Mr. Trump is likely to face charges next month stemming from his efforts to overturn President Biden’s 2020 victory in Georgia, and has been notified that he could be indicted soon on federal charges for clinging to power after his electoral defeat. Yet he remains the prohibitive leader in state and national polling, with Mr. DeSantis a distant second and the rest of the field clustered in single digits. Over the next month, political observers will see a steady taunting of the front-runner by candidates who see a no-lose scenario. Either they goad Mr. Trump to share the stage with them, giving them equal billing with the front-runner and a chance to take a shot at him, or they paint him as too scared to show up, denting his tough-guy image. On CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Mr. Christie promised, “I’ll be on this stage for all of the debates, and I will hold Donald Trump personally responsible for failing us.”

George Maharis, the ruggedly handsome New York-born stage actor who went on to become a 1960s television heartthrob as a star of the series “Route 66,” died on Wednesday at at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. His friend Marc Bahan announced his death on Facebook. Mr. Maharis’s greatest fame arose from the role of Buz Murdock, one of two young men who traveled the country in a Corvette convertible, finding a new adventure and drama (and usually a new young woman) each week on CBS’s “Route 66.”In a 2012 reappraisal of the show, the New York Times critic and reporter Neil Genzlinger praised the literary quality of the scripts and commented, “This half-century-old black-and-white television series tackled issues that seem very 21st century.”

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy said Congress should look at paring back expenditures incurred by every federal department. President Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy plan to meet at the White House on Wednesday as Republican lawmakers push to tie spending cuts to an increase in the debt ceiling. Mr. McCarthy, who unveiled the timing of the previously announced meeting in an interview Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” said lawmakers should implement a plan to cut spending and lower the country’s future debt load and not simply raise the existing $31.4 trillion borrowing limit.
The Paul Ehrlich Apocalypse Is Back

We’ll say this for Paul Ehrlich —at least he’s consistent. In 1968 the Stanford biologist famously declared that “the battle to feed all humanity is over,” at a time when the earth’s population was about 3.5 billion. Today we have a population of eight billion (better fed than ever), yet there was Mr. Ehrlich, on CBS’s “60 Minutes” Sunday night, still predicting that “humanity is very busily sitting on a limb that we’re sawing off.”The CBS narrator acknowledged that the green revolution in agriculture disproved Mr. Ehrlich’s prediction of mass famine. But the show went on to suggest that Mr. Ehrlich’s repackaged gloom about melting icecaps and the rate of extinction may finally prove him right in saying we are still heading the way of the dinosaurs.
The famous British economist John Maynard Keynes coined the phrase “animal spirits” to describe what drives investors, consumers and business leaders. “At the end of the day, a recession is a loss of faith,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. Yellen explained this week that recession risks permanently exist. “There are always risks of a recession,” Yellen told CBS’s “60 Minutes” in an interview that aired on Sunday. Hopefully we don’t lose faith and run for the bunker and go into recession.”— CNN’s Elizabeth Yang contributed to this report.
New York CNN —Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is striking a cautiously optimistic tone about 2023, predicting a major inflation cooldown and stressing that a recession isn’t required to get prices back under control. “I hope that it will be short-lived,” Yellen said of the current period of high inflation. “We learned a lot of lessons from the high inflation we experienced in the 1970s. Yellen conceded a recession is possible in the months ahead — though the former Fed chair emphasized that one isn’t required to tame inflation. “There’s a risk of a recession,” Yellen said.
There have been nearly 17 flu hospitalizations for every 100,000 people, rates typically seen in December or January. The cumulative hospitalization rate hasn’t been this high at this point in the season in more than a decade. Less than two months in, the RSV hospitalization rate this season is already nearing the total RSV hospitalization rate from the entire 2018-19 season. With the holiday season – and flu season – underway, Dr. Anthony Fauci warned this week of the potential for an emergency situation. “When you have very little wiggle room of intensive care beds, when you have like almost all the intensive care beds that are occupied, it’s bad for the children who have RSV and need intensive care.
And the CDC estimates that there have been at least 6.2 million illnesses, 53,000 hospitalizations and 2,900 deaths from influenza this season. Less than two months in, the RSV hospitalization rate this season is already nearing the total RSV hospitalization rate from the entire 2018-19 season. The latest surveillance data does not capture Thanksgiving week or the effects of holiday gatherings. Covid-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths reached record high levels during last year’s holiday season – and this holiday season could also bring a rise in spread. Flu shots are lagging, too, with millions fewer vaccinations at this point in the season than in the past two years.
Kelly Kahl, CBS’s head of entertainment, will leave his post at the end of the year, the company said. The top two entertainment executives at CBS are leaving as part of a broader restructuring at the network and its parent company, Paramount Global . CBS’s head of entertainment, Kelly Kahl , and his top lieutenant, Thom Sherman , will leave their posts at the end of the year, the company said.
CBS and its former president, Les Moonves, will pay $30.5 million as part of an agreement with the New York attorney general’s office, which says the network’s executives conspired with a Los Angeles police captain to conceal sexual assault allegations against Moonves. Moonves will have to pay $2.5 million, all of which will benefit stockholders who the attorney general said were initially kept in the dark about the allegations. At least one of those executives — one of the few privy to an internal investigation — sold millions in dollars of stock before the allegations against Moonves became public, which the attorney general’s office said amounted to insider trading. The captain then met personally with Moonves and another CBS executive and fed them confidential information about the investigation. The captain instructed the police officers investigating the complaint to “admonish” the woman not to go to the media with her allegations, according to the attorney general’s office.
New York CNN Business —Leslie Moonves, former chief executive officer of CBS, and CBS reached a $30.5 million settlement with the office of the attorney general of New York, Letitia James, on Wednesday. Moonves stepped down as CBS’ chief executive in 2018 following multiple sexual misconduct allegations. The exit marked the end of Moonves’ tenure atop one of the most powerful companies in the media world. Moonves denied the allegations. Moonves himself must pay $2.5 million, which will also go to CBS shareholders.
CNN —The unexpected passing of television star and social media darling Leslie Jordan has spurred a flood of heartfelt tributes. The actor died on Monday, his talent agent Sarabeth Schedeen told CNN in a statement. Jordan’s most recognizable credit was his time on “Will & Grace” as Beverley Leslie, a role he reprised throughout the show’s run, including its recent reboot. Co-star Eric McCormack posted two tributes to Jordan on his Instagram, with one showing showing the pair performing for the cameras on the show. “Crushed to learn about the loss of @thelesliejordan, the funniest and flirtiest southern gent I’ve ever known,” McCormack wrote in the caption.
“Band of Brothers” writer Bruce McKenna is teaming with David Broyles (“Six”) and Nick Jones Jr. (“Yasuke”) to write and produce a limited TV series “Buffalo Rangers” about the 2nd Ranger Company, the only all-Black special operations combat unit in U.S. history. The series is being produced by South Korea-based Moving Pictures Company, which has a growing English-language slate. Tim McCoy, a 2nd Ranger company historian for many years, will serve as a consultant to the project. The 2nd Rangers were made of volunteers from other army regiments and were commanded by Black officers. Martin Chase called the project, “a true, forgotten, classic action tale about Black men who displayed amazing courage and heroism in the face of war and seemingly insurmountable obstacles.”
Biden’s Choose-Your-Own Covid Pandemic Policy

President Biden’s answer is yes no yes no. The latest example of politically convenient pandemic schizophrenia came Thursday when the Department of Health and Human Services again extended the official public-health emergency, this time through January. “The pandemic is over,” Mr. Biden told CBS’s “60 Minutes” only three weeks ago. But the pandemic is over.” Not to get all philosophical, but how can something be an emergency if it has already ended? The HHS statement this week says “a public health emergency exists and has existed since January 27, 2020, nationwide.”
President Biden’s repeated statements that the U.S. would defend Taiwan from a Chinese attack is chipping away at longstanding American policy meant to keep the hostile sides at bay. Mr. Biden’s recent remarks that the U.S. military would intervene if Beijing attacked Taiwan were the fourth time in just over a year he made such a pledge and appeared to retreat from the policy that leaves U.S. involvement ambiguous. In an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes” aired Sunday, Mr. Biden also said Taiwan would decide itself about declaring independence—a red line Beijing has said would trigger a military assault.

Covid-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths continue, but some world leaders are signaling that the viral illness might not be a global emergency much longer. President Biden said the pandemic was over in an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes,” drawing criticism from some public-health experts. Four days prior, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the pandemic was ongoing but that its end was in sight.
Ukraine says its troops threaten Russians in Donbas

Ukrainian troops “have pushed across the Oskil. From yesterday, Ukraine controls the east bank,” the Ukrainian Armed Forces wrote on Telegram late Sunday. All of it.”President Joe Biden also said victory for Ukraine meant removing Russian forces from the entire country, and pledged U.S. support for as long as it takes. “Winning the war in Ukraine is to get Russia out of Ukraine completely and to recognize the sovereignty. Britain said Russian forces had widened strikes on civilian infrastructure following battlefield setbacks and were likely to expand their targets further.
WASHINGTON—President Biden said the Covid-19 pandemic was over, while reiterating comments that U.S. troops could defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, during a televised interview that addressed questions about whether he would seek a second term. “The pandemic is over. We still have a problem with Covid,” Mr. Biden said in an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes” airing Sunday. “We’re still doing a lot of work on it … but the pandemic is over. And so I think it’s changing.”
“I’m telling the American people that we’re going to get control of inflation,” Biden said in an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes” that aired on Sunday night. In June, the CPI reached 9.1% year over year, the highest inflation rate in more than four decades. [The] inflation rate month-to-month was just an inch, hardly at all,” he said in the interview. While declining energy prices have helped to lower the overall inflation rate, price increases for food and shelter remain stubbornly high. Still, key contributing and detracting factors of inflation remain largely beyond the control of Biden, and even the Fed.
