Schwarzenegger gave bronze eagle sculptures to his visitors at a video production company in Santa Monica, just west of Los Angeles. Israel says Hamas, the militant group that rules Gaza, took 240 hostages in the Oct. 7 attack that also killed 1,200 people and set off a Middle East war. DeSantis has also taunted Newsom to "throw his hat in the ring" and run for president in 2024 against President Joe Biden. Despite weak poll numbers and questions, including from some Democrats, about his age, Biden has stuck to his plan to seek a second term after clearing the field of serious Democratic primary challengers when he announced in April that he was running again. Biden loyalists, citing his record in office, argue that the party does not need a backup plan to defeat probable Republican nominee Donald Trump, who Biden beat in the 2020 election. To the chagrin of the White House, Biden's age has become a defining part of the 2024 campaign. "If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. In 1972, then Senator George Eagleton withdrew as Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern's vice presidential running mate after revelations of his treatment for depression forced him out of the race.

It's a high-risk gambit for the Florida governor, Republican strategists said. They insist Newsom could be a presidential contender as early as next year, though the governor has pledged to stand behind Biden's bid. "Ron DeSantis looks forward to sharing the stark contrast between his vision to revive our nation and Newsom's blueprint for failure," DeSantis campaign manager James Uthmeier said in an email. Nathan Click, a Newsom adviser, said his team was "shocked" when DeSantis agreed to the California governor's proposal to debate. The Trump campaign did not comment on the debate.

Images: AP/Composite: Mark KellyThe 2024 election will probably be preceded by another flood of lawsuits over voting rules, especially absentee ballots, and keep an eye on Pennsylvania. Last week a federal judge there ruled that timely mail ballots must be counted even if the voter neglected to write the date, as state law requires. This may go to the Supreme Court, which punted a similar case last year. The saga of Pennsylvania’s undated ballots since the Covid pandemic is worth unspooling, because it shows how litigation puts indeterminacy into the election system.

During that time, Rosalynn Carter sought to support her husband by speaking in 112 cities in 34 states during a 44-day tour. In the White House, she became honorary chair of the President's Commission on Mental Health, key to passage of a 1980 act that helped fund local mental health centers.

They must also rebuild the essential habits of cooperation to address the existential challenges that have arisen. However, this deep-rooted reliance underscores their vulnerability to disruptions and uncertainties in the ever-shifting landscape of U.S.-China relations.
