They shelter in musty basements marked in chalk with “people underground” — a message to whichever troops happen to be fighting that day. Some waited their entire lives to enjoy their twilight years, only to have been left in a purgatory of loneliness. Homes built with their own hands are now crumbling walls and blown-out windows, with framed photographs of loved ones living far away. Some people have already buried their children, and their only wish is to stay close so they can be buried next to them. “I’ve lived through two wars,” said Iraida Kurylo, 83, whose hands shook as she recalled her mother screaming when her father was killed in World War II.

Childfree workers told Business Insider they often feel pressured to cover for parents at work. Benson's not alone in experiencing the tension of splitting work between childfree workers and those with kids. For childfree workers, it may lead to resentment, or feeling like their time isn't as valuable. And that might, in turn, lead to childfree workers being asked to take on more. But the childfree workers, parents, and experts that Business Insider spoke with say that making it a worker-to-worker dispute takes the onus off of companies and policy.

For example, a 70-minute train ride from Liverpool Street station to the town of Manningtree in Essex county is the starting point for discovering the Stour Valley scenery that inspired the painter John Constable. The approximately 3½-hour, 7½-mile trail passes through the village of Dedham, once a flourishing textile center, and where Constable attended grammar school. Depending on the season, you might see five-petal primroses in sun-dappled hedgerows, cowslips on grasslands where sheep graze, dainty white wood anemones or even orchids. On the 4-hour, 8½-mile walk from Limpsfield in Surrey (30 minutes from London Bridge station), famed for its carpet of sweet-scented bluebells in late spring, bird-watchers can listen for nightingales or spot hawks circling overhead. CNN —Five goals, as many overturned or disallowed, two red cards, and 21 minutes of stoppage time: those are just some of the numbers behind what was a wild and chaotic English Premier League game between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. CNN —President Joe Biden is just as low in the White House’s internal polls as in any of the public ones. But while Biden advisers are dismissive of Rep. Dean Phillips’ primary challenge launched this week, they are also annoyed about it. Still, they remain confident that Biden is Democrats’ best option in 2024. Boyle told CNN this week that between the war in Israel and Gaza and the chaos of House Republicans electing their new speaker, he had not had “one conversation with anyone” about Phillips. Abandoned golf courses are being reclaimed by nature

CNN —Golf courses, despite occupying large green spaces, are not necessarily good for the environment. Santa Barbara's Ocean Meadows golf course has been returned to its wetland state, which doubles as a flood defense for the city. Rivers and streams are often diverted or altered to make way for a golf course, but conservationists want them to flow freely. In other areas of the country, local councils are repurposing unprofitable municipal golf courses to create more natural spaces. A golf course turned nature reserve, Yalukit Willam can now be enjoyed by the Melbourne residents.

As the death toll rises in the Israel-Hamas war, they have become seats of anguish. On many campuses, these students agree on one thing: Their colleges, which are increasingly staking out positions of neutrality, have not done enough to support them. College officials, already under pressure to allow conservative opinions on campus, have been trying to preserve free speech and open debate. Some students were angry that a statement from the university president did not go far enough to acknowledge Palestinian deaths. “It shouldn’t be hard to support Palestinian rights and dignity ... while still condemning what Hamas did to Israeli civilians,” Spitalnick said.

A batch of data from Japan includes household spending and consumption figures, leading indicators, and the latest foreign exchange reserves. But Bank of Japan money market data indicates that the yen's jump on Tuesday was not the product of yen-buying intervention. The big policy event in Asia will be the Reserve Bank of India's interest rate decision, and more importantly, its guidance. DiotimaThe designer Rachel Scott’s focus on tailoring and craft — in particular, crochet made in her native Jamaica — has been clear since she launched her brand, Diotima, in 2021. But it wasn’t until she held her first presentation, at a gallery in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood earlier this month, that fashion week attendees were able to observe the line’s detailing up close: Models traversed the room in intricate bead vests and floor-length gowns made from delicate, netlike cotton fabrics. Scott, 39, formerly a vice president of design at Rachel Comey, also collaborated with the Jamaican visual artist Laura Facey this season, drawing inspiration from the work in Facey’s 2022 solo exhibition at the Kingston arts venue Ormsby Hall. “It had a haunting energy,” Scott said in a statement, “one that prompted me to reflect, once again, upon the history and legacy of slavery in the Caribbean.” Facey’s chalk drawing “Seed” (2022) appeared as a textile print, and the artist made small versions of her heart-shaped wooden sculptures, which Scott hung like talismans from long cord necklaces and silver hoop earrings.

The American nuclear family is officially dead, according to a new analysis from the Pew Research Center — even if some Americans haven't accepted it. In 1970, nearly 70% of American adults ages 25 to 49 were living with a spouse and at least one child. "Family living arrangements are becoming more and more diverse in their composition," Carolina Aragão, one of the authors of the Pew report, told Insider. While married adults with kids are still the most common family arrangement, "they are far less common than they were in the past." One of the biggest sticking points was the use of concrete, which some residents found ugly and drab, Barbara Laber said. Sept 11 (Reuters) - Portugal enjoyed their biggest-ever win as they thumped Luxembourg 9-0 at Estadio Algarve on Monday to preserve their perfect record in Euro 2024 qualifying. Substitute Joao Felix secured the record victory with a goal two minutes from time after Goncalo Inacio, Goncalo Ramos, and Diogo Jota all scored twice. Portugal's previous record was 8-0, which they achieved three times - twice against Liechtenstein (1994 and 1999) and once versus Kuwait (2003). Portugal have won all six of their Group J matches under Roberto Martinez, who took over in January, scoring 24 goals with none conceded. The result matched the biggest-ever loss for Luxembourg, who have 10 points and are third, three points behind Slovakia.

The Metropolitan Police said Friday they were searching Richmond Park in southwest London, near where the delivery van Daniel Khalife used to escape Wandsworth prison was spotted on Thursday.
