And it’s particularly notable after the Republican party’s high-profile failure to repeal key parts of the health care law during Trump’s first term in office. “Health care reform is going to be a big part of the agenda,” Johnson said at the event. And he said it wouldn’t just be health care getting a massive “free market” overhaul. “We know they’ll do it because I’m convinced that if Roe v. Wade can fall, then anything can fall.”The once-contentious health care law has not been a major theme of the 2024 campaign. Taking a different tact than his previous campaigns, Trump himself has stressed to voters that he wouldn’t eliminate the health care law.

Ballot drop boxes in Portland, Oregon, and neighboring Vancouver, Washington, were set on fire early Monday morning, police said, just over a week out from Election Day. The Portland Police Bureau said an "incendiary device" was placed inside of a sidewalk ballot box in the Central City district. At around 4 a.m. local time, about a half-hour after the reported fire in Portland, police in Vancouver also responded to a ballot box fire. Earlier this month, the Vancouver bomb squad responded to reports of a "suspicious device" near a downtown ballot box, police said. The device was "safely removed" and the ballot box itself was "not compromised," according to a news release.

Beyond the two endorsements Harris received that got national attention, several other local Republicans, from former sheriffs to members of the Legislature, have backed Harris in recent weeks. “I was a Republican even before Donald Trump started spray tanning,” Cheney joked during her first visit last month in Ripon. “Our Republicans for Harris program is taking that unifying, inspiring message to anti-Trump Republicans, moderates, and independents,” Austin Weatherford, the national Republican engagement director for the Harris campaign, said in a statement. Several other Wisconsin Republicans have joined the effort backing Harris in recent weeks, including former state Assembly member Sheehan Donoghue and Steve Michek, the former sheriff of rural Iowa County. “I am terrified of Donald Trump becoming our next president for all the reasons I have indicated: He’s already been impeached twice.

Malaysia is working toward having the "the right ingredients" to finally claim "Asian Tiger" status, but must avoid the traps of widening inequality seen elsewhere. That's according to Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour, the governor of the central bank of Malaysia, who believes the southeast Asian country must avoid a "boom-bust cycle that has happened before." But it may be a case of better late than never, thanks to better-than-expected economic growth this year. CNN —Two more members of the Los Angeles Times editorial board resigned Thursday after the newspaper’s owner blocked an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, a contentious decision that has engulfed the publication in turmoil. Robert Greene, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial writer, resigned from his position over billionaire Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong’s decision to veto the planned endorsement, he confirmed to CNN. CNN —Moldova’s crucial referendum on joining the European Union is too close to call, partial results showed Monday, as President Maia Sandu condemned an “unprecedented assault” on the country’s democracy. With just over 1.4% of ballots still to be counted, 50.2% had voted “yes” in the referendum, according to the country’s Central Election Commission. The tight margin would come as a blow to Sandu, who had been hoping for a clear endorsement of the pro-EU path she has charted during her first presidential term. Vadim Ghirda/APCNN reported last week on the efforts of a Kremlin-linked network, spearheaded by the exiled Moldovan oligarch Ilan Shor, to buy votes in Moldova, aiming to sway the results of the EU referendum. Dallas AP —Texas has sued a Dallas doctor over accusations of providing gender-affirming care to youths, marking one of the first times a state has sought to enforce recent bans driven by Republicans. The Texas law prevents transgender people under 18 from accessing hormone therapies, puberty blockers and transition surgeries, though surgical procedures are rarely performed on children. Children’s Health said in a statement that it “follows and adheres to all state health care laws.”At least 26 states have adopted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, and most of those states face lawsuits. The lawsuit comes just weeks before an election in which Republicans have used support of gender-affirming health care as a way to attack their opponents. There are two things that could go wrong in the economy that could lead to a recession, Morgan Stanley said. AdvertisementThe US economy appears on track to keep growing, but there are two things that could spoil the no-recession forecast on Wall Street, according to Morgan Stanley. A slowdown, then people get laid off, laid off people spend less, the economy slows down more, and it snowballs," he added. "So that's another place where I think we could be wrong," Carpenter said of his recession forecast, though he reiterated that a downturn wasn't his baseline view. And if anything, where we were wrong with our forecast so far is that things have turned out even better than we dare hoped," Carpenter added.

When the wearer falls over, an extra pair of limbs can extend out to provide leverage to help them stand, conserving energy for other tasks. But the surveys also reveal a noticeable gap in support between the pro-abortion rights amendments and the Democratic presidential and Senate candidates who are campaigning on a pro-abortion rights platform. Pro-abortion rights ballot measures won in every state where they appeared on the ballot, including conservative-leaning ones, in the 2022 and 2023 elections. Similarly in Arizona, a proposed amendment to enshrine abortion rights in the state’s constitution has clear majority support. In Montana, there’s little evidence that the presence of an abortion rights amendment has had a major effect on the race between three-term Democratic Sen. Jon Tester and Republican challenger Tim Sheehy. For example, in Missouri, public polling indicates broad support for a constitutional amendment to enshrine abortion rights, while Republican Sen. Josh Hawley and Trump hold strong leads in their races.
