[1/4] Liquified petroleum gas vessel Zita Schulte is seen docked at the port of Corpus Christi, Texas, U.S., May 15, 2023. A hydrogen hub would require access to millions of gallons of water – a challenge in Corpus Christi which is experiencing a multi-year drought. Peter Zanoni, the city manager for Corpus Christi, said the hydrogen project, if approved, all but requires the adoption of seawater desalination. And seawater desalination plants are energy intensive and expensive to build and maintain, energy experts say. Corpus Christi first proposed seawater desalination in 2017 to supply its rapidly growing energy and petrochemicals industries.

The $42 billion in federal funding under the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment Program is based on a newly released Federal Communications Commission coverage map that details gaps in access. Texas and California - the two most populous U.S. states - top the funding list at $3.1 billion and $1.9 billion, respectively. But other less populous states like Virginia, Alabama and Louisiana cracked the top 10 list for funding due to lack of broadband access. The administration estimates there are some 8.5 million locations in the U.S. that lack access to broadband connections. The lack of broadband access drew attention during COVID shutdowns that forced students into online schooling.

A predominantly red map of California shows the 1984 presidential election results, where former U.S. President Ronald Reagan won in a landslide. Online posts are falsely saying it shows results from the 2020 general election. However, it shows results from the 1984 presidential election, where only Alameda, Marin, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, and Yolo counties voted Democrat while the rest of the state voted Republican (here). The California Secretary of State (SoS) shared the 1984 presidential election results in an email to Reuters, where the results match the map being shared online. The map shows presidential election results in California for 1984, not 2020.

Both Ford and GM EV drivers will, for now, need special adapters to allow their vehicles to use Tesla chargers. Tesla’s charging system had been proprietary and only usable by Teslas – although Teslas could use CCS chargers with an adapter. But CEO Elon Musk announced in late 2022 that he was inviting other automakers and charging companies to use Tesla’s charging system and design standards. Tesla’s NACS chargers outnumber CCS chargers in the United States by a factor of two to one, according to Tesla. Other automakers, such as KIa, Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes and Volkswagen, still use the CCS charging standard and have not announced any plans to change.

The Securities And Exchange Commission has filed lawsuits against cryptocurrency exchanges Coinbase and Binance for allegedly violating multiple securities laws. Binance announced the change late Thursday night on Twitter, and blamed the Securities and Exchange Commission's "unjustified civil claims against our business." Binance's banking transactions are the center of immense scrutiny by the SEC, which filed a civil complaint against the exchange and its founder, Changpeng Zhao, alleging both violated U.S. securities laws. But it suggests that Binance's banking partners have decided the exchange is too risky a client to keep on, and that the revelations from the SEC case have grown too significant to ignore. Multiple banking partners had already stopped serving Binance, and it wasn't immediately clear which banking partners Binance retained.

Kurt Cobain's smashed Fender Stratocaster guitar sold at auction for $595,900, more than 10 times its original estimate. The Nirvana frontman's iconic left-handed electric guitar was smashed while the grunge pioneers were making their seminal Nevermind album in the early 1990s. Reassembled but unplayable, it was expected to sell for between $60,000 and $80,000 at the Julien's auction at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York over the weekend. According to Julien's Auctions, Cobain gave the guitar to Lanegan during Nirvana's Nevermind tour in 1992. The guitar Cobain played during a legendary live acoustic concert on MTV Unplugged in 1993, just five months before his death, was sold two years ago for $6 million.
According to the industry analysis firm's report, Tesla's average installations per week were 21 in 2022, far lower than the company's 1,000-per-week target for 2021. loadingWood Mackenzie said its analysis on Tesla's Solar Roof relies on data from several states, but it captures the largest markets such as California - the state where most of the roofs have been installed - and "paints an accurate national picture". "GAF Energy's Timberline Solar roofing system is better-positioned to achieve widespread adoption," said Max Issokson, analyst at Wood Mackenzie. The potential of Tesla's Solar Roof will rely on the company's ability to simplify and streamline installations and tap into a broader customer base, Issokson added. Solar Roof and GAF Energy's Timberline Solar, which was launched last year, are roofing shingles that can produce solar power.

Jan 31 (Reuters) - Solar panels and home batteries have soared in popularity because they allow consumers to generate and store their own carbon-free power and save on their electricity bills. When used this way, they are called virtual power plants, or VPPs. "Virtual power plants are at the center of that." U.S. solar companies including Sunrun Inc (RUN.O) and SunPower Corp (SPWR.O) have pooled some of their customers' systems into virtual power plants in California, Hawaii and New England. Sunrun last year, for example, operated a virtual power plant with thousands of homes in New England that provided 1.8 gigawatt-hours to the grid during June through August.

Jan 9 (Reuters) - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promised help to repair homes, replace property and rebuild infrastructure as he toured remote flood-ravaged communities across the northwest after "1-in-100-year" floods. Albanese announced on Monday A$10,000 ($6,900) for home repair and up to A$10,000 to replace household goods. "There's going to be massive infrastructure investment required," Albanese told radio station 6PR on Monday from Broome, roughly 2,000 kilometres northwest of state capital Perth. "I'm afraid I've now been to Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and now WA (Western Australia) in the relatively short time that I've been Prime Minister... talking about a 1-in-100-year event over and over again," Albanese said. Military aircraft helped airlift supplies and evacuate residents in cut-off towns such as Fitzroy Crossing, home to roughly 1,000.
Apple announces plans to encrypt iCloud backups

(Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)Apple announced on Wednesday that it plans to allow users to encrypt additional kinds of iCloud data on its servers, including full backups, photos and notes. Encrypted backups will be opt-in, according to Apple, and will be available in the U.S. before the end of the year. While Apple has previously encrypted a lot of data it stores on servers, entire device backups that included text messages, contacts, and other important data were not end-to-end encrypted, and Apple previously had access to the contents of the backups. It also means that user data content would not be exposed if Apple's servers were ever breached. At the time, Apple said that an unencrypted iCloud backup on its servers was an option to get the same data.

All this will be washed down by wines from California - Newton "Unfiltered" Chardonnay and Anakota "Knights Valley" Cabernet Sauvignon, along with a California sparkling wine with French roots, Roederer Estate Brut Rose. Serving American-made wine to official French visitors is not original to Biden. Outside the United States, countries including India are also beginning to increase the use of recharge ponds to store water in natural or human-made aquifers. While the idea of storing water underground is not new, a recent California law regulating groundwater use has spurred a spate of projects that the state is helping to fund. The new pond, on about 20 acres of former farmland , will help to guide water underground to store it for residents as well as agriculture. Since then the state's population has nearly doubled to 40 million residents.
