The latest research on the prevalence of aspirin use to prevent cardiovascular disease suggests that in 2021, nearly a third of adults 60 or older without cardiovascular disease were still using aspirin. Among adults 60 or older, nearly 30% reported taking aspirin to prevent cardiovascular disease, and around 5% of all adults 60 or older reported using aspirin without medical advice. Among those regularly taking aspirin, 89% reported taking a low-dose aspirin, according to the survey, while 11% indicated they take regular strength aspirin, which makes their risk of excessive bleeding even higher. The other alarming aspect is that many individuals are taking aspirin without the guidance of a healthcare provider,” Montgomery said. Regardless, any patient taking aspirin regularly should discuss that behavior with their physician, Weintraub said.

CNN —England secured top spot in Group C with a goalless draw against Slovenia on Tuesday, but another underwhelming performance throws up more questions about the Three Lions’ status as one of the Euro 2024 favorites. The team created few real chances of note and were again met by boos at full-time from traveling England fans. England, meanwhile, had been heavily criticized for two poor performances to open Euro 2024: a narrow 1-0 win over Serbia and a 1-1 draw with Denmark. The street turmoil that swept Kenya’s capital on Tuesday represented a blow to the Biden administration’s tight embrace of President William Ruto, a strong U.S. ally on a continent where American influence is rapidly waning. Just a day earlier, President Biden had formally named Kenya a major non-NATO ally, and Mr. Ruto had seen off a first group of 400 Kenyan police officers headed to Haiti on a contentious security mission that is largely financed by the United States. At the White House, the Kenyan leader was feted with a state dinner that included celebrity guests and former President Barack Obama, whose father was Kenyan. For Mr. Ruto, the state visit was the high point of a globe-trotting presidency. He has visited dozens of countries since being declared the winner of a fiercely contested presidential election in August 2022.

The housing market is unlikely to recover for several years and affordability won't get any better unless a recession hits, according to Bank of America economists. "The US housing market is stuck, and we are not convinced it will become unstuck anytime soon," Bank of America economist Michael Gapen and others said in a Monday note. In some respects, the housing market is a victim of its own success: Buyers swarmed in after Covid hit, taking advantage of mortgage rates around 3% and even less. Bank of America does expect some moderation in regard to prices, but again not for a few years. As things stand, the NAR's housing affordability index , after rising earlier this year, tumbled in May to its lowest level since November 2023.

AdvertisementThe best days and weeks of the year for the stock market are around the corner. If history is a guide, that suggests the S&P 500 could surge 4% next month to record highs, according to Goldman Sachs. Goldman SachsWhat's more, recent market trends show that July as a whole has been incredibly bullish for the stock market. If similar seasonal trends play out this year, a near-4% gain would catapult the S&P 500 to a new record at 5,665 based on current levels. As to what could drive more bullish returns over the coming weeks, Rubner highlighted that a record cash pile of more than $7 trillion sitting in money market funds could soon flood the market.

A New York judge on Tuesday lifted parts of a gag order imposed on former President Donald Trump in his criminal hush money case, but kept some restrictions in place until Trump is sentenced. While he lifted that piece of the gag order, the judge ruled that a prohibition on disclosing juror information will remain in effect until further notice. Trump raged against the gag order when it was first imposed on March 26, about three weeks before the trial began. Trump violated the gag order 10 times during the historic trial. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung in a statement Tuesday criticized Merchan for declining to lift the entire gag order.

Hong Kong CNN —Chinese Premier Li Qiang has warned against a “vicious cycle” of economic decoupling from the West, as Beijing struggles to contain rising global pushback over soaring electric vehicle (EV) exports. This will “drag countries … into a vicious cycle of scrambling for a cake that becomes smaller and smaller,” Li added. Last month, the Biden administration quadrupled tariffs on EV imports from China, from 25% to 100%, aiming to protect American jobs and manufacturing. Chinese EV sales to the United States are tiny.

Washington CNN —Hunter Biden’s Washington, DC, law license has been suspended, according to a newly released order from a local court that pointed to his recent conviction on three gun crimes. The order was issued by Chief Judge Anna Elizabeth Blackburne-Rigsby of the DC Court of Appeals, which is the highest appellate court in DC and oversees the DC Bar. It is typical for bars in other states to reciprocate law license suspension or disbarment orders, meaning Biden’s license is also likely to soon be suspended in any other state where he is licensed. Biden has asked for a new trial in the gun case. During closing arguments in Biden’s gun trial, one of the prosecutors described him as a “Yale-educated defendant,” referring to the school where he earned his law degree.

Prosecutors, with several never-before-seen images and a 30-page filing, detailed the search process and ridiculed Trump’s legal arguments. A photo of a box taken by a filter agent during the August 2022 search of Mar-a-Lago. The prosecutors highlighted how investigators found boxes with their contents spilled on the floor, which they also illustrated with photos taken by investigators and by one of Trump’s co-defendants. “Against this backdrop of the haphazard manner in which Trump chose to maintain his boxes” Trump argues that the precise order of the contents “was critical to his defense,” prosecutors said, ridiculing the argument. To bolster their arguments, the prosecutors attached several new photos of the boxes, some of which were taken during the search.

A 2-year-old startup founded by Harvard dropouts has just raised $120 million in venture funding to try and build a competitive chip and take on Nvidia in artificial intelligence. Co-founder and CEO Gavin Uberti said that as AI develops, most of the technology's power-hungry computing requirements will be filled by customized, hard-wired chips called ASICs. "We're making the biggest bet in AI," Uberti said in an interview. Other chip startups taking on Nvidia include Cerebras Systems, which is building a physically larger AI chip, and Tenstorrent, which is using a trendy technology called RISC-V to build AI chips. Venture capitalists invested $6 billion in AI semiconductor companies in 2023, up slightly from $5.7 billion in 2022, according to data from PitchBook.

Soon, he could well become prime minister if RN wins an absolute majority in the forthcoming parliamentary elections — and he's only 28. Bardella's rise from party spokesman in 2017 to party president over the course of five years is somewhat remarkable for a man who is only 28. Two years later, he became a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) before being made party president in 2022. His slang has also offered me an accidental and useful portrait of how he and his generation see the world. The primary value of slang has been to create linguistic shibboleths, a way to differentiate yourself quickly from other people. My son’s generation has a vastly superior approach to slang. They’ve devised a language that responds to the new and distinct reality they face. My son’s slang reflects that: It’s a distinct language created for a society that’s characterized, online and off, by collapsing institutions, erosions in trust and a loss of faith in a shared sense of meaning.
