Denny Hamlin didn't chill Sunday with his bravado that this is indeed the year he will finally win a NASCAR championship. The day after his win at Bristol Motor Speedway hurdled Hamlin and his No. 11 team into the second round of NASCAR's playoffs, Hamlin was still pumping his chest. Hamlin shared a back-and-forth with the crowd, and that's when he first declared that this is, finally, his year. Hamlin only got the win in Bristol but was strong enough to sweep the opening two races, won by Larson and Reddick.

Cast members Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard, Director Michel Franco attend the North American premiere of "Memory" at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada September 12, 2023. REUTERS/Carlos Osorio Acquire Licensing RightsTORONTO Sept 12 (Reuters) - Actors Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard brought Hollywood glamour to the Toronto International Film Festival for their family drama “Memory” amid strikes that have kept most celebrities off the carpets. Sarsgaard joins the North American premiere of the film after taking the prize for best actor at the Venice Film Festival, which marks the start of the awards season and regularly throws up big favourites for the Oscars. For Sarsgaard, who plays a man with early-onset dementia named Saul, the film is about connection and working through trauma. “There is a way out of trauma through love,” said Chastain, and she hopes this film helps the audience realize that in their own lives.

ROME (AP) — “Poor Things,” a film about Victorian-era female empowerment, won the Golden Lion on Saturday at a Venice Film Festival largely deprived of Hollywood glamour because of the writers and actors strikes. The film, starring Emma Stone, won the top prize at the 80th edition of the festival, which is often a predictor of Oscar glory. The film tells the story of two young boys’ odyssey from Dakar, Senegal, to the detention camps in Libya and finally across the Mediterranean to Europe. Peter Sarsgaard won best actor for “Memory,” in which he co-stars with Jessica Chastain in a film about high schoolers reuniting. Cailee Spaeny won best actress for “Priscilla,” Sofia Coppola's portrait of the private side of Priscilla and Elvis Presley.

Actors went on strike in July, joining writers who had walked off the job in May, to demand that streaming sites and film studios improve their contracts and impose curbs on the use of artificial intelligence. SOLIDARITYVenice's artistic director Alberto Barbera had predicted that the actors of just three of the 23 films in competition would not be able to come to the festival because of the strike. No official reason was given, but one festival insider said she believed it was out of solidarity. Without their actors, the directors did most of the talking and were regularly quizzed about the dispute. Some of the actors who did make it to the festival wore T-shirts promoting the strike, as did the president of the main jury, Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle.

REUTERS/Yara Nardi Acquire Licensing RightsVENICE, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani brought sparkle and stars to the canal city on Saturday with a "One Night Only" fashion show coinciding with the 80th Venice Film Festival. The Venice Film Festival has lacked its usual star power this year with many Hollywood A-listers forced to shun the event because of the actors' strike. However, Armani, one of Italy’s greatest postwar designers, had no problem filling the city's old armoury with glitz and glamour. Armani’s "One Night Only" fashion spectacles have previously been held in cities including Tokyo, New York, London and Dubai.

Are We Finally Ready to Take Tammy Wynette Seriously?
  + stars: | 2023-09-01 | by ( Lindsay Zoladz | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Chastain tackles the songs herself, and though her pipes are decent, her performances never quite transcend honky-tonk bar karaoke. Watching the series, you miss the specific and elusive magic of Wynette’s own voice, making clear how easy it is to take for granted. As Clinton’s curt 1992 dismissal attests, the women Wynette sang about and embodied in her songs often seemed at odds with second-wave feminism. She often sang about the sorts of people and situations that aren’t usually championed in a culture that devalues women’s work and doesn’t treat their perspectives seriously. Easton notes, astutely, that Wynette’s songs often depicted “failures of the domestic,” and that “Wynette’s best work is about when the most private failures become public scandals.”

Signage is seen at the headquarters of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Washington, D.C., U.S., May 12, 2021. The SEC said Impact Theory marketed its Founder's Keys--sold in "Legendary," "Heroic" and "Relentless" tiers--as a means to profit from its business by investing at an early stage. Impact Theory allegedly raised $29.9 million by selling 13,921 Founder's Keys in late 2021, and received $978,000 of royalties from secondary sales. The SEC said Impact Theory also compared its NFTs with "handing ($20) to Mark Zuckerberg in his dorm room," referring to the billionaire Facebook co-founder. SEC commissioners Hester Peirce and Mark Uyeda partially dissented from Monday's settlement, saying the regulator owed investors better guidance on NFTs.

REUTERS/Florence Lo/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 22 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge sentenced a former product manager at OpenSea, the world's largest marketplace for non-fungible tokens (NFTs), to three months in prison on Tuesday for buying NFTs he knew would soon be featured on the site's home page. Nathaniel Chastain, 33, was convicted of fraud and money laundering in federal court in Manhattan in May for what prosecutors called the first insider trading case involving digital assets. Chastain's attorneys had asked for no prison time, saying he had already lost his reputation, job and equity in OpenSea worth millions of dollars. Prosecutors unsealed charges against Chastain in June 2022, after a boom in NFT sales saw the market grow to about $40 billion in 2021.

The US Women’s National Team (USWNT) was on the cusp of winning its second Women’s World Cup – this time in front of a sell-out home crowd. The 1999 Women’s World Cup was a turning point for the women’s game, particularly in the US, and pictures of Chastain’s celebrations are synonymous with the surge of success for soccer in the States. The final of the tournament also still holds the record for the biggest attendance for a Women’s World Cup game. “[The 1999 tournament] is why I’m here, it’s why I’m in the US and playing for the US,” 2015 Women’s World Cup winner Sydney Leroux said according to FIFA. Anson Dorrance knew he was a pioneer during his eight years as head coach of the US Women’s National Team (USWNT). Any understanding of how and why the USWNT is women’s soccer’s dominant force, a four-time Women’s World Cup winner and favorite to win the next edition currently taking place in Australia and New Zealand, must start with Dorrance, the groundbreaker and the bricklayer. Five years later, the first Women’s World Cup was held in China – not that it was initially labelled a World Cup as world governing body FIFA worried it might not be a success. A third-placed finish followed at the 1995 Women’s World Cup, and then came the Atlanta Olympics a year later. The success of 1999 would lead to the world’s first professional women’s soccer league, the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA).

Michelle Wie West Wants One More Crack at a Major

They surfaced at a luncheon with Brandi Chastain and Kristi Yamaguchi, and during a climb up a flight of stairs, and a stroll through a lobby. That’s Michelle Wie West, that 6-foot-1 fixture of collective memory and modern golf history. She did not win as much as she wanted to, and certainly not as much as many people thought she would or should have. But after close to a quarter of a century in the spotlight, she is still one of the savviest stars women’s golf has ever had, a player plenty of people outside of golf know as a star even if they do not know golf. The competitive golf part of Wie’s life will most likely be done by dusk on Sunday, when the U.S. Women’s Open is scheduled to finish at Pebble Beach.

The wordless preshow — a big Hollywood star silently spinning — was born of an impulse. An early readthrough in Chastain’s apartment planted the seed of the idea: She did the reading from her armchair, prompting a transfixed Lloyd to suggest she consider performing the play that way. “I wanted it to feel like I’ve been sitting there for years,” she said, “and haven’t fully woken up to the possibilities.”And why does she rotate? Lloyd said that concept was central to the show’s design. “It’s a very political play — that’s why it’s endured — but it’s also very psychological, about someone spiraling out of control,” he said.
The home page of NFT marketplace OpenSea. Photo: Ariel Zambelich/The Wall Street JournalA former employee of NFT marketplace OpenSea was found guilty Wednesday of what federal prosecutors described as the first insider-trading case involving digital tokens, marking a win for the Justice Department in its push to police the crypto industry. A federal jury in New York convicted Nathaniel Chastain of wire fraud and money laundering for using nonpublic information from his employer to trade on nonfungible tokens in 2021. The Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office charged Mr. Chastain in 2022, accusing him of purchasing the NFTs ahead of OpenSea’s featuring them on its home page. Once the NFTs spiked in value after being featured, Mr. Chastain sold them, pocketing tens of thousands of dollars in profit, prosecutors said.
The case could have broader implications for assets that do not fit in to existing regulations preventing investment advisers, brokers and others from trading on material nonpublic information, legal experts have said. "You can't hold Nate to a standard that didn't exist," his lawyer Daniel Filor told jurors in his closing argument on Monday. "Nobody told Nate that he couldn't use or share that information." Prosecutor Allison Nichols said Chastain used anonymous OpenSea accounts to make the illegal trades, showing he knew what he was doing was wrong. "He hid what he was doing," Nichols told the jury in her rebuttal argument.
