Not surprisingly, the news has given a jolt to the most liquid Chinese ETF today, as well. The iShares China Large Cap ETF (FXI) has been trading even higher than that so far on Tuesday. The ETF was trading considerably higher in pre-market trading hours and opened a whopping 6% higher from the prior day's close. And that's exactly why we need to look beyond the last few months to a get true sense of its trend. And at that point, the ETF would be hitting its highest level since early 2022.

Australia's central bank keeps rates on hold, stays hawkish
  + stars: | 2024-09-24 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) at the central bank's building in Sydney, Australia on May 2, 2022. The hawkish stance sent the Australian dollar 0.4% higher to $0.6864, the highest this year, and markets pared the chance of a December rate cut to 59% from 64% before the decision. Markets had wagered heavily on a steady outcome given underlying inflation remained sticky and the labor market held up surprisingly well. Governor Michele Bullock has used every opportunity recently to stress that the central bank does not expect a near-term rate cut. The RBA already trails other central bank in cutting rates, and the political pressure is ramping up for an easing.

In fact, the S & P 500 is on pace for a winning September — its first since 2019 — with a gain of more than 1%. The month is typically the worst stretch of the year on average for all three major averages and the Russell 2000, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac. Some of September's strength could be attributed to the Federal Reserve's supersized rate cut last week . The S & P 500 notched a fresh record close on Monday and an intraday all-time high on Tuesday. The benchmark S & P 500 typically pulls back nearly 1% on average in October in election years, per the Stock Trader's Almanac.

The firm is squarely focused on an improvement in the labor market driving the best possible returns. The stock market runs a bigger risk of an unsustainable melt-up, according to Ed Yardeni. AdvertisementStocks run the risk of seeing an unsustainable, dot-com style melt-up, thanks to the Federal Reserve's recent rate cut, according to market veteran Ed Yardeni. That move sparked a rally in stocks to fresh records —but it's also raised the odds of a stock market melt-up, he said, meaning investors are now facing the risk of an unsustainable market boom. And while inflation has cooled from its highs several years ago, it is still a risk, Yardeni noted. Advertisement"If they get to overheat the economy and get to create a bubble in the stock market, yeah they're creating some issues," Yardeni added.

"Today's policy measures are bold by historical standards," Betty Wang, the lead economist at Oxford Economics, wrote in a note on Tuesday. Stimulus measures don't address consumptionDespite the fanfare, analysts are divided over whether the moves that ease monetary policy constitute a massive "bazooka" stimulus. AdvertisementMost say the monetary easing policies don't address the lack of confidence contributing to depressed consumer spending. China has pulled out multiple support measures this year to shore up its economy and stock markets, but any kneejerk optimism has been shortlived. Advertisement"Overall, we feel today's measures are a step in the right direction, especially as multiple measures have been announced together rather than spacing out individual piecemeal measures to a more limited effect," Lynn Song, the Greater China chief economist at ING bank, wrote on Tuesday.

Americans are fretting over the job market
  + stars: | 2024-09-24 | by ( Bryan Mena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
Washington CNN —America’s slowing job market is taking a toll on people’s moods. The Conference Board’s latest consumer survey showed that Americans became much more pessimistic about the US economy’s current health and the future of the job market. “September’s decline was the largest since August 2021 and all five components of the Index deteriorated.”The US job market is in decent shape, but it is clearly running at a much slower pace these days than it has in recent years. Peterson said the weaker-than-expected survey results “reflected consumers’ concerns about the labor market and reactions to fewer hours, slower payroll increases, fewer job openings — even if the labor market remains quite healthy, with low unemployment, few layoffs and elevated wages.”The job market’s fate is unclear. Employers might be holding back on hiring for two good reasons: Uncertainty over the upcoming US presidential election and the fate of interest rates, CNN previously reported.

The Federal Reserve's move to lower interest rates by 50 basis points puts the U.S. economy on track for a soft landing, according to Goldman Sachs ' chief financial officer. His comments come as market participants question whether the U.S. central bank's jumbo rate cut has been delivered in time to bring down inflation without pushing the economy into recession. Some analysts have raised concerns about the outlook for the U.S. economy, warning that similar supersized rate cuts couldn't avert the recessions of the early 2000s and the global financial crisis. One basis point equals 0.01%. It was the first time the FOMC had cut by that much since the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, and, before that, the global financial crisis in 2008.

The relatively rare high-level press conference was scheduled after the U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates last week. That kicked off an easing cycle that theoretically gives China's central bank further room to cut its rates and boost growth in the face of deflationary pressure. Pan became PBOC governor in July 2023. He then told reporters in March, alongside China's annual parliamentary meeting, there was room to cut the RRR further. China's government system also means that policy is set at a far higher level than that of the financial regulators speaking Tuesday.

Each of the efforts, in varying ways, faces obstacles. The nation’s top leader, Xi Jinping, will need close cooperation from border countries, some of which are politically volatile, like Kyrgyzstan, or internationally isolated, like North Korea. Neighboring countries that have long been wary of China, like Vietnam, will need to be reassured. But others have warned of Chinese domination of the Laotian economy. The new initiatives would also be expensive, and China has begun emphasizing smaller Belt and Road projects elsewhere.

With little time to prepare, Tampa General Hospital began erecting a 10-foot-high flood barrier around the facility Monday because of the chance for storm surge and shifts in the storm’s track. A tropical storm watch was raised Monday afternoon for Florida’s Dry Tortugas and part of the Keys and Monday evening for Bonita Beach to Flamingo, where a storm surge watch is also in effect. Strong, potentially damaging winds and storm surge are likely near where the system ultimately comes ashore. Hurricane and tropical storm watches are already in effect for parts of Mexico and Cuba. The “storm surge, wind, and rainfall impacts will extend well away from the center, particularly to the east of the system.
