To see the impact of higher inflation and higher interest rates on companies, just look at the earnings release for CarMax this morning. For example, higher rates are generally bad for REITs beause REITs rely on debt financing. Higher rates also mean increased borrowing costs for utilities, which carry a lot of debt because they use a lot of capital. The problem is, energy and material stocks have already been rising due to higher oil and a still strong economy. Other potential beneficiaries of higher rates with a strong economy are defensive stocks, which tend to be less interest rate sensitive, like Kroger or Walmart .

But a resurgence in the industry could complicate the Federal Reserve’s ongoing inflation fight, either delaying the first interest rate cut or resulting in fewer cuts this year, some economists say. Interest rates have been at a two-decade high since July, after the Fed raised rates aggressively over the prior year and a half. The economy picking up further strength would spook Wall Street because of what it means for interest rates — and some manufacturers say they’re optimistic about the future. JPMorgan added two new names to its list of top stocks as April begins — Bank of America and CarMax . However, his price target of $35 implies that shares could fall 8% from their Thursday close. On the other hand, analyst Rajat Gupta views CarMax as a short idea, with his $60 price target suggesting approximately 31% downside from where the stock closed on Thursday. Here are some of the top picks that made JPMorgan's list: Growth stock Danaher is one returning name to the list. But what if I told you this group shrunk its share count dramatically since 2019? The numbers tell the story: Lennar now has 276 million shares outstanding, down from 318 million five years ago. Other than Toll, most of the homebuilder management teams do not emphasize this fundamental change in share count. Management has been buying hand over fist since 2019, shrinking the share count to 215 million from 264 million. My rather unassailable conclusion is pretty simple: Check the share count before you buy a stock.

I owned the Fisker Ocean. It was a nightmare.

Earlier this year, YouTuber Marques Brownlee said the Fisker Ocean was the "worst car I've ever reviewed." I thought the Fisker Ocean was a great option, based on the price and a nice marketing message around the sustainability of the vehicle. I reported the issue to Fisker right away and I struggled to get them to come out and service it. FiskerAt first, Fisker sent out a roadside assistance guy to jump the car and the car wouldn't jump. Regarding the owner's seat-sensor issue, the Fisker spokesperson said the seat sensor was a "routine fix for some early vehicles."

Their huge and growing earnings, combined with a large number of shares outstanding, mean that the three companies exert a bigger influence on the S & P 500 earnings picture than any other. Fourth quarter earnings for the entire S & P 500 are expected to rise about 5% over the same period in 2022. For share-weighted earnings, the earnings (or earnings estimates) for each company are multiplied by the shares outstanding. What this means is that companies that are experiencing a rapid increase in their earnings can begin to exert an outsized influence on S & P 500 earnings. In a world where the S & P 500 is expected to see earnings growth of 10% this year, Nvidia's earnings growth is off the charts.

Fourth-quarter earnings season is kicking off with a mix of good and bad news. Without those six stocks, the rest of the S & P is expected to see earnings fall 6%. There's a lot riding on earnings in 2024 For the S & P 500 to increase in 2024, earnings need to expand. But with the S & P 500 up over 20% last year, the forward earnings multiple is roughly 19.6, in the very pricey range. What little suspense is left in the year revolves around whether the S & P 500 can close at a historic high. Closing the year at a historic high is a fairly rare event — it's only happened eight times since 1926, and only four times since 1963, according to S & P Global: 2020, 2013, 1999, 1991, 1963, 1958, 1954, 1928. So far, the S & P is up 0.9% in these first four of the seven days. The S & P internals are almost the opposite of where they were a year ago. A few days ago, S & P noted that the S & P 500 total return of 25.85% would only be up 9.49% ex the Magnificent 7. If you own the S & P 500 long-term, you are participating in those gains. The S & P is up 1,200 points (25%) since then and is knocking on the door of an historic high. The S & P 500 is overbought and expensive on most metrics. The S & P 500 up almost 25% in a year is the kind of problem a lot of people would be happy to have.

CarMax in 2021 launched nationally an online tool that provides instant offers to car owners for their vehicles. Photo: Mark Felix/Bloomberg NewsDuring the pandemic, auto dealers rushed to buy used cars off the street as vehicle production declined amid supply-chain shortages. They also have bolstered dealers’ profit margins while allowing some to cut prices, as the vehicles they purchase directly from consumers are often cheaper. Inventory pressures have eased in recent months, but dealers continue to focus on street purchases because they are more lucrative than buying cars at wholesale auctions, where dealers bid up prices and pay fees and transportation costs. A street purchase is different from a trade-in, where dealers purchase a car at the same time they sell a new one.

Amazon next year will allow auto dealers to sell cars through its site, starting with South Korean automaker Hyundai, the company said Thursday. Beginning in 2024, Amazon will let shoppers purchase a new car online, then pick it up or have it delivered by their local dealership. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the partnership with Hyundai will change "the ease with which customers can buy vehicles online." Shares of used car dealers such as Carmax and Carvana as well as the country's largest publicly traded new car dealers Lithia Motors and AutoNation fell following the announcement. Tesla and other electric vehicle startups such as Rivian have developed workarounds in many states to sell vehicles directly online to consumers.

CEO of used-car retailer CarMax , Bill Nash, told CNBC's Jim Cramer it's "a little early" to tell what effect the United Autoworkers Union strike will have on his company's business. "I think as far as the UAW strike [is concerned], it's a little early to tell the impact it's going to have on the business — you know, it really depends on how long it goes, and if there's going to be an expansion," Nash said. The UAW began its strike on three Detroit automakers — Ford Motor , Stellantis and General Motors — last month. CarMax will continue to monitor the strike, Nash said, but added so far it hasn't played into the overall industry. Nash also discussed how inflation and high interest rates are affecting customers looking to buy both newer and older models.
