AI is making managers nervous
  + stars: | 2024-04-28 | by ( Aaron Mok | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +3 min
Read previewManagers are worried that using powerful generative AI tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT in the workplace might cut their salaries. Of those surveyed, 48% of managers reported that AI tools are a "threat to their pay" and will "fuel wage declines" across the country in 2024. In early March, Cognition unveiled Devin, the 'first AI software engineer' the startup claims could fix bugs and train AI models. Sixty-two percent of managers surveyed, according to Beautiful.ai, said their employees feel like AI could eventually put them out of their jobs. "There's no doubt that the implementation of AI tools has employees questioning their value to a company," according to the survey.

AdvertisementBusiness Insider spoke with seven Fisker Ocean owners who shared their anxieties about what will happen to their cars if Fisker is no more. AdvertisementSome Fisker owners said they are already struggling to get service and parts. Three Fisker ocean owners described instances where the vehicle was bricked for days after their 12-volt battery died. What Fisker's failure would mean for its competitorsIf Fisker files for bankruptcy, there are likely to be ripple effects for other EV startups, Fiorani said. "If Fiskers start falling off the side of the road in the next few months because there's no one to update them, that's going to put fear into a lot of electric vehicle owners — not just Fisker owners," Fiorani said.

The insects will infiltrate a much bigger geographical area than similar occurrences in most years because they’re part of the dual emergence of two particular periodical cicada broods. Although the full-scale emergence isn’t underway yet, experts have some guidance on how to prepare for cicada season. Strange fungus turns cicadas into zombies

But some of these insects won’t succeed in their goal of procreating — instead, they’ll be controlled like zombies into spreading a strange fungus that hijacks cicadas’ bodies and behavior. At some point, the insects are exposed to spores of the fungus Massospora cicadina. Courtesy Angie Macias/WVUDespite having a chalky gumdrop of spores instead of genitals, the infected cicadas still attempt to mate, with gusto. Both male and female cicadas infected with Massospora flick their wings to draw in amorous, soon-to-be-infected males. But attempting to mate is just one part of how infected cicadas spread the fungus.

Raul Rubiera | Miami Herald | Getty ImagesWhen Carolyn Lamb saw news of Cuban spy Victor Manuel Rocha's arrest on the news last December, she recognized him immediately. The lower the value of the claims, the less the Cuban government would have to pay in any future negotiated settlement. Ashby assumed Rocha's paranoia about eavesdropping was in response to the George W. Bush administration's opposition to the Cuba claims buying business. But according to the Justice Department, by that point Rocha was already in his third decade as a Cuban agent. The 13-year group, known as Brood XIX, or the Great Southern Brood, is the largest periodical cicada brood, stretching across the southeastern United States. The Northern Illinois Brood, or Brood XIII, emerges every 17 years. Periodical cicadas are smaller and mostly black, with bright red eyes and orange-tinged wings and legs. Billions of cicadas are expected this spring as two different broods — Broods XIX and XIII — emerge simultaneously. However, predictions of a cicadapocalypse — in which Brood XIII and Brood XIX show up at the same place at the same time — are probably an exaggeration.

Did One Guy Just Stop a Huge Cyberattack?
  + stars: | 2024-04-03 | by ( Kevin Roose | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The internet, as anyone who works deep in its trenches will tell you, is not a smooth, well-oiled machine. It’s a messy patchwork that has been assembled over decades, and is held together with the digital equivalent of Scotch tape and bubble gum. Last week, one of those programmers may have saved the internet from huge trouble. Recently, while doing some routine maintenance, Mr. Freund inadvertently found a backdoor hidden in a piece of software that is part of the Linux operating system. The backdoor was a possible prelude to a major cyberattack that experts say could have caused enormous damage, if it had succeeded.

A group of roughly 600 software testers at Activision on Friday formed the U.S. video game industry's largest union so far. The union is the first to organize under a new labor agreement negotiated as part of Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of Activision in October, the company's largest takeover yet. Activision Quality Assurance United-CWA, the name of the union, is seeking higher wages and more career opportunities, QA tester Kara Fannon said in a statement. Before the Microsoft-Activision deal closed, QA workers at the video game-maker's Albany branch had also formed a union.
