It will function like a channel within the Max streaming platform. Quito, Ecuador CNN —The body of the assassinated Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was buried in a private ceremony in the country’s capital on Friday night. The 59-year-old was laid to rest in the Monteolivo cemetery in northern Quito, his campaign team confirmed to CNN en Español. They said the burial was carried out in deep privacy, with his coffin escorted by members of the police along with his closest relatives. Quito, Ecuador CNN —A candidate in Ecuador’s upcoming presidential election, Fernando Villavicencio, was assassinated at a campaign event Wednesday, President Guillermo Lasso confirmed on social media, vowing the killing will not go unpunished. He was gunned down 10 days before the first round of the presidential election was set to take place on August 20. Ecuador’s Attorney General’s Office said the suspected gunman died in police custody following an exchange of fire with security personnel. CNN —At least 11 “complete bodies” and dozens of body parts, including human heads, were recovered on Wednesday from a major prison in Ecuador, after days of deadly prison clashes. The remains were collected at the Litoral Penitentiary in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where violence first erupted on Saturday. Some of the victims appeared to have been beheaded, the National Forensic Service of Ecuador told CNN en Español Wednesday. Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso has also signed a decree declaring a state of emergency across the country’s entire penitentiary system for the next 60 days. Over the past two years, Lasso has named five different directors of the prison service, but none have proven able to reduce the violence.

The layoffs, which started Wednesday and were expected to impact hundreds of employees, largely had been completed by Thursday afternoon. The series of changes, which came after Licht conducted a months-long review of CNN’s business after taking over in May as the network’s head, notably included the ending of live programming on HLN, CNN’s longtime sister channel. CNN —Angela Álvarez made Latin Grammy history on Thursday by winning the award for best new artist at age 95. She was discouraged from pursuing a career in music by her father but found joy performing for her family. Over the years, she sang for her family about her life and developed a collection of songs she composed. At the encouragement and support of her grandson, she eventually recorded and released collection of her songs in 2021. The Latin Grammy nomination came as a surprise to her, Álvarez told CNN en Español last month.
