We bonded over the fact that we both really, really hated our job. Our job was in the home loans team and we had the same manager. We hated it because we were expected to sell a product — home loans — to customers who couldn't necessarily afford it. Colleagues started making jokes that maybe something was going on between us. As we worked for a big bank, I at least knew Tim had cleared a police check, extensive background checks, and a credit check.

Three of these towns — Katayamazu Onsen, Yamashiro Onsen and Yamanaka Onsen — are famous for their onsen, or hot springs. Japanese tourists still flock to Kaga’s onsen towns every fall, when the leaves turn fiery and snow crab is in season. But few foreigners find their way here, in part because the journey from Tokyo has not been easy. A new extension of the Hokuriku Shinkansen, the high-speed train that rockets passengers from Tokyo to this region, now includes a stop at Kagaonsen station. The trip takes less than three hours on a single train.

CNN: Do you think that Israel can defeat Hamas without conducting a ground invasion in Rafah? The fact is that Rafah’s where the hostages and remaining Hamas military power and leadership are believed to be, their rockets and weapons production and other capabilities, everything. CNN: Couldn’t Israel’s offensive still have the effect of creating more militants who are going to join Hamas and fight against Israel? But it’s also a very winnable war for Hamas at this point because wars are not determined just by military capability. The problem is that the international community pushed Israel into this framework of going slower, going methodically, evacuating every area beforehand.

The question for some of us is, why some people want to keep working decades beyond retirement age? CNN Opinion editor Stephanie Griffith asked seven people who are past the conventional retirement age why they are still at the job and got as many responses as there were respondents. They continue to work happily and productively, and were happy to explain to us how and why they do it. Over the years I’ve had to adapt frequently to the changing technology, which isn’t always easy for someone my age. That may be the secret of working well past the time society tells us we’re supposed to retire.

Bitcoin's halving in April could force crypto miners to sell some tokens, Kaiko Research reported. These firms haven't yet had to tap their bitcoin hoards thanks to high transaction fees, but that could change. The April halving is a pre-coded event in which the amount of bitcoin rewarded to crypto miners is slashed in half. According to Bloomberg, fees jumped amid a burst of meme-coin creation after the halving event. Miners are often known for hoarding bitcoin troves without selling, which analysts have previously pointed out as another price-boosting supply constraint.

In About-Face, Wall Street’s Big Donors Warm to Trump
  + stars: | 2024-05-15 | by ( Rob Copeland | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When President Donald J. Trump left office, some of Wall Street’s biggest names, who had taken to him during his first term in the White House, swore they were moving on from him for good. They were fatigued by his leadership style, disappointed by some of his policies and shocked by the U.S. Capitol riot. With Mr. Trump leading in the polls, big financiers on Wall Street, in Silicon Valley and elsewhere are edging into his corner, according to interviews with more than a dozen people who sought anonymity because they didn’t want their personal views to be tied to their employers. In other cases, the willingness to support a return of Mr. Trump reflects a growing dissatisfaction with what many big Wall Street donors see as the White House’s hardening stance against Israel in its war on Gaza. A prominent example of the about-face is Kenneth Griffin, a hedge fund magnate and political megadonor who publicly derided Mr. Trump as a “three-time loser” less than two years ago.

TIAA has launched a new metric to show why the 4% rule combined with an annuity can provide a higher amount of income than just using the 4% rule alone. For example, if a retiree has $1 million in total savings, the 4% rule would provide them with $40,000 in their first year of retirement. That is based on the combined income of the annuity and a 4% withdrawal on the remaining $666,667 portfolio. The first-year withdrawal of the annuity strategy — $52,667 versus $40,000 — is 32% higher and $1,056 more per month than just using the 4% rule. When withdrawal rates may be higherThe 4% rule has its blind spots when applied to today's retirees, according to recent research from Blanchett.

What Is Italy’s Most Prized Stuffed Pasta?

T’s May 19 Travel issue is dedicated to pasta in Italy, diving deep into the culinary traditions, regional variations and complicated history of the country’s national symbol. Click here for a field guide to stuffed pasta, as an accompaniment to this article. FOR MUCH OF Italy’s history, ravioli was a luxury reserved for banquet tables or feast days. All pasta was a rarefied food in the Middle Ages, but few forms captured the popular imagination as completely as stuffed pasta, considered the noblest of the species. The “Encyclopedia of Pasta” (2009), the Italian food historian Oretta Zanini De Vita’s decades-long effort to catalog Italy’s most popular food, identifies more than 80 types of pasta ripiena (“stuffed pasta”), allowing for countless variations.

Unlike traditional banks, nonbank mortgage companies like Rocket Mortgage are heavily exposed to swings in the mortgage market, depend on funding that can dry up during times of stress and don’t have stable deposits to rely on as a safety net. Despite the wonky term, nonbank mortgage companies have become vital players that make most home mortgages in the United States today. As of 2022, nonbank mortgage companies originated about two-thirds of US mortgages and owned the servicing rights on 54% of mortgage balances, according to FSOC. “Nonbank mortgage firms are thinly capitalized, which makes them vulnerable to failure if they lose financing or mortgage defaults spike,” said McCoy, a former mortgage regulator. “Starting in early 2007, we saw a tsunami of nonbank mortgage firms fail precisely for these reasons.”

The actor Steve Buscemi was punched in the face in a random attack in Manhattan last week, his publicist said on Sunday. Mr. Buscemi, 66, was walking near the corner of Third Avenue and East 27th Street in the Kips Bay neighborhood on Wednesday when the assailant — a stranger — approached and punched him in the face around 11:48 a.m., according to information released by the Police Department last week. The police did not identify Mr. Buscemi as the victim, but his publicist confirmed on Sunday that he was the man who had been attacked. Mr. Buscemi was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was treated for bruising, swelling and bleeding in his left eye, the police said.

It seemed that the half would end goalless, that is until Toone created a little magic in its final moments. Rachel Williams, on the ground, was mobbed by her teammates after scoring United's second goal. García still had time for a second goal, rifling the ball into the net after Lisa Naalsund had controlled Melvine Malard’s chip into the box, and added some extra gloss to the scoreline.
