[1/3] Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump attends a 2024 presidential election campaign event in Summerville, South Carolina, U.S. September 25, 2023. No third-party candidate has won a modern U.S. presidential election, although they have at times played outsized roles as spoilers by taking votes from major party candidates. Tony Lyons, cofounder of American Values 2024 told Reuters Kennedy shouldn't be considered a danger to just Biden or just Trump. Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said: "Polls show President Trump absolutely crushing Joe Biden even with other candidates present, both nationally and in battleground states." 'PEOPLE WANT BETTER CHOICES'While cash is flowing to third party options, Biden and Trump are raising even more.

People with the group No Labels hold signs during a rally on Capitol Hill in Washington, July 18, 2011. More than 15,000 people in Arizona have registered to join a new political party floating a possible bipartisan "unity ticket" against Joe Biden and Donald Trump. No Labels, the nonprofit group actively working to field a third party ticket for president in 2024, doubled its annual revenue last year over 2021, collecting $21 million, nearly all of it from wealthy donors who gave $100,000 or more. Outgoing Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., has long been rumored to be among the possible candidates to top a No Labels unity ticket. That group has raised $1.4 million so far this election cycle, according to Federal Election Commission records.

In today's big story, we're looking at what the $650 billion in unrealized losses means for financial firms. That's the unrealized losses US financial firms wracked up as of September 30, according to Moody's estimate. That means there's a lot of wiggle room for how big banks can portray them on their balance sheet. To be sure, big banks are better capitalized than SVB. Big banks' share prices noticeably dropped as bond prices sunk.

For over 200 years, tailors have been crafting high-end bespoke suits on London's famous Savile Row. A custom-made two-piece suit can cost £6,000. And while a tailor's tools are simple, the skills needed to turn a paper pattern into a pressed suit take years to master. We followed Kathryn Sargent, the first female master tailor on Savile Row, to find out how she crafts a bespoke suit — and to learn what makes Savile Row suits so expensive.

The very existence of the No Labels group is fanning Democratic anxiety about Trump’s chances against an incumbent president facing questions about his age and record. If even a small number of those voters were to back a No Labels candidate next year, Biden could fall short. No Labels party members skew younger. Twelve percent of them live in the 4th Congressional District, which includes Arizona State University. Such a poll would be meaningless because a large swath of voters won’t know anything about the No Labels candidate before a campaign is run, he said.

Student loan repayments restart in October after a three-year suspension during the COVID-19 pandemic. In isolation, none would likely shift policymakers' sense of the short-term risks or change their focus on quelling still-elevated inflation. By Goldman's estimate the economy would still be growing at a 1.3% annual rate at that point. But the amounts they see sliced from GDP are more than the 1% growth rate Fed officials expected the economy to muster as of June, and beyond many private forecasts as well. Some economists say the resumption of student loan repayments for tens of millions of borrowers may already be reshaping behavior.

The U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority confirmed it blocked the original $69 billion deal that Microsoft first put forward in January 2022. Instead, these rights will be divested to Ubisoft before Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Washington, DC CNN —Americans became slightly less optimistic about the economy this month, following two straight months of growing confidence. Sentiment had been on an upswing throughout the summer, mostly due to slower inflation, and is well above the record lows reached this time last year. Signs of cooling inflationGas prices, which are highly visible indicators of inflation for consumers, have risen in recent weeks, which could weigh on sentiment in the future. Still, consumers face the resumption of student loan payments later this year, and that could weigh on household budgets. US consumers opened up their wallets this summer, with many flocking to the smash-hit “Barbie” movie, attending concerts by Taylor Swift or Beyoncé, or traveling abroad.

The cost of starter homes has grown in every US metro but three since last year, Redfin said. San Francisco, Austin, and Phoenix starter home prices declined by 13.3%, 12.2%, and 9.7%, respectively. That doesn't mean that these starter homes are cheap, or the incomes needed to afford them are minuscule. Similar to Austin and San Francisco, Bokhari chops it up to the ebb and flow of supply and demand. While starter home prices decreased in San Francisco, Austin, and Phoenix, Redfin found that the typical starter home sold for a record $243,000 in June.

Saul Loeb | Afp | Getty ImagesHalf of Americans polled widely view China as the biggest threat facing the U.S., a new Pew research center survey revealed. In an open-ended question, Americans were asked to name any country as the greatest threat to the U.S. — 50% named China. While it's difficult to compare responses from year to year, Pew noted that "Americans have not always seen China as the top threat to the United States." "When we last asked a question of this sort in 2019, equal shares of Americans pointed to China and Russia as the greatest threat facing their country," it said. The survey reflects Americans' view of China have become more negative over time — particularly since 2020, added Pew.

Centrist group No Labels is preparing to possibly field a third-party candidate in 2024. But it remains unclear whether their candidate would be a Republican or a Democrat. In audio obtained by Insider, one top leader said it would be a "flip of a coin." "The No Labels effort would elect Donald Trump," Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, a Trump critic, recently told The Hill. But historically, the group has been supported by some Republican donors, including those who've also contributed to Trump.

Washington, DC CNN —Spending at US retailers rose in June for the third month in a row, in a subdued show of resilience from American consumers. Retail spending, which is adjusted for seasonality but not inflation, rose 0.2% in June, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. Furniture sales jumped 1.4% in June from the prior month, while spending at department stores fell by 2.4% during the same period. Excluding sales at gasoline stations and on cars and parts, retail sales rose 0.3% in June from May. From a year earlier, overall retail sales rose 1.5% in June, the second-weakest pace since May 2020.

The West Virginia Democrat’s model has served him well with repeated statewide wins in one of the most conservative pro-Trump states in the nation. For now, Manchin’s noncommittal answers are worrying some of his Democratic colleagues. Polls show that both Biden and Trump, the front-runner for the GOP nomination, are unpopular. It argues, therefore, that 79 electoral votes are potentially at risk for Biden from the involvement of a third-party challenger. Such a challenger would also need to win states where Biden won big, and at least some conservative bastions.

Washington, DC CNN —The number of small businesses saying they raised their prices fell in June to its lowest level since March 2021, according to a survey released Tuesday by the National Federation of Independent Business. The share of respondents who reported higher prices dropped by three points last month to 29%, “still a very inflationary level but trending down,” the report showed. “Inflation and labor shortages continue to be great challenges for small businesses,” said the NFIB’s chief economist Bill Dunkelberg in a release. The current tight labor market has been keeping pressure on employers to raise prices to protect their margins — a dynamic that Fed Chair Jerome Powell discussed in recent remarks. The impact of improving supply chainsThe economy has slowed from its red-hot pace after rebounding from the pandemic, but some dynamics that prompted businesses to raise prices have been slowly unwinding.

And for the past few years, these books have been written by Colleen Hoover. In 2022 alone, Hoover’s novels sold 14.3 million copies and in total, more than 24 million copies to date. Why natural latex mattresses are so expensive
  + stars: | 2023-06-28 | by ( Clancy Morgan | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: 1 min
One of the most expensive mattresses on the market is made from natural latex. You can buy a memory-foam mattress for a few hundred dollars, but natural latex mattresses usually cost over $1,500 and can exceed $2,000. Latex sap from rubber trees is in high demand from dozens of industries, including car tires. Some mattress companies source their latex from organic- and fair-trade-certified farms in Guatemala, but the latex from these farms comes at a premium compared to the latex from noncertified plantations. We explored why natural latex mattresses are so expensive.
