Another alleged cartel leader, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, 38, was also arrested, he said. But Zambada didn’t know US investigators had exploited a rift in the Sinaloa cartel and Guzman Lopez was helping with Zambada’s capture, the official said. Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, a historic leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, left, and Joaquín Guzmán López, a son of another infamous cartel leader, after they were arrested by US authorities in Texas, the US Justice Department said Thursday. “Ismael Mario Zambada Garcia is the long-time leader of the Zambada Garcia faction of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Oil exports from Russia dropped to their lowest level in seven months. Crude oil exports peaked in April and have fallen 620,000 barrels a day since. AdvertisementRussian oil exports have dropped to the lowest levels since December. The drop in exports of Russian crude oil also comes amid recent sanctions from Ukraine against Russian oil supplier Lukoil, which has diverted some oil flows to European countries like Hungary and Slovakia. Those sanctions are driving refiners in some countries, like those in India, to refuse deliveries of Russian oil.

BERLIN, GERMANY - SEPTEMBER 04: The Delivery Hero office photographed on September 04, 2020 in Berlin, Germany. (Photo by Jeremy Moeller/Getty Images)BRUSSELS - EU antitrust regulators on Tuesday launched an investigation into German online food takeaway firm Delivery hero and its Spanish unit Glovo on concerns that the two companies may have taken part in an online food delivery cartel. Delivery Hero held a minority share in Glovo in 2018 and acquired sole control in July 2022. "The Commission is concerned that, before the takeover, Delivery Hero and Glovo may have allocated geographic markets and shared commercially sensitive information," the EU watchdog said. "Online food delivery is a fast-growing sector, where we must protect competition," EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.

CNN —When two US avocado inspectors were assaulted and detained at a police roadblock in the Mexican state of Michoacán last month, it sparked a costly international crisis. ‘Green gold’Avocados, the creamy fruit with the industry nickname “green gold,” are big business. Nearly three-quarters of Mexican avocados come from Michoacán, a state along the country’s Pacific coast with a volcanic belt running through it that makes its soil ideal for farming. The office of the Michoacán state prosecutor told CNN last month that they’ve opened an investigation into the incident. In 2022, exports of Mexican avocados were similarly halted for several days after one of the US inspectors working in Michoacán received a threatening phone call.

U.S. crude oil rose 1 % on Friday, topping $83 per barrel as consumer prices eased and inventories fall. The recent oil rally has stalled out with West Texas Intermediate largely flat this week, ahead 0.38%, after booking four-straight weeks of gains. U.S. crude oil and gasoline inventories also fell for the week ended July 5, in a sign that summer fuel demand may be finding some life. OPEC and the International Energy Agency once again sent conflicting demand signals. JPMorgan sees a global oil demand gain of 1.4 million bpd this year.

Crude oil futures rose Thursday as inflation eased, bolstering hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates later this year. Lower interest rates typically stimulate economic growth, which can bolster crude oil demand. The inflation and interest rate outlook overshadowed mixed signals on oil demand for this year. The IEA is forecasting global oil demand growth will average just under 1 million bpd in 2024 due to subpar economic growth, greater energy efficiency and electric vehicle adoption. OPEC, on the other hand, is much more bullish, forecasting demand growth of 2.2 million bpd as the cartel sees solid economic growth of 2.9% this year.

Oil prices held firm Wednesday as OPEC sees solid demand supported by stronger economic growth this year. OPEC maintained its oil demand growth forecast of 2.2 million barrels per day for 2024. Here are today's energy prices:The oil market is waiting to see if U.S. inventory data will confirm expectations that the market is tightening. Summer fuel demand has had a soft start, but a big draw of 12.2 million barrels of crude and 2.2 million barrels of gasoline for the week ended June 28 indicated that activity was picking up. Analysts polled by Reuters expect crude stocks fell by 1.3 million barrels last week, and gasoline inventories declined by 600,000 barrels.

The nature of illegal lockouts means they are hard to track directly. One of the responding officers calls a sergeant over, who says there's nothing else they can do. While only 14% of lockout calls led to a police report, 86% of calls about shoplifting did. As they walk over, one of the officers tells the other to look up "illegal lockout" on his phone. A 2006 bill that would have defined illegal lockouts for all Illinois residents was defeated.

CNN —At least 19 bodies were discovered on Monday in an abandoned truck in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, near the border with Guatemala, according to the state’s attorney general. Five of the bodies had gunshot wounds and all were wearing dark clothing and tactical vests containing ammunition, authorities said. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador attributed the deaths to cartel violence and said some of the victims were migrants from Guatemala. Well, drug trafficking and the trafficking of migrants, meaning human trafficking, it’s a route,” Lopez Obrador said Tuesday during his daily press conference. Violence has been on the rise in Chiapas as cartels fight for control of lucrative routes for smuggling migrants and drugs.

CNN —President Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump, are set to make history on CNN Thursday night as they meet for their first 2024 debate. Thursday’s debate will be the earliest in the election cycle that a presidential debate featuring the major parties’ nominees has taken place in modern history. That’s why Trump’s advisers and allies have urged the former president to focus on issues like the economy, crime and inflation as he debates Biden. The Biden campaign knows all this, of course, so it will be interesting – and instructive – to hear his message and analyze where it’s being targeted. The Trump campaign distanced itself, in part, from the plan, noting that the advisers who wrote it are not on the payroll.

Many merchants and trade groups including the National Retail Federation opposed the accord, saying card fees would remain too high, while Visa and Mastercard would retain too much control over card transactions. The decision could force Visa and Mastercard to negotiate a settlement more favorable to merchants, or go to trial. Visa and Mastercard said they were disappointed with the outcome. Some U.S. senators have promoted legislation, the Credit Card Competition Act, to let merchants use other payment networks to process Visa and Mastercard transactions. The judge's decision does not affect an earlier $5.6 billion class action swipe fee settlement among Visa, Mastercard and about 12 million merchants.

Oil demand will rise for another 10 years, though producers are pulling back on new investment. The bank estimated oil demand would peak around 110 million barrels a day in 2034. AdvertisementThe global oil market could run into a supply shortage as peak demand is still a decade away, according to Goldman Sachs analysts. That's due to rising oil demand in Asia and increasing demand for petroleum products, the analysts said. "While peak oil demand is still a decade away, capital is slowing for the production of crude oil and oil products, contributing to constrained supply in the medium term," they later added.

A US-based lawyer who has represented accused Chinese money launderers said the tempo of law enforcement operations against the alleged launderers has increased in recent weeks as federal agents close in on “bigger fish” among Chinese money launderers in the US. None of the federal law enforcement agencies involved in tracking Chinese money launderers agreed to be interviewed on the record. Grassley and Whitehouse have each introduced legislation they say is key to closing loopholes in US law that are actively exploited by the cartels’ money launderers. Elaborate networksRecent court documents illuminate how far-flung and elaborate US-based networks of alleged Chinese money launderers are. Mirror TransactionsExperts say the Chinese money launderers have mastered the art of so-called mirror transactions, which involve a series of deposits at multiple bank accounts to conceal the drug money.

Mexican cartels are exploiting timeshare scams, targeting older Americans for over $300 million. Cartels often conduct "extensive research on their potential victims" before the scam, the FBI said. The Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Gulf Cartel, and the Sinaloa Cartel — which El Chapo once led — have all dabbled in online scams, the FBI says. Their scam of choice appears to be timeshare fraud, targeting mostly older Americans to the tune of over $300 million in the last five years.

Sony Pictures Entertainment is acquiring Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and will manage its 35 locations, a rare example of a traditional Hollywood studio’s owning a theater chain. The deal, announced Wednesday, followed the Justice Department’s decision in 2020 to rescind the so-called Paramount consent decrees — movie distribution rules dating to 1949 that forced the largest Hollywood studios to sell off their theater holdings. Those rules were intended to prevent studios from controlling the film business, from creation to exhibition. In recent years, Netflix, the leading streaming company, has bought theaters to show films. Alamo, the seventh-largest theater chain in North America, operates theaters in 25 metro areas across the United States and has invested in distinctive programming and food offerings in an attempt to lure in moviegoers away from major multiplexes.

The decision by OPEC+ to increase oil production will cast a "bearish shadow" over oil prices for the next two years, creating a level of uncertainty not seen since the pandemic severely disrupted demand, according to Deutsche Bank. It is "inconceivable that the market could absorb anything close" to 2.2 million bpd, Deutsche Bank analyst Michael Hsueh told clients in a note Wednesday. The supply increase is similar in magnitude to the 2.3 million bpd oversupply during the first year of the pandemic in 2020, Hsueh wrote. The policy shift by OPEC+ "marks the end of the tightening cycle that began in October 2022," Hsueh said. The supply deficit of 500,000 bpd this quarter will rise to 1 million bpd in the third quarter before the OPEC+ production increases start, according to Deutsche.

In a village in the hills of Guerrero State, residents ran from their homes as drones flew overhead, dropping makeshift bombs. This violence is the most formidable challenge that Claudia Sheinbaum, whom the nation has just elected by a huge margin to be its first female president, will have to confront when she takes power in October. The run-up to the election was one of the most violent campaigns in Mexico’s recent history. Ms. Sheinbaum did not put this bloodshed at the core of her campaign. Mexico's drug cartels and gangs appear to be playing a wider role than before in Sunday's elections that will determine the presidency, nine governorships and about 19,000 mayorships and other local posts. The country's powerful drug cartels have long staged targeted assassinations of mayoral and other local candidates who threaten their control. Security analyst David Saucedo says it's likely some drug gangs will try to force voters to cast ballots for their favored candidates. "It it is reasonable to assume that the cartels will mobilize their support bases during Sunday's elections," Saucedo said. While they did not say who was behind the attack, the town is completely dominated by two warring drug cartels, Jalisco and Sinaloa.

But it’s not just the massive scale of the event that makes it so important in the eyes of observers across the border in the United States. Key to facilitating this shift was the creation of the USMCA trade agreement, which came into effect in 2020 between Mexico, the United States and Canada. “Mexico committed to addressing the two main Mexican issues affecting the United States and that will determine the next election: migration and fentanyl. “But the United States also has to dismantle the network of traffickers within (its own borders). There is a significant network of organized crime in the United States that the administration must arrest, bring to trial, and whose activities it must restrict,” she added.

New York CNN —Congressional Democrats are investigating whether leading US oil companies have illegally colluded with one another and with OPEC to inflate prices at the pump, CNN has learned. The Federal Trade Commission earlier this month accused Sheffield, the founder of Pioneer Natural Resources, of conspiring with OPEC and its allies to boost prices. Pallone argued that public data suggests US oil producers did not ramp up drilling during the period that Sheffield was trying to influence his rivals. Pallone sent Exxon additional document demands, including communications between Pioneer employees who were involved in developing production plans and representatives of OPEC and OPEC+.
