and said he will be “a fantastic speaker." The House Republican Conference is deeply divided on those issues. The intractability of many House Republicans forced McCarthy to turn to Democrats for help in keeping the government running.

Now it falls to Mr. Johnson, a fourth-term congressman who has never served in a top leadership position before, to try to keep his anti-spending party united and the government open — all in a matter of weeks. The previous speaker, Kevin McCarthy, found it impossible to corral recalcitrant Republicans to pass legislation to keep federal funding flowing and prevent a politically and economically damaging shutdown. Mr. Johnson was among a majority of Republicans who opposed that stopgap spending bill. In the days leading up to the government shutdown deadline in September, Mr. McCarthy put forward a stopgap measure that severely slashed spending. Twenty-one conservative lawmakers opposed it, tanking the bill and declaring that they would not vote for a temporary funding measure under any circumstances.

Yorio said he sees annual inflation stabilizing at around 4.5% toward the end of the year. However, Bank of Mexico board member Jonathan Heath cautioned that the slowing pace of the inflation rate in recent months should not prompt premature celebration, local media outlet El Financiero reported on Wednesday. We still see a long battle ahead and this inflation phenomenon has really been much more complex than we would have imagined," said Heath. His comments come as the central bank has kept its benchmark interest rate at 11.25% since March, following a nearly two-year rate-hike cycle. CNN —Conservative Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio is bringing the House back to the floor Tuesday to vote on whether he will succeed ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy and finally end the chamber’s prolonged paralysis amid deep GOP divisions. But it’s not clear whether Jordan can be the one who unifies the fractured House Republican conference, with some lawmakers still opposed. Jordan can now only lose three votes, instead of four, but this is a temporary drop until the Florida congressman returns. “We need to get a speaker tomorrow,” Jordan said Monday after leaving a closed-door GOP conference meeting.
