A shooting at a Northside Hospital medical office in Atlanta this week left one woman dead and four injured. Photo: Megan Varner/Getty ImagesATLANTA—The deadly medical-office shooting here earlier this week highlighted a growing concern in the healthcare industry and state governments: violence in medical facilities. On May 3, a man opened fire with a handgun in the waiting room on the 11th floor of Northside Medical Midtown, a medical office building, according to Atlanta police. Brian Kemp had signed a new law, which partially took effect May 2, allowing hospital systems to establish their own campus police forces. Other states have also passed bills aimed at preventing attacks and increasing penalties for assaults, and more are in the works.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis with members of her team last year. Photo: Ben Gray/Associated PressThe Georgia prosecutor investigating former President Donald Trump has reached immunity deals with at least eight Republican Party activists who helped his unsuccessful effort to falsely be declared the state’s winner in the 2020 presidential election, a lawyer for the so-called fake electors revealed in a Friday court filing. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis extended the immunity offers to eight of the activists last month, and all eight accepted, according to a court filing from defense lawyer Kimberly Bourroughs Debrow.
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has tried to secure passage of legislation that he says could reduce the chances of mass shootings in the future. Photo: Mark Zaleski/Associated PressNASHVILLE, Tenn.—The GOP-dominated Tennessee legislature appeared likely to wind down its session without taking up a measure to tighten gun-control laws following a mass shooting here, despite a late plea by Republican Gov. Mr. Lee backed a proposal that would allow police to ask a civil-court judge to remove firearms from people who were at risk of hurting themselves or others. As of Thursday evening, the legislation supported by Mr. Lee hasn’t been attached to existing bills and it hadn’t come up for discussion in any committees.

Mr. Lee backed a proposal that would have allowed police to ask a civil court judge to remove firearms from people who were at risk of hurting themselves or others. Republican leadership blocked it in both chambers, leaving it without a sponsor or a bill number by the time the General Assembly adjourned Friday evening.
Photo: Brandon Dill/Associated PressThe mother of Tyre Nichols, the Memphis man who died in January after being beaten by police during a traffic stop, on Wednesday sued the city of Memphis, its police chief and others, including the former officers now facing murder charges in Mr. Nichols’s death. In the 139-page complaint, RowVaughn Wells said her 29-year-old son was killed in “a gruesome, barbaric display of police brutality on the streets of a quiet neighborhood in Memphis.” The complaint stated that Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis exercised poor training and oversight of officers and fostered an attitude among officers that they were above the law.
