Rite Aid, one of the largest U.S. pharmacy retailers, stumbled under its high debt, revenue declines, increased competition, and opioid litigation, according to its court filings. Founded in 1962, Rite Aid employs 45,000 people at more than 2,000 retail stores in 17 states, and will remain open for business during the bankruptcy. Rite Aid, which has denied wrongdoing, said it hopes to reach an "equitable" settlement of opioid litigation in bankruptcy. Landing a new job this year may take a while, a study from two HR firms suggests. It takes companies an average of 44 days to hire for an open role after posting the job. It takes companies an average of 44 days to fill an open position, a day longer than last year's hiring cycle, the report says. For their part, job candidates have started to express frustration over how long the recruitment process is taking. The company did not get back to her for over four weeks, and she later learned she didn't get the job.

Dr. Mandy Cohen: Biden chooses the next CDC director

And as Cohen takes on what’s become an increasingly politicized role at the CDC, Biden heralded her capacity to work across the aisle. I look forward to working with Dr. Cohen as she leads our nation’s finest scientists and public health experts with integrity and transparency,” the president said. Cohen will hit the ground running as leader of the world’s finest public health organization saving lives every day. Walensky announced her departure from her government role last month in the days before the Covid-19 public health emergency lifted. As she prepares to step into the role, Cohen inherits an agency wracked with challenges and low morale.

The barranca on the L.A. Country Club’s North Course comes into play repeatedly during the 18 holes, especially as protection in and around the greens. Errant golf balls that land inside the barranca may be unplayable and result in a one-stroke penalty. In other instances, expect to see competitors descending into the barranca with hopes of rescuing their golf balls. The L.A. Country Club barranca, however, is far from a random curio of the course layout. It serves an important, effective drainage role during rainy seasons and adds a natural, craggy aesthetic to the course design, which originated in the 1920s.

Donald Trump’s criminal cases, explained

Trump was indicted back in March by the Manhattan district attorney on state charges related to hush-money payments to a former adult-film star in 2016. Smith is also overseeing other investigations related to Trump, including those regarding the January 6, 2021, insurrection and the 2020 election. That federal law deals with the illegal retention of “national defense information,” a broad term that encompasses classified documents and other sensitive government materials. Federal charges related to classified documents likely do not either. But people do routinely serve prison time for retention of classified documents, conspiracy and obstruction.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced a bill that would ban Congress members from trading individual stocks. Nancy Pelosi's husband Paul Pelosi has long been scrutinized for his extensive history of trading stocks. The Bipartisan Restoring Faith in Government Act would prohibit Congress members and their spouses and any dependents from trading individual stocks. The bill would prevent Congressional lawmakers and their spouses and dependents from trading individual stocks. Instead of owning individual stocks, Congress members would be allowed to buy and sell baskets of stocks via mutual funds or ETFs, as well as Treasury securities.
A waxwing slain beneath a living-room window, its biannual journey stopped dead by the sky in a pane of glass. After 40 mostly satisfying years as a film critic, I began to feel all those imagined visions closing around my head. I yearned to shake them off, to return to reality; birding has come to seem one of the more graceful ways to do that. To me, the nightly BirdCast map is a corrective to our human-centric view of the planet. In April and May, the map’s a rainbow of arrival, a feathery procession as brilliant as a pride parade.

Jan 31 (Reuters) - Intel Corp (INTC.O) said on Tuesday that it had made broad cuts to employee and executive pay, a week after the company issued a lower-than-expected sales forecast driven by a loss of market share to rivals and a PC market downturn. Intel last week said its profit margins were plunging as the PC market cools after several years of growth during the pandemic. The company has also lowered its 401(k) matching program from 5% to 2.5% and suspended merit raises and quarterly performance bonuses, the person said. Annual performance bonuses based Intel's overall financial performance will remain but those bonuses have been smaller in recent years as the company has lost ground to rivals, the person added. Rite Aid CEO Heyward Donigan Leaves Drugstore Chain
  + stars: | 2023-01-09 | by ( Dean Seal | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Rite Aid Corp. on Monday said that President and Chief Executive Heyward Donigan has left the drugstore chain, whose shares have been hovering near all-time lows as losses mount. The company tapped board member Elizabeth Burr as an interim CEO as it conducts a search for a new leader. Ms. Burr is a health industry veteran, having previously served as chief innovation officer at the health insurance giant Humana Inc.
Senator Richard Burr said on Friday that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission informed him this week it has concluded investigation concerning him with no action. U.S. authorities investigated Burr, a North Carolina lawmaker who did not seek reelection last year, for his stock trades before the downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Burr denied any wrongdoing and said he relied solely on news reports to make decisions on his stock transactions. He said in January 2021 the Justice Department had closed a related probe. Burr and Fauth had a very short phone call on the same day as the stock sales, the SEC has said in court filings. The Department of Justice earlier had closed a criminal investigation of Burr and Fauth without taking action against either man. The SEC in court filings has said that on Feb. 13, 2020, Burr called his stockbroker and directed him to sell more than $1.65 million worth of stock. Almost three hours later, Burr called Fauth's cellphone for a call that lasted 50 seconds, the SEC has said. A minute or less after that, Fauth called his primary stockbroker, who did not answer, the SEC has said in filings.
The House unanimously passed a bill Wednesday to posthumously award the Congressional Gold Medal to Emmett Till, the Chicago teenager murdered by white supremacists in the 1950s, and his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley. The bill, which passed the Senate in January, is meant to honor Till and his mother — who had insisted on an open casket funeral to demonstrate the brutality of his killing — with the highest civilian honor that Congress awards. The medal will be given to the National Museum of African American History where it will be displayed near the casket Till was buried in. The killing galvanized the civil rights movement after Till’s mother insisted on an open casket and Jet magazine published photos of his brutalized body. The designation comes months after President Joe Biden signed the first anti-lynching legislation, named after Till, into law.
The couple have been ordered to report to two different federal prisons on January 17, according to the documents. Todd and Julie Chrisley, best known for their reality series “Chrisley Knows Best,” were found guilty in June of conspiracy to defraud banks out of more than $30 million in fraudulent loans. Todd Chrisley, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison with three years of supervised release, has been assigned to serve time at FPC Pensacola, a minimum-security facility in Pensacola, Florida. His wife Julie Chrisley was sentenced to seven years in prison and three years of supervised release. But Todd and Julie are people of faith, and that faith gives them strength as they appeal their convictions.”
