‘Feud: Capote vs. the Swans’ Review: Cold Blooded
  + stars: | 2024-01-31 | by ( Mike Hale | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans,” which premieres Wednesday on FX (streaming on Hulu), is something that its protagonist could not abide: a bore. The second season of the anthology series “Feud” stretches the story of Truman Capote’s falling out with the “swans” of New York society across eight episodes and more than seven hours. They have gone instead for chilly, moralistic and cautionary. “Capote vs. the Swans” feels as forbidding and vindictive as the society wives who pass judgment on Capote. An element in that affect is the fashionably fractured approach the show takes to its storytelling.

She died of lung cancer in 1978 never having spoken to Capote again. In the fall of 1955, Mrs. Woodward shot and killed her husband at their estate in Oyster Bay, in the middle of the night, believing that he was a burglar. Capote decided it was not, even though someone eventually pleaded guilty to trying to rob the Woodward house on the night of the shooting. In mid-October, just as Capote’s story was set to drop, Mrs. Woodward killed herself in her uptown apartment. While she had had a difficult life and there was no way to know why she did it, many speculated about the correlation.

Rochester, New Hampshire CNN —Bonnie Cote never considered voting for anyone other than former President Donald Trump. Despite months of campaigning and millions spent on ads, mailers and door knocking in the Granite State, some Trump supporters said they were unfamiliar with Haley. “Everybody came out for Trump, Trump, Trump… so, why not go for Trump?”Kirwin said she thought Trump was “a little crazy” and his found his personality “awful,” but she also recalled watching him in the first 2016 general election debate against Hillary Clinton. “And make no mistake, we will restore our national pride.”It’s an argument that has worked on some former Trump voters. A federal appeals court Tuesday upheld a lifetime ban on "pharma bro" Martin Shkreli from working in the pharmaceuticals industry as well as an order to pay up to $64.6 million in disgorged profits for blocking competition to the drug Daraprim. His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, in a statement to CNBC on the appeals court decision, said, "The lifetime ban is too severe." In its eight-page ruling, the appeals court noted that Shkreli argued that Manhattan federal court Judge Denise Cote "abused" her discretion in imposing a lifetime ban on him from the drug business. "The district court found, and Shkreli does not dispute, that Shkreli's illegal scheme was "egregious, deliberate, repetitive, long-running, and ultimately dangerous." "Given his strategic decision in the district court, there is no injustice to Shkreli by us declining to address his new argument."

Read previewA plane carrying a national soccer team had to make an emergency landing Wednesday due to an oxygen shortage on board, The Gambia Football Federation said in a statement. The Gambia team's coach, Tom Saintfiet, told the BBC he believed the squad "could have died." "We all fell asleep because there was a lack of oxygen — some of the players couldn't be woken up," he added. But it couldn't take off again as the crew timed out because the soccer team had arrived four hours late at the airport, according to the airline. The Gambia squad returned to their hotel before flying to the Ivory Coast on a different plane, an Airbus A319, the following day.

US oil production reached an all-time high last week at 13.2 million barrels per day. If this trend continues, "millions of people will die," Stanford climate scientist Rob Jackson said. And it conflicts with oft-repeated Republican talking points of a Biden "war on American energy." Weekly domestic oil production has doubled from the first week in October 2012 to now. United States domestic oil production hit an all-time high last week, contrasting with efforts to slice heat-trapping carbon emissions by the Biden administration and world leaders. Weekly domestic oil production has doubled from the first week in October 2012 to now. White House officials have long considered increased oil production inside the United States as a bridge to help soften the transition to renewable energy sources. She said U.S. oil is less carbon-intensive than other oil, an argument the UAE’s oil company also makes. “Demand drives production — we need to change the whole system to reduce oil demand.”“Replacing oil in power production is a lot easier than replacing oil in transportation,” Gross said in an email.

CNN —You’d be forgiven for thinking the resurgence of airships and blimps was a load of hot air. South African startup Cloudline has received millions of dollars in investment for its mini blimps. Cloudline first received venture capital backing in 2019, and after years of research and development and prototyping, the company is preparing to launch commercial operations. “The ability of companies like Cloudline to expand is highly subject to the complexity of regulations experienced across the continent,” Chokossa adds. However it looks to fill its airships, Cloudline is hoping it can break through in this revived transport sector.

NEW YORK (AP) — More than 30 Atlantic countries on four continents committed Monday to bolster coordination on economic development, environmental protection, maritime issues and more, the White House said. The adoption of the Declaration on Atlantic Cooperation was completed Monday evening at a meeting hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken ahead of the start of the annual U.N. General Assembly meeting. The White House pitched the forum as a way to improve cooperation between northern and southern Atlantic countries on key issues and come to agreement on a set of principles for the Atlantic region. CNN —The French ambassador to Niger and other French diplomats are “literally being held hostage at the French embassy,” according to French president Emmanuel Macron. Speaking to journalists during a visit to the Côte D’Or region in France on Friday, Macron said that “food was prevented from being delivered” to the embassy in Niamey, and that the ambassador was “eating military rations.”The ambassador, Sylvain Itte, “cannot go out, he is persona non grata and he is being refused food,” Macron also said. After seizing control of the West African country in July, the military junta ordered Itte to leave the country. But the diplomat remained in place, according to the French presidency, with French authorities reiterating that they do not recognize the authority of the junta. Asked if he would work on bringing the ambassador back home, Macron emphasized the authority of ousted Niger president Mohamed Bazoum: “I will do whatever we agree on with President Bazoum because he is the legitimate authority and I speak with him every day.”

India, which is scrambling to rein-in inflation ahead of state elections later this year, on Friday expanded curbs on rice exports with a 20% duty on parboiled rice that would be effective until Oct. 15. Shipments of around 500,000 tons have been put on hold, said B.V. Krishna Rao, president of the Rice Exporters Association (REA). India exported a record 22.2 million tons of rice in 2022, including 7.4 million tons of parboiled rice. Lower-income consumers in Asia and Africa previously preferred 100% broken rice, exporters said, which was available at $325 per ton, but India banned exports of broken rice last year. India, which accounts for 40% of world rice exports, in July ordered a halt to its largest rice export category, non-basmati white rice, which fuelled a rally in global rice prices.

The appearance by the conductor John Eliot Gardiner leading the Monteverdi Choir and the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique in southeastern France this week was supposed to be a celebration: the start of a tour across Europe by one of classical music’s most revered maestros and his esteemed ensembles. Instead, Gardiner, 80, provoked an outcry when, on Tuesday evening, he was accused of hitting a singer in the face backstage after a concert performance of the first two acts of Berlioz’s opera “Les Troyens” at the Festival Berlioz in La Côte-Saint-André. Gardiner struck the singer, William Thomas, a bass, because he had headed the wrong way off the podium at the concert, according to a person who was granted anonymity to describe the incident because the person was not authorized to discuss it publicly. Thomas, a rising bass from England who was performing the role of Priam, did not appear to be seriously injured and was set to perform again on Wednesday evening. His representatives did not respond to requests for comment.
