Several of the justices’ spouses, including Jane Roberts, wife of the chief justice, sat in a special guest session. Roberts’ criticism of the Colorado Supreme Court decision barring Trump was echoed by his colleagues, even as they varied in their constitutional grounds. Just as Roberts can set the tone for oral arguments, the chief justice presides over their private votes on cases. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and his colleagues seemed ready on Thursday to start to rebuild the court’s reputation by presenting themselves as unified and apolitical. He has had a bumpy ride of late, what with the leak of the decision overturning Roe v. Wade, an inconclusive investigation into that breach, a lonely concurrence in the decision itself and ethics scandals followed by a toothless code meant to address them. All of this has contributed to dips in the Supreme Court’s approval ratings, as large segments of the public have increasingly viewed it as swayed by politics rather than committed to neutral principles and the rule of law. Judging by the justices’ questions in arguments on Thursday over former President Donald J. Trump’s eligibility to hold office again, they will rule that Mr. Trump can remain on the primary ballot in Colorado and on other ballots around the nation — and by a lopsided, if not unanimous, vote.

If the Supreme Court ultimately rules against Trump it would almost certainly end his campaign for another term. But because the court expedited the earlier stages of the Trump ballot case, it is likely the court will want to move quickly to decide the case, potentially within a matter of weeks. If Trump is removed from the ballot in Colorado, Roberts predicted that states would eventually attempt to knock other candidates out of future elections. House Republicans were thrown for a loop on Tuesday when a vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of the southern border failed after four Republicans voted against it. Research suggests that higher education correlates with higher earnings. In four states, more than 60% of working age people had some form of post-high school education – exceeding the foundation’s broader goal. Nevada landed at the very bottom of the list, with an educational attainment rate of 42.7%. In the most recent version of the rankings, Massachusetts, Colorado and Vermont were ranked the highest for educational attainment. Post-high school educational attainment percentages for Black, Hispanic, Latino and Native American adults were all far below the national average, according to the report.

CHICAGO (AP) — Illinois' election board on Tuesday is scheduled to consider whether to keep Donald Trump on the state’s primary ballot after a recommendation that he be removed over the Constitution's insurrection provision. That state's highest court found the 14th amendment barred Trump from the ballot over his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. The push has notched successes in Colorado and in Maine, where the Democratic secretary of state also recommended removing Trump from the ballot. The eight-member Illinois election board is split evenly between Democrats and Republicans. If the vote is tied 4-4, the effort fails and Trump’s name would remain on the ballot.

The Illinois State Board of Elections rejected a complaint on Tuesday that sought to disqualify former President Donald J. Trump from the state’s primary ballot. The appointed eight-member board determined unanimously that it did not have the authority to decide whether Mr. Trump had engaged in insurrection, the basis for the complaint. The board had appointed a former Republican judge, Clark Erickson, to hear arguments in the case. In an opinion made public over the weekend, Mr. Erickson said that he believed Mr. Trump had engaged in insurrection by attempting to remain in office after losing the 2020 election. But Mr. Erickson said he did not believe that the board had the authority to disqualify Mr. Trump on those grounds, and that the question should instead be left to the courts.

Previously, Biden said Trump supported an insurrection on January 6, 2021, but that it was up to the court system to decide whether that should disqualify him from running for president. The question of whether Trump should be on the ballot has been posed to state court and election officials across the country. Colorado and Maine have removed Trump from their 2024 presidential ballots, citing Trump’s activities surrounding January 6, though those decisions have been paused pending the outcome of Trump’s appeal of the Colorado case to the US Supreme Court, which is scheduled to hear oral arguments next week. The provision is vague and doesn’t say how such bans should be enforced, and legal experts expect the US Supreme Court will decide the issue for the country. In December, following the ruling by Colorado’s Supreme Court, Biden said it was “self-evident” that Trump is an insurrectionist but deferred to courts about whether the 14th Amendment was an appropriate remedy.
