“One of the things I would want to do as president is go to Congress and seek the repeal of the First Step Act. “At no point, as a congressman or as governor, has Ron DeSantis ever supported the final version of the First Step Act,” DeSantis campaign press secretary Bryan Griffin told CNN in an email. His rapid response director, Christina Pushaw – one of the bill’s strongest critics – once strongly backed Trump on criminal justice reform. DeSantis pointed to the First Step Act as a potential model for prison reform and re-entry programs in Florida. “We, I think, need to look at after seeing what the federal government did with the prison reform and how to do some re-entry,” the governor said.

Britain's Covid inquiry has become a political farce

London CNN —Britain’s Covid inquiry was supposed to give closure to people who lost loved ones in the pandemic. It’s instead become a political circus that could hurt both Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak. Johnson undercut Sunak by directly handing his own information to the inquiry. This is the committee’s investigation into the infamous Partygate scandal, which led to Johnson being fined by police for breaking Covid rules. Johnson had initially told parliament that all rules were followed at all times.

In turn, Mr. DeSantis’s camp suggested the images were obviously fake, comparing them to memes circulated by Mr. Trump and his allies. But those images — which included a video of Mr. DeSantis in a woman’s suit adapted from “The Office” and a “recording” of a conversation between Mr. DeSantis, Adolf Hitler and the Devil — were clearly intended to be humorous and easy to discern as doctored. Who knows?” The image, which appeared to be photoshopped, had earlier been posted by Mr. Trump on his Truth Social website. “This is the big information security problem of the 21st century,” said Matthew Stamm, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Drexel University who reviewed the images of Mr. Trump and Dr. Fauci and strongly doubted their authenticity. Unlike Mr. DeSantis’s video, the R.N.C.

Ron DeSantis accused Trump of proposing "Soviet dystopian nonsense." Christina Pushaw attacked Trump's plan for new federally-chartered US cities on federal land. Ron DeSantis publicly battled with former President Donald Trump's defenders on Twitter over what she called the ex-president's "Soviet dystopian" plan for American cities. This is Soviet dystopian nonsense," she tweeted. A Republican consultant close to Trump's campaign told Insider in March that Trump came up with the idea for Freedom Cities himself and was likely inspired by Saudi Arabia's futuristic desert cities.

Ron DeSantis's campaign team held a donor briefing on Thursday at Four Seasons Hotel Miami. The event was held a day after the governor's glitch-filled campaign announcement on Twitter. Members of the campaign team gave talking points on how to spin the Twitter meltdown. "We all know we definitely would have preferred that the internet had not broken, without question," a member of DeSantis's campaign team said in the audio. One team member surmised that most candidates would have "melted" under the pressure of people waiting for the announcement to kick off.
Bundesliga set for thrilling final day title decider

In fact, the last season Bayern didn’t win the championship was the 2011/12 campaign, when now Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp guided Borussia Dortmund to the title. That leaves soccer fans looking to the Bundesliga for a dose of end-of-season drama with the championship set to be decided on the final day of the season. “We stopped moving, stopped helping, stopped showing courage.”Perhaps, Bayern had become complacent, suffering the shock loss despite taking a 25th-minute lead through Serge Gnabry. Former Chelsea and Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel took over at Bayern in March. Bayern travels to 10th-placed FC Köln on the final matchday hoping for a win and a surprise Dortmund slip up in what is set to be a tense final day.
Opinion: Vladimir Putin’s anxious time

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. He imagines a boy sitting “upon the high and giddy mast” of a ship tossed by wind and waves. “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown,” concludes the king in Shakespeare’s play. Russia said that President Vladimir Putin was the intended target of a foiled Ukrainian drone attack on the Kremlin, an allegation Ukraine denied. The unfortunate monarch who was the last to own the original St. Edward’s Crown, King Charles I, was convicted of treason and beheaded on January 30, 1649.

Several states, including Georgia, Idaho and most notably Florida, have passed varying laws making it easier to ban books and limit what American educators can teach. I am the president of a private, nonprofit university in Rhode Island, a state founded on the values of freedom and tolerance. The new laws censor their voices as well as those of their faculty and students. Proponents of these laws attempt to justify them by repeating claims that universities are places where political correctness runs rampant and students are intolerant of alternative viewpoints. Students should not ‌violate university policies and ‌shout down speakers they don’t agree with.
Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski says a Republican immigration bill would criminalize "empathy." Wenski accused Florida Republicans of trying to "demonize" vulnerable people. In a statement issued Thursday, Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski echoed that criticism, accusing Florida Republicans of playing state-level politics with a federal issue. It is not the first time that DeSantis and Florida's Republicans have run afoul of the Catholic Church. In February, the Florida Catholic Conference, which represents the state's bishops, told Insider that it opposes a DeSantis-led push to expand the death penalty.
Disney's Florida surprise: an end run around DeSantis

[1/2] People gather at the Magic Kingdom theme park before the "Festival of Fantasy" parade at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, U.S. July 30, 2022. Florida lawmakers passed a bill in February giving Governor Ron DeSantis effective control over a board that oversees municipal services and development in a special district that encompasses Walt Disney World resort. "It completely circumvents the authority of this board to govern," board member Brian Aungst Jr. was quoted as saying. Disney's then-chief executive officer, Bob Chapek, publicly voiced disappointment with the measure, saying he called DeSantis to express concern about it becoming law. In a move political observers viewed as retaliation for Disney's criticism of the Parental Rights in Education Act, Florida lawmakers passed legislation that ended Disney's virtual autonomy in developing 25,000 acres in central Florida where its theme parks are located.
DeSantis warned that Disney hadn't seen the last of their feud: "There's more to come." "There's a lot of little back and forth going on now with the state control," DeSantis said, the audience booing at the mention of Disney. The governor-appointed board is talking to lawyersIn his new book, DeSantis has a chapter about the dust-up with Disney and how he retaliated against the company. He even revealed that he and his wife, Casey DeSantis, got married at Walt Disney World — a fact first reported by Insider. "The media STILL doesn't realize that Governor DeSantis always thinks 10 steps ahead," Christina Pushaw from the governor's rapid response team wrote on Twitter.

In the photo, Markowicz is seen (third from the left) wearing a pink dress and holding her book, while Pushaw (fifth from the left) is wearing a blue dress. The photo of Christina Pushaw has been altered to make her knees appear red.
The Catholic Church is speaking out against a GOP push to expand the death penalty. Making it "easier to impose death is deeply concerning," Michael Sheedy of the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops told Insider. 'Deeply concerning'Any effort to expand the death penalty in Florida will face obstacles: the state and US constitutions. "An execution represents a judgment by fallible human beings that a person is beyond redemption – a judgment the Catholic Church rejects," they said. Tony Argiz, right, recalled how the Catholic Church helped him when he came to the US from Cuba as an unaccompanied minor.
Marjorie Taylor Greene and George Santos are co-sponsoring a bill banning some books in schools. It aims to end "sexualization of children," echoing bills restricting access to LGBTQ material. Santos is the only openly gay Republican member of Congress. Ron DeSantis last year signed the so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill, restricting the teaching of LGBTQ issues in schools. Santos is one 10 LGBTQ members of Congress and the only Republican LGBTQ member.
TWO YEARS AGO when Kate Arends and her family moved into their 1956 rambler-style house in St. Paul, Minn., they encountered a thoroughly outdated kitchen that included uninterrupted oak paneling on the ceilings and walls. Not loving the wood’s golden hue, Ms. Arends, founder of lifestyle brand Wit & Delight, considered painting over it or sanding it down to a more neutral complexion, but the costs seemed prohibitive and the payoff uncertain. After the family had lived with the wood for a year, they decided to honor its hue but surround it with more modern décor. They painted Shaker-style cabinets a daring, un-woodsy powdery rose tone—Sulking Room Pink by Farrow & Ball—and further punched them up by installing slabs of Calacatta Viola marble with its trademark whorls of black and deep purple. An ink-blue gas range adds another shot of the unexpected. “If the wood is in great shape, the constraints of working within the shade or hue of the stain might seem limiting, but some really interesting solutions can come from those constraints,” said Ms. Arends.
Each of these companies was downgraded by at least one ratings firm in recent weeks. At the same time, the economy has been losing steam, resulting in lower earnings and darkening the outlook for companies, especially in consumer-facing sectors. Credit downgrades can drive up financing costs for companies and cause executives to take additional action such as reducing debt loads. There were 33 S&P downgrades in September, the most in a single month since June 2020. Businesses without immediate refinancing needs, however, tend to see less of a direct impact from credit downgrades.
Pappas, 27, an aspiring actress, says it is not the dividend young people hoped for after a ravaging debt crisis and a decade of austerity. He attributes the surge in rents mainly to "an overly depressed market during the (debt) crisis." Loan-to-values on mortgages have dropped to 70-75%, from more than 100% before the debt crisis. Banks' caution underpins financial stability but could also keep young working people off the property ladder for decades. Officials expect about 10,000 young couples aged 25-39 will benefit from the programme offering 1% interest on loans up to 150,000 euros.
CNN —There are signs that the United Kingdom could be heading into a fall Covid-19 wave, and experts say the United States may not be far behind. A recent increase in Covid-19 cases in England doesn’t seem to be driven by a new coronavirus variant, at least for now, although several are gaining strength in the US and across the pond. Spector runs the Zoe Health Study, which uses an app to let people in the UK and US report their daily symptoms. After seeing a downward trend for the past few weeks, the Zoe study saw a 30% increase in reported Covid-19 cases within the past week. In the US, some models have predicted that Covid-19 cases will begin to rise again in October and continue to increase into the winter.
Migrants told the Miami Herald they signed forms to board a flight to Delaware organized by Ron DeSantis. DeSantis said the flight — to near Biden's home — was arranged and then canceled to trick the media. The cancellation came as DeSantis faced a wave of criticism over flights carrying immigrants he chartered last week from Texas to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. "The entire Democrat-corporate media industrial complex swarmed Delaware today because they thought that DeSantis Air was gonna land there," she tweeted. Migrants taken to Martha's Vineyard have said they were lured onto the flights on false pretenses, and were promised benefits and job opportunities that didn't exist.
