CNN —Mementoes from the personal collection of British photographer and model Pattie Boyd, who inspired a raft of famous songs by former husbands George Harrison and Eric Clapton, are going under the hammer. An anonymous love letter to Boyd from Clapton sent in 1970. Christie’s Images Ltd 2024Among the items on offer is a love letter written by Clapton in 1970, when Boyd was already married to Harrison, one of the songwriter’s close friends. However, Clapton and Boyd would split in 1987 after their relationship was affected by “substance abuse and infidelities,” reads the press release. Items up for sale include photos of Boyd, Harrison and Clapton, as well as postcards, telegrams and letters.

Reattributed to da Vinci, it sold in 2013 for $83 million and then again for $127.5 million. “Adoration,” thought to have been painted around 1628, has at various times in its 400-year life been viewed as a work by Rembrandt. Three years later, it was offered for sale by Sotheby’s as a Rembrandt but went unsold. In 1985, the painting came back on the market, at Christies, and this time it was sold — but only as a work from the “circle” of Rembrandt.

More than 3,500 people from 34 countries registered for the chance to bid on the superstar Elton John’s rocket-shaped cocktail shakers, ornate jumpsuits, and black-and-white fashion photography at Christie’s “Goodbye Peachtree Road” auction this week. Two sales over three days featuring the celebrated musician’s belongings rocketed to $14.4 million, with auction-house fees, outperforming the high estimate of $11.3 million. Bidders vied for silver leather platform boots the singer wore throughout the 1970s (they sold for $94,000, more than nine times the high estimate) and an 18-karat gold Rolex watch with a leopard-print dial (it fetched $176,400, about three times the high estimate). Most of the remaining auctions will take place online through Feb. 28, including sales of John’s celebrity portraits, jewelry and Versace clothes. With six online sales to go, the collection has already exceeded the original (and perhaps conservative) expectation of $10 million set by Christie’s.

CNN —In the land of Hello Kitty, kawaii (“cute”) culture and the Neo-Pop art of 1990s Japan, Tetsuya Ishida was an outlier. An untitled 2004 acrylic and oil painting by late Japanese artist Tetsuya Ishida from the Gagosian retrospective "My Anxious Self." Ishida, who had gone to art school, worked part-time at a print shop and as a night security guard. Many of the 200 or so paintings Ishida completed in his lifetime portray the gloom of becoming a cog in the economic machine. Another painting entitled "Gripe," painted by Ishidia in 1996, portrays a Japanese salaryman with lobster claws for hands.

LONDON (AP) — A major work by surrealist painter René Magritte that hasn’t been shown in public for a quarter century could fetch 50 million pounds ($64 million) at auction next month. Christie’s auction house announced Saturday that it will offer “L’ami intime” (The Intimate Friend) at a March 7 sale in London marking a century of the surrealist movement in art. The painting includes several of the Belgian artist’s signature motifs, including a bowler-hatted man and fluffy white clouds on a blue sky. Last exhibited publicly in Brussels in 1998, it’s being auctioned for the first time since 1980, and has a pre-sale estimate of between 30 million and 50 million pounds ($38 million and $64 million). Camu said Magritte, who died in 1967, has become the most “in-demand” of all the surrealists.

Reuters —An early work by British artist David Hockney, a painting depicting his well-known pool motif and not seen in public for more than 40 years, is headed for auction with an estimate of around $20 million. The painting, last seen in public in 1979, is a highlight of auction house Christie’s “20th/21st Century: London Evening Sale” on March 7. The 1926 vanishing act isn’t even mentioned until episode 2. First we see the way the author’s eccentric family, its evaporating fortune, her traumatizing experiences as a World War I nursing volunteer and her work in the hospital dispensary (where she learned about poisons) influenced the 70-odd novels (as well as plays and short stories) that continue to disturb and fascinate readers across the globe. Ms. Worsley’s idea—a good one—is to track Christie’s life alongside her crime-ridden imagination and see where and whether the two intersect.

X, the social media company formerly known as Twitter, could lose as much as $75 million in advertising revenue by the end of the year as dozens of major brands pause their marketing campaigns after its owner, Elon Musk, endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory this month. They list how much ad revenue X employees fear the company could lose through the end of the year if advertisers do not return. On Friday, X said in a statement that $11 million in revenue was at risk and that the exact figure fluctuated as some advertisers returned to the platform and others increased spending. Three paintings by Paul Cézanne that a Swiss museum foundation said it had to sell to ward off insolvency fetched $52.5 million, with buyer’s fees, at a Christie’s auction in New York last night. Markus Stegmann, the director of the Museum Langmatt in Baden, said that after subtracting buyer’s fees, its parent foundation will reap 42.3 million Swiss francs from the sale of the three paintings, enough to keep the museum operating. The money will be used to create an endowment that will secure the museum’s future. It’s a relief.”The Foundation Langmatt’s decision to sell the Cézannes earned wide criticism before the auction. The Swiss branch of the International Council of Museums, which said the sale was a clear breach of its guidelines for de-accessioning from museum collections, called for the paintings to be withdrawn.

The 1890-93 scene, “Fruits and Jar of Ginger,” was sold by Museum Langmatt in the Swiss community of Baden as part of a broader campaign to renovate its 1900-01 art nouveau villa and establish an endowment. Before the auction could happen, the museum reached a restitution settlement with the heirs of a Jewish collector who previously sold the Cézanne under duress.
