Seemingly picayune details — like my dad’s extra pickles — are extremely effective in evoking the flesh-and-blood person who has died. Finally, send your card by snail mail, not by email or text: The recipients have more control over its receipt that way. Image Credit... Miguel PorlanFriends Who Interpret ‘My Treat!’ as a TrickI had lunch with a group of friends and paid the bill. It’s common in our friend group of recent college grads for the person who pays to send a photo of the receipt to the others, and then everyone Venmos their share. Economists have a term for the gap that exists between the incomes of college graduates and high school graduates: the college wage premium. When employers want more college graduates, the premium goes up; when there is a surplus of college grads, the premium goes down. In theory, today’s sky-high college wage premium should mean a surge of young people onto college campuses, not the opposite. But as a measure of the true value of higher education, the college wage premium has one important limitation. Unlike the college wage premium, the college wealth premium looks at all your assets and all your debts: what you’ve got in the bank, whether you own a house, your student-loan balance.

Many student loan borrowers will resume making payments on their debt this fall, and some may get an extra boost from their employer. The share of entry-level jobs that mention student loan repayment programs has more than doubled since 2019, according to data from Handshake, the career platform for college students and recent grads. As of June, 3% of jobs on Handshake include a student debt repayment benefit, compared with 1.2% of job listings mentioning such benefits in June 2019. "Graduates in the health-care and medical field are known for carrying notable amounts of student loan debt," Williams tells CNBC Make It. "When paired with a high demand for frontline health-care workers and practitioners, these factors make student loan repayment options a competitive benefit."

The higher wage expectations are a reflection of this current moment in the economy and the labor market, said Julia Pollak, chief economist for online job marketplace ZipRecruiter. “It largely explains what we’ve been seeing during this summer of strikes and unions pushing for higher wages; and, of course, wages follow inflation, and part of the reason that workers are expecting higher wages is because prices have risen 17.5% since the pandemic,” she said. Men and college grads demand moreWhile reservation wages rose for workers across the board, some groups’ demands are significantly higher than others: For college graduates and men, the wage floors were $98,644 and $91,048, respectively. Women’s reservation wages set a record as well, but at $66,068 — $12,500 below the average and nearly $25,000 below men’s expectations. “Especially in male-dominated industries, women may just not know what the going rate is and underestimate,” Pollak said.

Companies like Amazon and Meta are hoping to snag generative AI talent with six-figure salaries. Since the beginning of this year, the number of listings related to generative AI on the job site Indeed quadrupled, according to data from Indeed obtained by The Wall Street Journal. Meta, for instance, posted a job listing for a generative AI research engineer with an annual salary as high as $137,000. And chip giant Nvidia posted an entry-level job opening for a generative AI research scientist. The growth of generative AI-roles comes as companies warm up to the idea that understanding generative AI tools like ChatGPT may, in fact, be a skill that can improve products and boost productivity.

The survey indicated that 40% of the business leaders surveyed think recent college graduates are unprepared to enter the workforce. The poor perception of recent Gen Z graduates on some business leaders may even be impacting their hiring decisions, the survey indicated. China's economy is facing perhaps its biggest challenges since a manufacturing boom sent its economy into overdrive in the last couple of decades. It's comparable to the economy young people in the US faced as they left college in the depth of the financial crisis in 2008/9. While things should get better if the economy rebounds, there's a more existential issue facing China's young people. Yet economic instability among China's young threatens to give him an unwanted headache nonetheless. There are wider existential issues facing young employees the world over, with the AI boom forcing many to completely reassess their skillset and career aspirations.

China's youth unemployment rate hit a record high of 20.8% in May. On June 13, the Radii media outlet tweeted a photo collage of some of these graduating students donning black or purple graduation gowns in various poses. While this particular pose is trending this year, this graduation season's posts were often accompanied by other happier pictures of the graduating students. It also isn't the first time graduates in China have taken unusual graduation photos, according to posts seen by Insider on Xiaohongshu. These trending poses of despondence come as China's youth unemployment rate hit a record high of 20.8% in May, according to official statistics.

The oldest members of Gen Z are just a few years into being part of the workforce, and they're already being stereotyped as lazy. Hustle culture isn't dead — it's just getting a Gen Z rebrand. When I think of my peers and Gen Z, I don't hear anyone talk about corporate success or climbing the corporate ladder. Opinion | College Grads, Do ‘Follow Your Passions’

She found that if young people are encouraged to follow their passions, they tend to conform to societal expectations of traditional gender norms: Men choose sciences, women choose arts. If the future is indeed female (my hope), then women cannot wait around for society’s expectations to change. Some unsolicited advice for young women, at the risk of mansplaining:1) Don’t worry about what major you choose in college. Most college graduates ultimately build careers in areas of work that have little bearing on what their college major was. 2) Attend a college that offers a five-year degree program, with plenty of internship opportunities in the field you think you are interested in.

How to capture higher savings yields with a CD ladder
  + stars: | 2023-05-22 | by ( Kate Dore | Cfp | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
If you're boosting your emergency fund or saving for a short-term goal, a certificate of deposit ladder, or CD ladder, may help you capture higher yields amid interest rate uncertainty. After a series of interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve, options for cash, such as high-yield savings, Treasury bills and money market funds have become more competitive. However, experts say a CD ladder may be worth considering as the Fed weighs an interest rate pause or more rate hikes. Typically, a CD ladder involves splitting equal amounts of cash among multiple CDs with different maturity dates. "A CD ladder gives someone an opportunity to harvest a variety of yields over varying timelines," said Bankrate senior economic analyst Mark Hamrick.

The city Zibo became a tourism hot spot after videos of its barbecue went viral online. China’s economy is navigating a growing array of challenges. 1 best metro area for new grads in 2023 is the area surrounding Lubbock, Texas. Data is one thing, but what is it actually like to be a young person living in these areas? "Other cities did great in one or two areas max, but Lubbock offers the whole package," DeJohn says. Many of the clients Douglas works with are young homebuyers around her age and just out of college or grad school. "Here, I know I can afford the house I want and the life I want," she adds.
Amid graduation season, Gusto analyzed city data to see where young job seekers can get the biggest value. It ranked adjusted salaries for big cities that had the highest hiring rates for full-time young workers. 1, while New York City ranked No. To do this, Gusto looked at the 50 largest metro areas and what full-time hiring rates look like for young workers, including both college grads and non-grads. The following are large cities with high full-time hiring rates for young workers where the class of 2023 and young job seekers can get the biggest bang for their buck, per Gusto's analysis.
Though rent growth has slowed in recent months, renters in large cities are still feeling the effects of the 2021-22 rent boom. Residents of these places are now asking the question: If so many people left, why is my rent still so expensive? The first was outbound migration, which led to weaker housing demand in city centers. "High house prices, high rents, and rising interest rates are probably pushing back against household formation," Ozimek told me. If more employees keep adopting remote work — which, I'll admit, is a big "if" — that indicates housing demand is bound to increase.
The disconnect between perception and reality only worsens over time: A decade into their careers, students anticipate making more than $204,560. That's well over the average mid-career salary of $98,647, according to Glassdoor. They just won't necessarily be paid more than last year's graduating class.
4-day work week trials have found a shortened work week can improve employees' work-life balance. vChief says its 4-day work week helps employees juggle jobs as parents, self-care, and side hustles. Niebauer said that the 4-day work week has helped the company with employee retention, and they've also attracted over-qualified candidates for the company's roles. "Without feeling like they're going to be penalized for it, without feeling like they're going to look like they're distracted at work." "I really believe that people shouldn't live their lives for work," Niebauer said.
