  + stars: | 2023-05-19 | by ( Joe Drape | Melissa Hoppert | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Mage, ridden by Javier Castellano, executed a frantic stretch run to capture an unpredictable Kentucky Derby that saw five contenders, including the favorite, scratched ahead of the race. Now, in only his fifth race, Mage moves on to Baltimore and the 148th Preakness Stakes, where he will be a Triple Crown contender and the only Derby horse in what is considered a weak field. First Mission, considered to be his biggest challenger, was scratched on Friday morning with a left hind ankle injury. Below, the Preakness horses are listed in order of post position, with comments by Joe Drape and Melissa Hoppert of The New York Times. The morning-line odds, set by Keith Feustle of Pimlico Race Course, were revised to reflect the scratch.
Kevin Dodge | The Image Bank | Getty ImagesWho pays for college, and howMost students and their parents rely on a combination of resources, Sallie Mae's data shows. Even now, there is still plenty of merit-based aid available and free scholarship matching services to help students find it. It's also not too late for families struggling to afford college next year to apply for financial assistance or ask the college financial aid office for more money. Set financial expectations earlywatch now"When it comes to who is responsible for paying for college, it really is a family decision," said Sallie Mae spokesman Rick Castellano. "Setting expectations and involving students in the college planning process ensures everyone enters this major decision with eyes wide open," he said.
LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Mage won the 149th running of the Kentucky Derby on a day when an abnormal string of horse deaths continued earlier in the day at Churchill Downs , casting a long shadow over America’s marquee racing event. Mage broke a step slow from the No. 8 post but quickly recovered as Verifying and Kingsbarns set a blistering early pace, covering the first half-mile in 45.73 seconds. As the leaders began to tire, jockey Javier Castellano navigated Mage into the clear as the field approached the final turn. Mage finished the 1 1/4-mile race in 2:01.57.
At Churchill Downs, Humans Failed the Horses Again

The modestly bred Mage rumbled down the stretch to win this year’s Kentucky Derby on Saturday at 15-1 odds. But their accomplishments were eclipsed by the death of seven horses at Churchill Downs in the lead-up to the Derby. Four horses were scratched because of veterinarians’ concerns about their health. A fifth was scratched because, well, the Lords of Churchill were suspicious of the trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. after two of his horses collapsed and died following races. Long after the Derby was over and the lights were going out on a tragic day, first, Churchill Downs, then the newly minted Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, released statements with the same message: It wasn’t them.

"Growing numbers of stop-outs and fewer returning students have contributed to the broader enrollment declines in recent years," said Doug Shapiro, executive director of the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. "There's a variety of issues students face in college, many unexpected," said Rick Castellano, a spokesperson for Sallie Mae. Students with 'some college' more likely to defaultIf Biden's plan to cancel $400 billion in student loans is blocked, default rates may spike, the U.S. Department of Education has warned. What to know about early action versus early decisionWhether it's nonbinding early action or early decision, which is binding, the deadlines for these types of applications are typically Nov. 1 or Nov.15 for a December decision, or even earlier for rolling admission. "A lot of people view early action or early decision as interchangeable," said Eric Greenberg, president of Greenberg Educational Group, a New York-based consulting firm. However, "early action, in certain cases, makes no difference in admission." Early decision, on the other hand, can "help leverage someone's admissions chances." watch now"If someone is applying early decision or early action and gets in, at that point in the calendar there's more money available," Greenberg said.
Whether it's due to belt-tightening or the promise of federal student loan forgiveness, suddenly families are paying closer attention to financial aid for college. Of those parents with college-bound students who didn't plan on applying for federal aid, 58% have now changed their minds, according to a new report by Discover Student Loans. That's where the Free Application for Federal Student Aid comes in. "You want to maximize that free money first," such as scholarships and grants, said Sallie Mae spokesman Rick Castellano, "before you borrow." For the 2023-2024 school year, the FAFSA filing season opens on Oct. 1 — and the sooner students file, the better.
