The Securities and Exchange Commission charged Harvest Volatility Management and Merrill Lynch on Wednesday for exceeding clients' predesignated investment limits over a two-year period. The SEC said Merrill connected its clients to Harvest while it knew that investors' accounts were exceeding the set exposure levels under Harvest's management. Both Merrill and Harvest received larger management fees while investors were exposed to greater financial risks, the SEC said. Both companies were found to neglect policies and procedures that could have been adopted to alert investors of exposure exceeding the designated limits. "Today's action holds Merrill and Harvest accountable for dropping the ball in executing these basic duties to their clients, even as their clients' financial exposure grew well beyond predetermined limits."

A Colorado jury on Monday rejected an insanity defense and convicted the man who gunned down 10 people at a Boulder supermarket three years ago of murder. Earlier this year, a federal judge ordered Musk to testify as part of the SEC’s probe of the billionaire’s $44 billion acquisition. The agency is examining whether Musk followed the law when disclosing his purchases of Twitter stock and whether his statements in relation to the deal were misleading. CNN —The US soldier who ran across the border from South to North Korea last year was sentenced Friday to one year in confinement and dishonorable discharge after pleading guilty to charges of desertion and assault. The time King spent in confinement after his apprehension will count toward his sentence, the Army said. Military officials previously said that in July 2023 King “willfully and without authorization” crossed into North Korea shortly after he was released from a detention facility in South Korea. One day later, King joined a tour of the Joint Security Area in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea from which he fled across the demarcation line and into Pyongyang’s custody. Several months later, the US received word that North Korea wanted to return King.

A Philadelphia man admitted to reporting a hoax mass shooting and then a bomb threat in retaliation over a fantasy football argument, authorities said Wednesday. "On August 15th a man named (the victim) is headed around oslo and has a shooting planned with multiple people on his side involved. Norwegian authorities spent 900 man hour investigating and disproving that threat, Fish said. “While already being prosecuted for one hoax threat spurred by, of all things, his fantasy football league, Matthew Gabriel inexplicably decided to send another,” U.S. Attorney Jacqueline Romero said. Court documents did not outline the nature of Gabriel's beef with the University of Iowa student and Fish declined to reveal those details.

A former CIA officer was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in prison for drugging and sexually abusing and filming multiple women without their consent, in one of the most serious misconduct cases in the agency's history. Former CIA officer Brian Jeffrey Raymond FBI / AP fileRaymond had pleaded guilty in Nov. 2023 to one count each of sexual abuse, abusive sexual contact, coercion and enticement, and transportation of obscene material. He also pleaded guilty to drugging and sexually abusing four women, as well as engaging in nonconsensual sexual contact with six women, as part of a plea agreement. "After drugging these women, he stripped, sexually abused, and photographed them. Raymond read out a statement in court in which he expressed remorse for his actions, according to the AP.

CNN —Described as “disgusting” with “horrifying” conditions, the detention center music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs now calls home is a far cry from the Miami and Los Angeles mansions he once lived in. A federal judge denied Combs bail Wednesday saying the bail proposal set forth by his defense attorneys was “insufficient” in addressing the court’s concerns. This after the Federal Bureau of Prisons shuttered its Manhattan complex shortly after multimillionaire financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide in 2019. A month later, inmate Edwin Cordero died in a fight that broke out inside the prison. The incident prompted a Justice Department investigation assessing whether the Bureau of Prisons had “adequate contingency plans” to address inmate living conditions.
